Installation Instructions:
==========================

1. Connect the USBXchange adapter to your SCSI device(s).
    Please refer to the User's Guide for more information regarding this step.

2. Power on the SCSI device(s).

3. If Windows 98/98SE/Me/2000/XP is not running, start it now.

4. If the USBXchange adapter is not inserted in
    the USB port, insert it now.

5. When a "New Hardware Found" dialog box appears, insert the
    USBXchange setup diskette in the floppy drive and click "OK"
    to install the driver.

6. Continue by following the instructions on the screen.

Once your Windows 98/98SE/Me/2000/XP drivers have been installed
and the USBXchange adapter is connected to your computer,
the LED display located on top of the USBXchange adapter
will glow with a steady light.

Uninstallation Instructions:
============================

1. Remove the USBXchange adapter from the USB port of your
    system before running the device driver Uninstallation
    program.

2. Insert the USBXchange setup diskette into the CD-ROM drive.

3. In My Computer double click on your floppy drive
    icon.

4. Double click on the "Adpusbui.exe" file.

5. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the
    device driver uninstallation.

Trouble shooting tips:
======================

If you have problems with the USBXchange adapter resulting
from errors in preparing and connecting the SCSI devices
to it, please refer to the User's Guide for more details.

Adaptec strongly recommends that you plug the USBXchange
directly into a USB port on your system. If you must connect
through a USB hub, use only a self-powered USB hub (A/C powered hubs).

Product Limitations and Known Issues:
=====================================

A. General
==========
1. When connected to bus power USB hub and attached SCSI
    devices do not supply termination power, the USBXchange
    adapter is required to connect an external DC power
    adapter for proper operation.

2. When the USBXchange adapter is connected to SIIG USB Hub
    7000 (with external power supply connected), the system
    fails to detect the insertion of the USBXchange adapter
    and the SCSI device(s) connected. This is because the hub
    only supplies 3.5v instead of 4.4v as per USB
    specification.

3. Due to the limitation of USB, the USBXchange adapter only
    supports CD-Recording at 2X and below.

B. Windows 98/98SE/Me
=====================
1. When the USBXchange is connected to DVD-RAM drive in
    Windows 98/98SE/Me environment, hot removing the USBXchange
    adapter may cause blue screen (When CD-ROM or PD media is
    present in the DVD-RAM Drive). This is because the VXD
    driver that comes with DVD-RAM drive still tries to
    access the drive even after the USBXchange adapter is
    removed already.

2. In Windows 98/98SE/Me environment, booting up system with two
    USBXchange adapters inserted will cause blue screen to
    appear (system will stall).

3. On ACPI systems, initiating system suspend request
    manually while there is data transfer activities may cause
    your system to become unstable.

4. Inserting a second unit of USBXchange adapter into the system
    takes a longer time to initialize.

5. Hot removing DVD-RAM drive containing CD-ROM or PD disc
    will cause blue screen.

6. Name(s) of SCSI device(s) will disappear from Device Manager
    after user initiates a suspend/stand-by during data transfer.
    But all SCSI devices should still function properly.

C. Windows 2000
===============
1. Currently, the device driver for Windows 2000 can only support
    connection of four SCSI device/LUN to your desktop.

2. When using Easy CD Creator (version 4.02) to copy data from
    CD-ROM to CD-R media, performing "Test" immediately after
    "Copy" will fail. "Buffer under run" failure will be
    encountered. If need to use "Test" after "Copy", please
    close the Easy CD Creator application first before running
    "Test" again.
    This issue has be corrected in the upate of Easy CD
    Creator (4.02E).

3. When another unit of USBXchange is inserted into the system,
    the system may prompt for USBXchange driver again.

4. During installation of device driver for the USBXchange
    adapter, the system may prompt for re-boot.

5. With removable media drive, only the first partition of a
    multi-partitioned media can be recognized.

6. With Win2k Disk Management tool (Control Panel/Administrative
    Tools/Computer Management), a partition-format request on
    hard-disk failed on format with message "Volume is open or
    in use" sometimes. But you can format the hard disk
    subsequently.

7. To enable system to detect a Western Digital Exterprise 4360
    or 9100 Ultra Fast SCSI HDD. A jumper has to be inserted at pin
    21 and pin 22 TRGT INIT (Disable Target Initiated Synchronous
    /Wide Negotiation)on the HDD.

8. Tape backup is not supported by USBXchange in Windows 2000.

D. Windows XP
=============
1. When resuming from suspend (S3 mode) the USBXchange & SCSI device
     will not be available. A workaround is to hot-remove & hot-insert
     the USBXchange.

2. With a SCSI CD-RW drive connected to USBXchange, the built-in
     Microsoft CD-RW application will not allow the burn/erase
     of media (via the right mouse button). A workaround is to install
     a third party CD-RW application to perform the burning and
     erasing.

3. Tape back up is not supported by USBXchange in Windows XP.

External Power Supply
=====================

The USBXchange receives its electrical power from either an attached
SCSI device or, if not available, the adapter switches automatically
to receive power from the USB bus.
In some rare cases, you may need to use an optional DC power supply.
The USBXchange can use a DC power jack with 4.5V-9V output voltage
and minimum 500 mA output current.

SCSI Rules
==========

Here are some basic rules of SCSI:

- Any SCSI device, including scanners, connected to any computer must
be powered on the entire time the computer is on. When you
connect/disconnect devices, you must remove the Adaptec USBXchange
and then power off all SCSI devices.

- Every SCSI device must have a unique ID number on the same bus. ID
numbers must be in the range 0 through 7 (the Adaptec USBXchange is
7, so any devices attached to the USBXchange must have ID numbers
between 0-6). You can have the same ID on different SCSI buses (e.g.
you can use ID 0 on your adapter even if another SCSI bus has a
device at that ID). This is like having two houses on different
streets with the same house number. Number 1 Oak Street and Number 1
Elm Street. The system will see each SCSI BUS as a new street, and so
not confuse the houses (or in this case SCSI devices).

- Termination must be correctly set. The beginning and end of the
SCSI chain must be terminated.
The Adaptec USBXchange is always terminated, but if you add a device,
you must terminate the device at the end of the cable. Active
termination is better in general, than using passive termination.
Consult you DEVICE DOCUMENATATION with regards to termination issues.

- It is important to use good quality cabling and to not exceed cable
length limits. For each cabinet, you can estimate 20-30 cm (9"-12")
of cabling for single device cabinets, more for multi-device
cabinets. For each cabinet, add another 20-30 cm for the impedance
change.

- Hard drives and similar storage devices have a "driver" which was
installed when the drive was formatted. That driver is used by the
computer to access that device. Other storage devices such as CD-ROM
drives will have an extension or control panel to act as the driver
for that device. It is important that the driver be compatible with
the computer and the version of OS you have. The company that
distributes the software can provide compatibility information.
