The driver (SMC1208.SYS) contained in the directory WIN98 is for
the following SMC PCI Ethernet adapter:

        SMC EZ Card 10 PCI (SMC1208)

The driver (SMC1208.SYS) conforms to the Network Driver Interface
Specification (NDIS) 4.0, and is used with Microsoft Windows 98.

(A) Installing the NDIS4 Miniport driver on Microsoft Windows 98

    1. Plug the SMC1208 adapter into one of the Master PCI
       slots of your PCI platform.
    2. Turn the ower ON, then boot into Windows 98.
    3. When Windows 98 prompts with "PCI Ethernet Controller" in
       "New Hardware Found" dialog box, click the "Next" button.
    4. Select "Search for the best driver for your device (Recommended)"
       in the "Add New Hardware Wizard" dialog box, then click the
       "Next" button.
    5. Insert the SMC1208 Driver Diskette in your floppy drive.
    6. Select "Specify a location" and type the Path "A:\WIN98" in the
       "Add New Hardware Wizard" dialog box, then click the "Next" button.
    7. Click the "Next" button in the "Add New Hardware Wizard" dialog box.
    8. Windows 98 will prompt with "SMC EZ Card 10 PCI (SMC1208)"
       in the "Add New Hardware Wizard" dialog box.
    9. Click the "Next" button in the "Add New Hardware Wizard" dialog box, then
       Windows 98 will copy the driver (SMC1208.SYS) from A:\WIN98
       to the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory and the SMC1208.INF file from A:\WIN98
       to the C:\WINDOWS\INF directory.
   10. When Windows prompts with "SMC EZ Card 10 PCI (SMC1208)"
       in the "Add New Hardware Wizard" dialog box, click the "Finsh" button.
   11. Remove the SMC1208 Driver Diskette from your floppy drive.
   12. Restart your computer to initialize the network function.

       NOTICE!! C:\WINDOWS is the directory where your Windows 98
                O.S. is located.


(B) Configuring the NDIS4 Miniport driver on Microsoft Windows 98
====================================================================

    1. Click the "My Computer" icon in the Main Program Group.
    2. Click the "Control Panel" icon in the My Computer window.
    3. Click the "Network" icon in the Control Panel window.
    4. Select the "SMC EZ Card 10 PCI (SMC1208)" item
       from the "Network" dialog box, then click the "Properties" button.
    5. Click the "Advanced" button in the "SMC EZ Card 10 PCI (SMC1208)
       Properties" dialog box.
    6. Click the OK button in the "Network" dialog box.
    7. Restart your computer to implement the new configuration.

How To Update Drivers Manually

After your driver has been downloaded, follow these simple steps to install it.

  • Expand the archive file (if the download file is in zip or rar format).

  • If the expanded file has an .exe extension, double click it and follow the installation instructions.

  • Otherwise, open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start menu and selecting Device Manager.

  • Find the device and model you want to update in the device list.

  • Double-click on it to open the Properties dialog box.

  • From the Properties dialog box, select the Driver tab.

  • Click the Update Driver button, then follow the instructions.

Very important: You must reboot your system to ensure that any driver updates have taken effect.
