SUPPORTED NETWORK CARDS SMC's EZ Card 10 Ethernet PCI Network Cards: o SMC1208T o SMC1208BT o SMC1208BTA The SETUP.EXE program is used for the following LAN adapter: SMC EZ Card 10 PCI Ethernet Adapter This subdirectory includes the following files: README.TXT This File SETUP.EXE Hardware configuration and diagnostics program The SETUP program is used to set the adapter's configuration and diagnose the adapter's hardware. Note ==== ************************************** * Conflict with Microsoft EMM386 * ************************************** The PCI adapter can only function with the EMM386.exe memory manager program version 4.49 or later. You can verify its version number by entering EMM386 at the DOS Prompt. Do not specify the "HIGHSCAN" option with the EMM386.exe statement in your config.sys file or your system will hang. If you run MEMMAKER and select Custom Setup, do not specify "Aggressively scan upper memory", or it will automatically insert the HIGHSCAN flag into the EMM386 command line. This parameter cannot be removed once it's installed, doing so will cause the extended memory manager to malfunction. Starting the Program ==================== A. From DOS, type the following indicating the directory or drive location of the SETUP.EXE program. Then press <Enter>: A:\SETUP>SETUP <Enter> B. Identify your adapter. Use the up/down arrow keys to highlight the appropriate adapter name. Note ---- If there is more than one adapter installed inside the host PC, the Hardware Configuration module will prompt you to specify the card you want to configure. In the meantime, PCI BIOS will automatically resolve any I/O base or IRQ conflicts, then assign the available I/O base or IRQ for the adapter. C. SETUP has the following functions to set the adapter's configuration and diagnose the adapter's hardware. View Current Configuration Set Up New Configuration Run EEPROM Test Run Diagnostic On Board Run Diagnostic On Network Exit SETUP View Current Configuration ========================== 1. Use the up/down arrow keys to select the "VIEW CURRENT CONFIGURATION" option and press <Enter> to view the current adapter's configuration settings. 2. This function displays its configuration to include the following items: * Ethernet Address * Medium Type (AUTO DETECT, AUI) * Full-Duplex * I/O Base Address * Interrupt * Boot ROM Size 3. Press the SPACE BAR key or ESC key to return to the main menu. Set Up New Configuration ======================== 1. Choose "SET UP NEW CONFIGURATION" by highlighting the option using the up/down arrow keys. Then press <Enter> to continue and set the adapter's configuration manually. 2. This function displays the following items that can be manually set to a different mode: * Medium Type (AUTO DETECT, AUI) * Full-Duplex * Boot ROM Size 3. If the value for any item is changed, press the ESC key and ENTER key to update the item. 4. If there are no changes for any item, press the ESC key to return to the main menu. Run EEPROM Test =============== 1. Choose "RUN EEPROM TEST" by highlighting the option using the up/down arrow keys. Then press <Enter> to test the adapter's On-Board EEPROM. 2. The program will run READ tests on each register in the EEPROM. Run Diagnostic On Board ======================= 1. Choose the "RUN DIAGNOSTIC ON BOARD" option to test the adapter's components and its installation and then press <Enter> to continue. 2. The program will run the following tests: * Configuration test * I/O Registers test * Internal loopback test * External loopback test * RAM test 3. This test monitors the adapter and corresponding cabling system. However, it does not test the network's condition. The screen displays the PASSED or FAILED count for each test. If a test fails, press the space bar to display the reason for failure and possible solutions. 4. The adapter test checks the following items --- * Configuration Test checks the initial status of the Ethernet Controller * I/O Registers Test checks I/O accessibility * Internal Loopback Test checks adapter's controller * External Loopback Test checks the network link * RAM Test checks the condition of on-board RAM Run Diagnostic On Network ========================= 1. Choose "RUN DIAGNOSTIC ON NETWORK" by highlighting the option using the up/down arrow keys. Then press <Enter> to continue. 2. The program will thoroughly verify your adapter's ability to communicate with another device on the network. 3. Set up at least one computer as a Responder and at least one as an Initiator. 4. The Responder displays the status of communications with each Initiator on the network. 5. The Initiator displays the current Responder and the status of corresponding communications. Exit SETUP ========== Choose "EXIT SETUP" option to leave the [SETUP] program and return to DOS.
