Installing the Adapter Software on a Windows 95 System
======================================================

For systems running Windows 95, the adapter software includes the Intel(R) 
WLAN Utilities and Site Survey. To install this software,navigate to the 
location of the downloaded software package or the Intel CD and run the 
setup.exe program. On the Intel CD, the program is in the 
\wireless\apps\win95\setup directory.


Installing Drivers
==================

To install drivers, use the hardware wizard that starts automatically when
you install the adapter. You cannot install drivers from the Intel PRO 
Network Connections window.


Updating Drivers
================

To take advantage of the features in the Intel(R) PRO/Wireless LAN Software, 
update your driver. Drivers are available at the Intel support web site at 
http://support.intel.com.  For information about updating drivers, see the 
Intel Pro/Wireless 2011B LAN Adapter User's Guide. You can find this guide 
is either on the Intel CD or on the Intel support website. If you downloaded 
the software from the website, the guide is included in the files you downloaded.


Using Profiles
==============

When you activate a profile and use it, the wireless settings in the profile 
override settings displayed in the Network Control Panel Applet (NCPA).



Creating a Driver Disk
======================

To install the drivers, the computer must have a floppy drive or a CDROM.
The drivers are shipped on the installation CD. If the computer does not 
have a CD-ROM, you must create a driver disk on another computer that has
both a CD-ROM drive and floppy disk drive. The computer you are installing 
the drivers on is called the “target” computer. To create a driver disk, do 
one of the following on the computer with both a floppy drive and a CD-ROM:

- Insert the CD in the CD-ROM. The Intel(R) PRO Network Connections window 
is displayed. Click the Create Install Disk button and follow the 
instructions on the screen.

- Use the DOS command line. Follow the instructions below:

1. Find a computer. It must have a floppy drive and a CD-ROM.
2. Insert the installation CD in the CD-ROM. Navigate to the 
\wireless\makedisk directory on the CD. If you downloaded the software
package from the Intel support website, navigate to the appropriate 
directory on your computer.
3. Insert a formatted diskette into the "A" drive.
4. Type the appropriate command for the target system. 
   - Windows XP: winxp.bat
   - Windows 2000: win2k.bat
   - Windows Me: winme.bat
   - Windows 98: win98.bat
   - Windows 95: win95.bat
   - Windows NT: winnt.bat



Known Limitations and Compatibility Notes
=========================================


Entering a passphrase instead of hexadecimal for encryption
-----------------------------------------------------------

When you are setting up Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) encryption using
hexadecimal digits, toggling from Hex to Text displays corrupt text in the
WEP key field.


Installing the AP Administration Tools
--------------------------------------

If only the AP Administration Tools are installed and you install them 
again, the program maintenance screen displays. It allows you to modify,
repair, or remove the software. Do not select the Repair option. If you want
to install the AP Administration Tools again, select Modify.


Changing profiles may take up to two minutes
--------------------------------------------

When you move from one profile to another, it may take up to two minutes 
for the adapter to connect to the network.


Adapter Switching feature limitations
--------------------------------------

The Adapter Switching feature in Intel PROSet II

- requires DHCP.
- only supports Intel wired and wireless adapters.
- does not support VPN.
- is primarily designed to maintain a connection to the network. It is not
  intended to handle an active data stream. It is recommended that you 
  avoid switching adapters when an active data transfer is in progress.


Help not available for Enable Profile checkbox in Intel PROSet II
-----------------------------------------------------------------

In My WLAN Places, the Enable Profile setting in the Settings group does
not have any help text. The text below explains how this feature works.

If this checkbox is checked, the driver scans the network for wireless
connections. The driver stops scanning the network when it finds an enabled
profile.


Moving the adapter from one PCMCIA slot to another
--------------------------------------------------

When installing an adapter on a computer running Windows 98 SE, note the 
PC (PCMCIA) slot where you installed the adapter. When you insert the 
adapter in a PC slot in the future, use the same slot.

Changing adapter settings if running Windows 95C
-------------------------------------------------

If you are running Windows 95C, you must use the Network Control Panel
Applet (NCPA) to change the adapter settings.


Resetting the adapter
---------------------

If you reset the adapter using Intel PROSet II, you must reboot the 
computer to restore the adapter's connection to the network.


Reinstalling the adapter may require a reboot 
---------------------------------------------

If you uninstall the driver and remove the adapter, and then install the 
driver and adapter at a later time, you must reboot the computer. 
Rebooting the computer allows Intel PROSet II to manage the adapter again.


Using a Windows CE device in a network without a WINS server
------------------------------------------------------------

After installing the Intel PRO/Wireless 2011B LAN Adapter, you must 
configure the device for a WINS IP Address. After you configure the device,
it can be synchronized with a desktop or laptop through the wireless 
connection. 

To configure the device for a WINS IP Address, do the following:
Tap Start, Settings, then the Connections tab.

1. Tap Network and then tap the Intel adapter.
2. Tap Name Servers.
3. In the WINS field, enter the IP address of the laptop or desktop you are
   connecting to.
4. Click OK.


Upgrading from software version 2.x to version 3.0 on Windows CE devices
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Before installing version 3.0 of this release, you must uninstall the 
version 2.2 software. Otherwise, the adapter and software cannot function 
correctly.


Using the default directory during the installation on Windows CE devices
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

The software for the Pocket PC and Handheld devices is not installed into 
non-default directories. Some devices may appear to create and accept the 
non-default path. Attempting to install the software into a non-default 
directory always results in the files being placed into the default 
Windows directory.


Inserting the adapter repeatedly over a short period of time on 
Windows CE Devices
----------------------------------------------------------------

If you insert and remove the adapter repeatedly over a short period of 
time, the ESSID, also called SSID, may change. If this situation occurs, 
perform a soft reset on your Windows CE device, and then correct the ESSID.


Using an Intel Compact Flash adapter in peer-to-peer (Ad Hoc) mode
------------------------------------------------------------------

Compact Flash adapters do not function in peer-to-peer (Ad Hoc) mode.


Intel PROSet II does not recognize Intel adapters with Compact Flash
--------------------------------------------------------------------

Intel PROSet II does not recognize Intel adapters with Compact Flash. The
adapter is functional and is recognized by the operating system.


No support for the adapter on Windows NT
----------------------------------------

You cannot use the Intel PRO/Wireless 2011 PCI Adapter on Windows NT.


Installing the adapter on Windows NT
------------------------------------

Before installing the driver for an Intel PRO/Wireless 2011B LAN Adapter 
on Windows NT, you must remove all previous versions of the driver. 
Otherwise, the installation fails and an error message displays. To 
remove previous versions of the adapter, do the following:

1. Right-click Network Neighborhood.
2. From the list of adapters, select the Intel PRO/Wireless Adapter 
currently installed.
3. Click Remove and close Network Properties.
4. When prompted, turn off the computer, insert the new Intel 
PRO/Wireless Adapter, and reboot the computer.
5. Follow the instructions for installing the adapter on Windows NT. The
instructions are available in the Intel PRO/Wireless Adapter User's Guide.

Note that the latest version of the Intel PRO/Wireless LAN Adapter is
2011B, not 2011.

TCP/IP settings for profiles
----------------------------

Currently, profile settings for the Intel PRO/Wireless LAN 5000 Adapters 
do not include the ability to define TCP/IP settings.  All profiles for
this adapter use the same TCP/IP settings defined in the TCP/IP properties
for the adapter.


Intel PRO/Wireless 5000 LAN Access Point recognizes alpha characters
--------------------------------------------------------------------

The Access Point allows you to enter alpha characters in the IP address
fields. If you enter alpha characters, the Access Point does not recognize 
the address and uses an unpredictable IP address. Make sure that you enter
only numerical values into fields used for IP address settings. 


Driver Installation on windows 2000
------------------------------------

After installing the Intel PRO/Wireless 5000 LAN Adapter driver on Windows
2000, it takes up to two minutes for the adapter to confirm 
the wireless settings.


Performing the Suspend/Resume function in Windows 2000
------------------------------------------------------

When you are running Windows 2000 and use the Suspend/Resume feature, a 
message may display indicating that you need to close and open the Intel 
PRO/Wireless LAN application due to changes in the Device Manager. If this 
occurs, you must close Intel PROSet II and open the application again.


Using Peer-to-Peer (Ad Hoc) mode
--------------------------------

When you are running the Intel PRO/Wireless 5000 LAN Adapter in
peer-to-peer mode, you must specify a channel. This channel must be a 
clear channel. In other words, the peer-to-peer clients should not be 
operated within an area that is also being serviced by an Access Point
using the same channel. If so, the peer-to-peer clients may fail to connect.

To correct this, do one of the following:

 - Do not specify a channel in peer-to-peer mode, or select the All Channels 
   option. This option allows peer-to-peer clients to scan the network for 
   a channel that is not being used.

 - Configure the peer-to-peer clients to use a channel that is clear in the
   area where the peer-to-peer clients are operating.


Installing the adapter in Windows XP
------------------------------------

After installing the Intel PRO/Wireless 5000 LAN Adapter in a computer
running Windows XP, the adapter does not associate with an access point
automatically. To fix the problem, physically remove the adapter and insert
it again.


Viewing the Ethernet address for an adapter
-------------------------------------------

When you edit a profile in Intel PROSet II, you can use a locally
administered Ethernet address by checking the Locally Administered Address
checkbox. If you select this option and you view the Ethernet address from 
the General Tab in PROSet, an incorrect address displays. To view the correct 
address, go to a DOS prompt and type IPConfig/All.


Using the Age Out statistic in Ad Hoc Mode
------------------------------------------

In Intel PROSet II, view the statistics for other computers in your Ad Hoc 
network by clicking the Settings tab and then View Peers. One column displays
the Age Out statistic. For Intel PRO/Wireless 5000 LAN Adapters, this statistic
does not apply.

How To Update Drivers Manually

After your driver has been downloaded, follow these simple steps to install it.

  • Expand the archive file (if the download file is in zip or rar format).

  • If the expanded file has an .exe extension, double click it and follow the installation instructions.

  • Otherwise, open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start menu and selecting Device Manager.

  • Find the device and model you want to update in the device list.

  • Double-click on it to open the Properties dialog box.

  • From the Properties dialog box, select the Driver tab.

  • Click the Update Driver button, then follow the instructions.

Very important: You must reboot your system to ensure that any driver updates have taken effect.
