INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS:
-------------------------

This document contains information to assist you with the installation
of Windows NT Workstation version 4.0 on the IBM ThinkPad 770X. These
instructions make the following assumptions:
- No additional hardware connected to the system, i.e. external mouse,
keyboard, docking stations, pcmcia cards, etc.
- No Network Card connected to the system. ( Can be added later. These
instructions do not tell how to setup/configure network cards.)
- That you have Backed up your software and personal data files on the
  hard disk.

NOTE:
DVD MOVIE PLAY BACK IS **NOT** SUPPORTED UNDER WINDOWS NT!

INSTALLING WINDOWS NT 4.0 WORKSTATION

1. Read the Windows NT installation guide.
   - If you plan to use OS/2 Warp with Windows NT, you need to use the
OS/2 Warp Boot Manager. For more information, read Installing IBM
OS/2 in the Online User's Guide.

You can install Windows NT using the internal CD-ROM drive or an
externally attached CD-ROM drive. However, if your computer does not
have a CD-ROM drive, or if a port replicator is not available, use one
of the following two alternative ways to install Windows NT:

A.) Using an external CD-ROM drive in a DOS environment
If you have an external CD-ROM drive that connects under a DOS
environment, you can install Windows NT in DOS:

 1. Insert the Windows NT compact disc in the external CD-ROM drive.
 2. Go to the CD-ROM directory; then go to the \I386 directory.
For example, if your CD-ROM drive is drive D, go to D:\I386
 3. At the command prompt, type WINNT; then press Enter.
    For example, D:\I386>winnt
 4. Follow the instructions on the screen.

B.) Using a network server
You can install Windows NT on multiple computers by first copying the
Windows NT master source files to a shared drive on a network server.
After connecting your computer to a network, such as with the DOS LAN
requester, you can install the files from the network server to your
computer at the DOS command prompt.

2.) Boot off the three NT boot diskettes or, if you have the internal
CDROM drive set to bootable, boot off the NT CDROM.

Note: DO NOT use diskettes made during the installation of NT on another
       machine!

3.) At the Windows NT Workstation Setup window, you will be given a list
of options. To continue with the installation, press Enter.
4.) At the next window, it states that it will automatically detect floppy
controllers and hard drives. Press Enter to continue.
5.) It will then say that it has detected the following device: IDE CD-ROM
<ATAPI 1.2>/PCI IDE Controller. Press Enter to continue.
6.) Read through the licensing agreement (use the PAGE DOWN key to read
the entire agreement). When finished you are prompted to hit the F8
key to agree or ESC if you do not agree. If you agree, press the F8
    key to continue.
7.) It will then give you a list of hardware and software components:
       Computer: Standard PC
       Display: Auto Detect
Keyboard: XT, AT, or Enhanced Keyboard <83-104 keys>
       Keyboard Layout: US
Pointing Device: Microsoft Mouse Port Mouse <includes >
Make sure No Changes: The above list matches my computer is
highlighted and press Enter to continue.

8.) It will then show the existing partitions on your hard drive. Make
sure the drive you want to install Windows NT on is highlighted (if
you only have one partition then there will only be one drive to
    select) and press Enter.
9.) It will then prompt you to select the type of file system you want
to install on the hard drive. You have the following options:
Format the partition using the FAT file system
Format the partition using the NTFS file system
       Convert the partition to NTFS
Leave the current file system intact <no changes>

Select one of the options above and press Enter to continue (if you
are installing Windows NT on top of your current operating system,
then you will want to select one of the last two options. Select
NTFS only if your current operating system supports NTFS, which
Windows 95 and 98 do not). If you selected one of the first two
options, it will warn you that formatting your hard drive will erase
all data on your hard drive. If you wish to continue, press F to
format the hard drive. If you selected to convert the partition to
NTFS it will give you a warning that the drive will be inaccessible
to any operating system other than Windows NT. If you wish to
    continue press C.
10.) If you selected to format the partition, you will be prompted for the
installation location after the formatting has completed. To accept
the default location, press Enter. If you chose to convert the
partition to NTFS, the installation will continue and the conversion
will take place on the first boot of Windows NT.
11.) It will then say that it will examine your hard drive. Press Enter
to continue. After it has examined your hard drive (it may take
several minutes) it will begin copying files to the hard drive.
12.) After it has finished copying files, remove the diskette from the
floppy drive and press Enter to restart the computer.
13.) At the Windows NT Workstation Setup window, click on Next to
     continue.
14.) You will then be given a list of setup options. Select Portable and
then click on Next to continue.
15.) Enter you name and organization and then click on Next to continue.
16.) Enter in the CD Key (this is provided with your Windows NT 4.0
Workstation software) and then click on Next to continue.
17.) Enter in a computer name to identify your computer on a network.
After entering it, click Next to continue.
18.) Enter a password for the Administrator account. After entering the
password and confirming it, click Next to continue.
19.) It will then ask if you wish to create an Emergency Repair disk.
Make sure that Yes is selected and then click on Next.
20.) It will then ask which component you would like to install. To
     accept the default, click Next.
21.) Click Next . It will then prompt you as to how this computer will
participate on a network. Click on Do not connect this computer to
a network at this time and then click on Next to continue. Click on
     Finish to complete setup.

Note: The networking components may be added later from the Network icon
in Control Panel. When you are ready install networking support, please
make sure the drivers for your network adapter are available and that you
have all the required information about your network.

22.) At the Date/Time Properties windows, select the appropriate time
zone, check the date and time and then click on Close.
23.) At the Detected Display window, click on OK to continue. At the
Display Properties window, click OK. The installation program will
then begin copying files to the hard drive.
24.) It will prompt you to label a blank floppy disk as the Emergency
Repair Disk and then to insert it into the floppy drive. Do so and
     then click on OK.
25.) After it is complete, remove the diskette from the floppy drive and
     click on Restart Computer.
26.) At the Begin Logon window, press the CTRL+ALT+DEL key to logon. Type
in your Administrator password and click on OK and you are ready to
     use Windows NT 4.0 Workstation.
