                    Adaptec USB2Xchange
      Supporting Windows 98SE, Windows Me, Windows 2000,
                      and Windows XP
      ==================================================

Thank you for purchasing the Adaptec USB2Xchange. The USB2Xchange
allows SCSI devices to plug into the USB (Universal Serial Bus)
2.0 port of your PC compatible computer.

Key Product Features:
=====================
- Compliant with Universal Serial Bus Specification Revision 1.1
  and 2.0 (EHCI v0.95).
- High and Full speed support; self-powered with termination power
  supplied by the SCSI device.
- Narrow (8 bit) SCSI bus, synchronous and asynchronous transfer
  modes, disconnect disabled.
- Plug and Play.
- Connect up to four SCSI devices (multiple LUNs supported) to the
  USB2Xchange under Windows 2000 and Windows XP.
- Connect up to seven SCSI devices (multiple LUNs supported) to
  the USB2Xchange under Windows 98SE and Windows Me.
- SCSI devices supported include Removable drives, Hard disk
  drives, Magneto-optical (MO) drives, CD-ROM drives, CD-R/RW
  drives, DVD-RAM drives, tape drives and Scanners.
- The USB2Xchange adapter receives its electrical power from the
  termination power of the attached SCSI devices. If this power is
  not available, the adapter automatically switches to receive
  power from the USB bus.
- The USB2Xchange can use a DC power jack with 4.5V-7.5V output
  voltage and minimum 500 mA output current.

Documentation:
==============
Much of our documentation is released in PDF format. To view these
documents you must have Acrobat Reader version 4 or later
installed on your system. You can find a copy of this software on
the CD shipped with your product or you can download the latest
version from <http://www.adobe.com>.

Installation and Uninstall Instructions:
========================================
Please refer to the User's Guide for Installation and uninstall
instructions.

Troubleshooting tips:
===============
- If you have problems connecting SCSI devices to your
  USB2Xchange, check the USB2Xchange User's Guide on the CD and
  the Adaptec Support Knowledgebase (ASK) at
  <http://ask.adaptec.com/> for more information on proper device
  connection.

- Adaptec strongly recommends that you plug the USB2Xchange
  directly into a USB port on your system and not through a USB
  Hub. If you must connect through a USB hub, use only a
  self-powered USB hub (A/C powered hub).

- If you are unable to detect a Western Digital Enterprise 4360
  or 9100 Ultra Fast SCSI hard disk drive, check to see if the
  jumper on the drive has been inserted at pin 21 and pin 22 TRGT
  INIT (Disable Target Initiated Synchronous/Wide Negotiation) on
  the hard disk drive.

Product Limitations and Known Issues:
=====================================

A. General
==========
- There are cases when the USB bus cannot supply the necessary
  power for the USB2Xchange to operate -- if, for example, you're
  using an unpowered USB hub and the attached SCSI devices don't
  supply termination power. In these cases, you need to use an
  optional DC power supply. Refer to the User's Guide for more
  information.

- When connected to a USB 1.1 port, the USB2Xchange adapter only
  supports CD-recording at speeds of 2X and below.

- Select the "Removable" option in the SCSI device settings in
  Device Manager before attempting to perform a hot-removal of
  the SCSI device.

B. Windows 98SE and Windows Me
==============================
- When the USB2Xchange is connected to a DVD-RAM drive in Windows
  98SE or Windows Me environments, hot-removing the USB2Xchange
  adapter may cause a blue screen (that is, may stall your system)
  when CD-ROM or PD media are present in the DVD-RAM Drive. This
  is because the VXD driver that comes with DVD-RAM drive still
  tries to access the drive even after the USB2Xchange adapter is
  removed already. Ensure that the LED on the USB2Xchange has
  stopped flashing before hot-removing the device.

- In Windows 98SE and Windows Me environments, booting up your
  system with two USB2Xchange adapters installed will cause a blue
  screen to appear (that is, the system will stall). To work
  around this issue, boot the system with no adapter or only one
  adapter connected, then connect the remaining devices after the
  OS has loaded.

- On ACPI systems, initiating a system suspend request manually
  while there is data transfer activity may cause your system to
  become unstable.

- Connecting a second USB2Xchange adapter to the system will slow
  initialization.

- The name(s) of SCSI device(s) will disappear from the Device
  Manager after you initiate a suspend/stand-by during data
  transfer, but all SCSI devices should still function properly.

- Transferring large files in Windows 98SE may take a long time.
  This is due to the CD-ROM Class Driver.

- If you are getting a duplicate USB2Xchange icon in the system
  tray, hot-plug the device.

C. Windows 2000
===============
- Currently, the device driver for Windows 2000 can only support
  up to four SCSI devices to the USB2Xchange Adapter.

- When using Easy CD Creator (version 4.02) to copy data from
  CD-ROM to CD-R media, performing "Test" immediately after "Copy"
  will fail. "Buffer under run" failure will be encountered. If
  you need to use "Test" after "Copy", close the Easy CD Creator
  application first before running "Test" again. This issue has
  been corrected in the update of Easy CD Creator (4.02E).

- When a second USB2Xchange is connected to the system, the system
  may prompt you to install the USB2Xchange driver again.

- After you install the driver for the USB2Xchange adapter, the
  system may prompt for re-boot.

- With removable media drives, only the first partition of a
  multi-partitioned media can be recognized.
