4.GENERAL TROUBLESHOOTING SOLUTIONS
If you experience problems, check the following troubleshooting tips
to find a solution.
NOTE:
You can use just one solution even if two or more solutions are
available.
a. When an anti-virus program is running, ESM2 cannot be installed.
SOLUTION:
Turn off the anti-virus program before installing ESM2.
b. Even after you change the target printer for "Print to (P)" in
the "Details" tab of the printer's Properties, ESM2 continues to
monitor the printer that has been set before you change it.
SOLUTION #1:
Reopen the main window and restart Background Monitoring for ESM2,
as follows:
1. Close and reopen the main window.
2. Select "Background Monitoring" from the "Setting (S)" menu.
After you select "stop monitoring now", the Background Monitoring
icon disappears.
3. Select "Background Monitoring" again and then select "monitor
now".
ESM2 can now monitor the new printer.
SOLUTION #2:
Reboot the computer.
c. (Windows 95 only) You cannot uninstall "EBPrinter" by using
"EPSON Printer Utility Uninstall".
SOLUTION:
Clear the "EBPrinter" check box on the "Utility" tab for
"EPSON Printer Utility Uninstall".
d. When monitoring many printers in the main window, you may get a
memory caution (lack of memory) message.
SOLUTION #1:
Increase the disk space for use as virtual memory.
SOLUTION #2:
Close the main window when you do not need to use it to monitor
printers.
e. (Windows 95/98/ME problem)When ESM2 is running on these OSs,
SCANDISK does not work properly.
SOLUTION:
Before running SCANDISK, you must stop all ESM2 events
including background monitoring.
f. (Windows 95/98/ME problem) When you are monitoring a local printer,
an LPT1:Conflicting message may appear if printing is performed
from the MS-DOS prompt.
SOLUTION:
From "Port Settings" on the Properties page of the driver, select
"Print spool job of MS-DOS".
g. (Windows 95 problem) If ESM2 is installed on Windows 95
that uses Microsoft Internet Explorer version 4.01 SP1 or earlier,
the following warning message may appear.
"IDRIVER: Since this program performed unjust processing, it is
forced to terminate. When you cannot terminate, contact the program
vendor."
SOLUTION:
Upgrade Microsoft Internet Explorer to a version higher than 4.01
SP1.
h. (Windows NT 4.0 problem) When you double-click SETUP.EXE to install
ESM2, the following warning message appears and installation may
be interrupted.
"An application error occurred. An application error log is
created. IDRIVER.exe".
SOLUTION:

the printers but display the message "Unable to find printer" or
"Searching..."
SOLUTION:
Reinstall ESM2 on your PC, starting from the very beginning.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
5. SOLUTIONS FOR INDIVIDUAL PRINTERS
a. (DFX-8500 problem)Displaying the consumable information on the Status
Window is slow.
Solution:
ESM2 gets paper information from the printer and this data
is large. Therefore it is slower than other printers.
The communication time depends on the performance of the PC too.
b. (DFX-8500 problem)If the PC connected to the DFX-8500 keeps on
displaying the ESM2 consumable information, another PC on the network
cannot monitor this printer.
SOLUTION:
Make sure that the local user is trained not to keep on displaying
the consumable information for the printer.
c. (DFX-8500 problem)When you display the consumable information,
printing slows down.
SOLUTION:
ESM2 is getting a large amount of data from the printer, which
slows down printing. To speed up printing, close the
consumable information window.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
6. SOLUTIONS FOR THE LOCAL PRINTER
NOTE:
You can use just one solution even if two or more solutions are
available.
a. "Searching..." or "Unable to find printer" appears on the ESM2
main window.
SOLUTION:
Try to turn on the printer before turning on the computer.
!!! CAUTION !!!
While printing, do not use the "Refresh" command; this can slow
down printing.
b. Printing speed is becoming slower.
SOLUTION:
Do not start ESM2 while you are printing. This may slow down
printing.
However you do not need to stop ESM2 if it is already running.
c. You get a communication error.
SOLUTION #1:
Select "Enable bi-directional support for this printer" under
"Spool Settings" on the Details tab of the printer's Properties.
NOTE: This setting is sometimes changed by the operating system.
Therefore, you need to check this setting again.
SOLUTION #2:
Make sure the printer is turned on and all the cables are properly
connected. If you still have a communication error, try using
the "Refresh" command.
!!! CAUTION !!!
While printing, do not use the "Refresh" command; this can slow
down printing.
d. The printer's status does not change.
SOLUTION:
Make sure the printer is turned on and all the cables are properly
connected. If you still have a communication error, try using
the "Refresh" command.
!!! CAUTION !!!
While printing, do not use the "Refresh" command; this can slow
down printing.
e. On Windows 95/98/Me, sometimes a communication error occurs when
the ECP printer port is selected.
SOLUTION:
Change the printer port setting as well as the setting in
the PC's BIOS. Boot the computer and go into Setup. From the CMOS
BIOS screen, change the LPT port mode accordingly.
f. On Windows 2000, the printer status may not appear correctly
after Windows restarts.
SOLUTION:
Reinstall ESM2 on your PC.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
7. SOLUTIONS FOR THE NETWORK PRINTER (FOR ADMINISTRATORS)
a. An incorrect status message is caused by the number of PCs connected
and the monitoring intervals.
SOLUTION:
The network printer communicates directly with ESM2 on each PC,
thus causing network traffic. If there is too much network traffic,
a communication error occurs and sometimes the status is reported
incorrectly. In this case, stop monitoring the printer from one or
more PCs or increase the monitoring interval through ESM2.
b. When ESM2 is used, the EPSON Net! software (an accessory for the
C82357*) does not work.
SOLUTION:
EPSON Net! and EPSON Status Monitor 2 do not work at the same time.
Therefore, first stop ESM2, and then run EPSON Net!.
c. ESM2 may be very slow when looking up the status of the printer
connected via EpsonNet Direct Print.
SOLUTION:
This problem occurs if ESM2 has registered both printers connected
via EpsonNet Direct Print and NetWare Shared or NDS.
Remove the NetWare printers from the monitoring objects.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
7. RESTRICTIONS ON NETWARE SHARED PRINTERS AND NDS PRINTERS
NOTE:
You can use just one solution even if two or more solutions are available.
a. You cannot monitor a NetWare queue printer beyond the IPX router.
SOLUTION #1:
You cannot monitor the printer because the default setting for
IPX hops is 0. Change the number of hops in SETUP.EXE. (The
default location is \InstallDir\setup.exe.) If you set hops to
more than 0, network traffic will increase. Also, in a WAN
environment, you may be charged for the cause of automatic
dial-up.
SOLUTION #2:
If all NetWare shared printers cannot be monitored through the
ESM2 main window, use the "Refresh" command. If Background
Monitoring causes a communication error, restart
"Background Monitoring".
b. Restrictions on the number of connections to the NetWare queue.
SOLUTION:
Connect only one print server to each queue. Refer to the User's
Guide for details.
c. (NetWare shared printer problem) When you open the Printer Status
window from the Properties page of a printer driver,
a communication error may occur.
SOLUTION:
Start "Background Monitoring" first.
d. When the EPSON Net! software (an accessory for the
C82357*) is used, a NetWare shared printer cannot be monitored.
SOLUTION:
EPSON Net! and ESM2 do not work at the same time. Therefore,
first stop "EPSON Net!", and then run ESM2.
e. You cannot monitor a printer connected to an NDS queue on NetWare
4.x or later.
SOLUTION:
The C82357* does not support NDS queue on NetWare 4.x or later.
Set up a bindery emulation on the server, and then connect to the
bindery queue.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
9. SOLUTIONS FOR WINDOWS SHARED PRINTERS
NOTE:
You can use just one solution even if two or more solutions are
available.
a. Windows shared printers cannot be monitored.
SOLUTION:
Check that the following settings are correct.
1. Open the network computer properties of the computer
supplying the Windows shared printer. Make sure that the
Microsoft network shared service is set up correctly in the
network settings.
2. Make sure ESM2 in installed on the computer supplying
the Windows shared printer, and that the Windows shared printer item
is set to "monitor".
3. Make sure that the shared printer is set to be monitored in
the ESM2 settings on the computer that uses the Windows shared
printer.
4. In the network settings of the control panel, make sure NetWare
Client or TCP/IP is set as the current network settings.
b. On Windows NT 4.0, if the Windows shared printer is set to
"monitor", when ESM2 starts, the application error window appears
and the NetWare shared printer cannot be monitored.
SOLUTION:
When monitoring a Windows NT 4.0 shared printer, be sure
to use Service Pack 6 or higher.
c. (DFX-8500 problem)When Paper Memory Utility is used, Windows
shared printers do not appear on the printer list.
SOLUTION:
ESM2 is not available for Paper Memory Utility on the
Windows shared printer.
Use Paper Memory Utility in local connection, NetWare
shared printer, or LPR printer.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
10. SOLUTIONS FOR PAPER MEMORY UTILITY (DFX-8500)
a. The Utility window takes more than one minute to open.
SOLUTION:
Remove any unnecessary printer drivers to shorten the time.
b. A banner sheet is printed when you save paper memory information
to a NetWare shared printer.
SOLUTION:
Edit the capture portion of the NetWare login script to disable
banner printing. Refer to your operating systemfs reference
manual for other ways to turn off banner printing.
c. On Windows NT 4.0 or Windows 2000, an error message appears
when the settings are saved from the Paper Memory Utility.
