Novelty Printing:
How do I do T shirt transfers?

Heat Transfer Guide for the FARGO PrimeraTM,
PrimeraProTM and PicturaTM 310 Color Printers

  1. Wax Thermal T-shirt Transfers
       a. Wax Thermal T-shirt transfers can be
          made by using the Primera,
          PrimeraPro, Elite or Pictura 310
          Color Printer in conjunction with
          FARGO's special T-shirt transfer
paper and a color or monochrome wax
          thermal ribbon. Refer to the
following steps to create your own
          wax thermal T-shirt transfers.
       b. Things You Will Need:
        o Heat Press/Large Hand Iron
        o Wax Thermal Ribbon
        o T-shirt Transfer Paper
        o White T-shirt or Sweatshirt

  2. Creating and Printing Your Image
       a. Install the appropriate wax thermal
          ribbon (3-color, 4-color, or
          monochrome) into your printer. Wax
          thermal ribbons are distinguished by
their cardboard cores. Make sure you
          have also selected the appropriate
ribbon type option from within the
          Print Setup dialog box.
       b. Mirror the image you wish to print by
          making the appropriate selection from
          within the
       c. software application program you are
          using.
       d. Place the T-shirt transfer paper into
the printer's Paper Input Tray so
          that the purple lines
       e. are facing upward.
       f. Print the image.
       g. Once printed, you may apply the image
to any WHITE, cotton or polyester
          blend T-shirt.
  3. Applying a T-shirt Transfer
       a. Using an Iron
            i. Pre-heat iron to hottest
               setting.
ii. Place the shirt on a flat, hard
               surface (such as a kitchen
               cutting board). Iron the shirt
so that it is completely flat
               and free of wrinkles.
iii. Place the T-shirt transfer onto
the shirt with the image side
               facing down.
iv. Move the iron over the transfer
               sheet in a figure-eight-like
               motion for about 20 seconds.
               Then, immediately peel the
               T-shirt transfer backing off of
               the shirt.
            v. Note:Due to the numerous kinds
               of irons available, time and
               temperature may vary. Some
               experimentation may be required
               (see "Helpful Hints" section for
               suggestions).
       b. Using a Heat Press
            i. Pre-heat the press to
               approximately 325º F.
ii. Place the shirt on the heat
press bench and press a few
               seconds to unwrinkle shirt.
iii. Place the T-shirt transfer onto
the shirt with the image side
               facing down.
iv. Press the shirt for 8-15 seconds
               with light to medium pressure.
            v. Note:Time, temperature, and
               pressure may vary from heat
               press to heat press.
  4. Helpful Hints For Wax Thermal T-shirt
     Transfers
       a. When transferring full-page Pictura
          310 T-shirt transfers, always use a
          heat press rather
       b. than a hand iron. A hand iron is
simply not large enough to adequately
          transfer a large, B/A3 super-size
          image.
       c. Before transferring an image, you
should cut away the unprinted portion
          of the transfer
       d. paper so that the excess transfer
material does not show up on the
          garment.
       e. Store the T-shirt transfer paper in a
cool dry place. Failure to do so may
result in the wax not completely
transferring off of the ribbon and
onto the transfer paper. If you are
using your printer outside, in a hot
          or humid environment, store the
transfer paper in a cooler along with
a plastic ice pack. Do not use an ice
pack which could melt, since moisture
          will damage the transfer paper!
       f. Use only FARGO-brand supplies when
          printing with your Primera,
          PrimeraPro, or Pictura 310. Failure
          to use the proper FARGO-brand
supplies will usually result in poor
          print quality and could possibly
          damage the printer.
       g. If, when transferred to fabric, the
image appears overly dark or "muddy"
looking, try using one or a
          combination of the following
          suggestions:
       h. Slightly reduce the amount of heat
you are using to transfer the image.
       i. If using a heat press, decrease the
amount of pressure you are applying.
       j. Reduce the amount of time in which
          you are pressing the transfer.
       k. Lighten the printed image by
          adjusting the printer's intensity
level from within the Printer Setup
          dialog box (see printer Operator's
          Manual for instructions). Often
times, an image can also be lightened
          from within your particular software
          application program (see appropriate
          software documentation).
       l. If, when printed on the T-shirt
          transfer paper, the printed image
seems to print too lightly or seems
not to print at all, make sure that
you are using a wax thermal ribbon
          and not a dye-sublimation ribbon. A
          wax thermal ribbon has cardboard
          cores, where as a dye-sublimation
          ribbon has plastic cores.
