From the Install From Disk window, choose Browse, and then select one of the following files: --Windows 95/98/2000, choose [CD-ROM drive]/Driver/w9x_w2k.inf --Windows NT 4.0, choose [CD-ROM drive]/Driver/WinNT4/MC_WNT4.inf ======================================================================================= OPTIMIZING PRINTING PERFORMANCE OVER A PARALLEL PORT This information applies only to PCs with Windows 95/98. On PCs with Windows 2000/NT 4.0, the parallel port is controlled by printer driver software. The parallel port on your PC is designed to operate in various communication modes or protocols. These modes control how the PC communicates with your printer. Two of these modes are SPP-Standard Parallel Port -this is the default mode on most PCs (occasionally referred to as compatibility, normal, or output only) ECP-Extended Capabilities Port The speed that SPP communicates over the parallel port varies on different PCs. It's likely that the current settings for your PC will meet your common printing needs. However, in the event that performance over the parallel port is inadequate (for example, with large, complex print jobs), you will need to change the communication mode of the parallel port to ECP mode. Caution: Using the wrong type of parallel cable can also cause poor performance. Be sure that you're using a Centronics IEEE 1284 bidirectional parallel cable. ECP Setting Instructions You can configure the parallel port mode on Windows 95/98 systems via your computer's BIOS (Basic Input/Output System). The BIOS is responsible for controlling the many of the hardware settings on your PC. The method of accessing and changing the BIOS settings varies for each PC vendor (and in some cases, for each model). In general, the two most common methods for accessing the BIOS are by pressing a particular key or keys on your keyboard when the PC is first turned on -or- running a setup program provided by the manufacturer. Refer to your PC manual for specific instructions on how to access the BIOS and change the parallel port mode. ======================================================================================= NT WORKSTATION MEMORY AND LARGE MEDIA SIZES Incomplete printing may occur when printing 1200x600 dpi duplex on larger media sizes (B4-JIS, Legal, A3, Ledger, and 13x19") from an NT workstation with 32 MB RAM. Increasing the workstation memory to at least 64 MB RAM eliminates this problem. ======================================================================================= WINDOWS 95B PLUG AND PLAY INSTALLATION When installing the printer driver using Plug and Play on a PC using Windows 95B, you may find it necessary to repeatedly choose the path to printer driver support files ([CD-ROM drive]:\Driver) as the files are being installed. ======================================================================================= CANCELING PLUG AND PLAY USING WINDOWS 95 If the Plug and Play printer driver installation is canceled, and then followed by printer driver installation using the Add Printer Wizard, LPT1 port errors may occur when attempting to print a test page or when attempting to send any print job via the LPT1 port. To avoid or eliminate errors, restart the PC after the driver installation is complete. ======================================================================================= WINDOWS 2000 NETWORK SERVER INSTALLATION The printer driver will not install properly on NT workstations from a Windows 2000 server. Use the Utilities and Documentation CD-ROM to install the printer driver on each NT workstation. ======================================================================================= MONITOR RESOLUTION SETTING The printer driver application does not fully display when monitor resolution is set to 640x480 pixels. You must increase your monitor resolution to 600x800 pixels or greater for full viewing of the application window. See your operating system online help for information about changing your monitor resolution setting. ======================================================================================= WINDOWS 95 PORT NAME Entering a colon (:) as the last character of the port name may enhance printer performance. For example, the port name "myprinter" should be changed to "myprinter:" for increased performance. ======================================================================================= AFTER DRIVER INSTALLATION After loading the magicolor 6100 DeskLaser printer driver, be sure to restart your PC, allowing the operating system to properly load with the new software installed. ======================================================================================= COLLATING PRINT JOBS When setting up a multi-copy print job for collated output, turn off collation in your application and select collate from the printer driver. Using this method will minimize the print spool file size and result in faster printing. ======================================================================================= PRINTING COLOR WATERMARKS Color watermarks will print monochrome on pages that contain no color. ======================================================================================= DASHED LINES IN MICROSOFT WORD 2000 DOCUMENTS If dashed lines in Microsoft Word 2000 documents printed from PCs using Windows 2000/NT4.0 are missing, use one of the following procedures: --Set the line thickness to 0.5 pts. or greater. --From the Image tab in the printer driver, set the print resolution to 600x600 dpi--the line may be thin, but it should be legible. --Change the dashed line to a solid line. ======================================================================================= BOOKLET PRINTING USING MICROSOFT WORD Selecting booklet printing from the Microsoft Word application may result in incorrect output. To avoid problems, choose booklet printing only in the printer driver and not in the Word application. ======================================================================================= PRINTING FROM ADOBE ACROBAT READER When printing to the magicolor 6100 DeskLaser printer, Adobe Acrobat viewers may generate very large print spool files. Your PC must have sufficient hard drive space to process these large files. If you experience problems printing from an Acrobat viewer try one or more of the following: --Verify that you are using the magicolor 6100 DeskLaser printer driver --Reduce the print resolution to 600x600 dpi --In the Print Dialog box, select Print As Image --Send fewer pages with each print job --In the Print Dialog box, deselect Fit To Page ======================================================================================= ADOBE ACROBAT READER AND WINDOWS 2000 Printing problems have been discovered on PCs running Windows 2000 and early releases of Adobe Acrobat Reader 4. To avoid printing problems, use Acrobat Reader version 4.05b or later. You can download the latest version of Acrobat Reader from Adobe's website (http//www.adobe.com). ======================================================================================= PRINTING FROM CORELDRAW When printing from CorelDraw (version 9), large print spool files may be generated. Your PC must have sufficient hard drive space to process these large files. If you experience problems printing from CorelDraw, try one or more of the following: --Verify that you are using the magicolor 6100 DeskLaser printer driver --Reduce the print resolution to 600x600 dpi --In the Print Dialog box, select Rasterize Entire Page ADDITIONAL TIP: If you see unexpected results in the printed output from CorelDraw, try changing the "Send Beziers and Paths to the driver" setting. To change this setting, go to the Tools/Options menu, click on Global/Printing/Driver Compatibility, select the magicolor 6100 driver, and then toggle the option "Send Beziers and Paths to driver." ======================================================================================= SETTING COLOR OPTION IN PICTURE PUBLISHER PRINT DIALOG WINDOW After the initial installation of the magicolor 6100 DeskLaser printer driver, the Picture Publisher print dialog may default to gray. Change the print dialog setting to color. Once set, the application will retain this setting. ======================================================================================= MICROSOFT EXCEL PRINT QUALITY SETTINGS Microsoft Excel files that are saved with the application's Print Quality setting at a print resolution not supported by the printer may encounter partial printing, scaling problems, or loss of color. To allow for proper printing, go to the File menu and choose Page Setup. From the Page Setup window, set the Print Quality to 600 dpi, choose OK, and then save the file. The file should print correctly with the saved Print Quality setting. ======================================================================================= WATERMARKS NOT PRINTING--KATAKANA DRIVER INSTALLATION If the printer driver is installed with Katakana as the language selection, all watermark text must use a Japanese font in order to correctly print. Selection of a non-Japanese font for the watermark will prevent the watermark from printing. ======================================================================================= COLOR MATCHING The magicolor 6100 DeskLaser can simulate sRGB device output through ICM color matching techniques. When this technique is applied, the objects within the document are identified as bitmap objects, text objects, or graphic objects. Color matching applies primarily to bitmap objects, and has little or no affect on text and graphic objects. Using Driver's Matching When Use Driver's Matching is selected from the Image tab, bitmap objects are matched using one of the two ICM profiles created for the printer. Graphic objects are printed using native colors but include a color adjustment to reduce the purple tint of blue objects. If blue graphics appear purple, select Use Driver's Matching to enable the blue adjustment. The ICM profile files (dl61006.icm for 600x600 dpi, and dl610012.icm for 1200x600 dpi) are placed in the Windows\System\Color directory when the printer driver is installed. If these files are renamed, modified or deleted, the printer will print using native colors (as if color matching had been disabled). ======================================================================================= UNINSTALLING THE PRINTER DRIVER If you need to remove the printer driver files from your PC, use the appropriate uninstall method listed below: If you used the Utilities and Documentation CD-ROM installer application to load your printer driver, use the following steps to uninstall the printer driver from your PC. 1) From the Start menu, choose Programs, and then choose MINOLTA-QMS PRINTER UTILITIES. 2) Choose Uninstall. 3) Select magicolor 6100 DeskLaser from the list. 4) Choose Uninstall. 5) Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the printer driver removal.
