NOTES ON THE HP DESKJET SERIES PRINTER DRIVER FOR MICROSOFT(R) WINDOWS(TM) 3.0 and 3.1 ======================================================= This document contains important information about the HP DeskJet Series printer driver that supplements the on-line Help. These topics are covered: * Printing in Grayscale * Printable Areas/Margin Settings * System Configuration * WIN.INI File Modification * Enhanced Error Detection * Network Support * Application Notes PRINTING IN GRAYSCALE ===================== For HP DeskJet 500C and 550C Printers: ---------------------------------------------------- The default print mode setting and the default dithering method provide best quality black text printing. To print in grayscale, select the Black/Grayscale print mode and one of the following dithering methods: Pattern, Scatter, or Cluster. To print black text after printing grayscale, use either the Black and Color with any dithering method or the Black/Grayscale with the Standard dithering method. For the HP DeskJet 500 Printer: -------------------------------------------- The default dithering setting is Standard Black. To print in grayscale, select one of the following dithering methods: Pattern, Scatter, or Cluster. To print black text after printing grayscale select the Standard Black dithering method. PRINTABLE AREA/MARGIN SETTINGS ================================ The printable area on a page using the HP DeskJet Series printer driver differs from the printable area on a page using DOS applications. For HP DeskJet 500C and 550C printers only: In Windows, the top and bottom margins of your document will differ if you are using a print mode which allows color. The top margin and bottom margins of a document printed in a print mode which allows color will print 1/6 in. shifted up from the top and bottom margins of a document printed in a print which allows black and grayscale. Also, margins may vary when you print the same documents using different printers. You may need to adjust margin settings, pagination, or reformat your document. Use these tips to minimize the need to reformat your documents for printing with other printers: * Use fonts that are common to the printers that you are using. * Increase your top and bottom margins. For example, if the minimum setting is 1/2 in. for one printer and 1 in. for another printer, set your margins for 1 in. for all documents. SYSTEM CONFIGURATION ====================== An 80286 processor or greater is required to use the HP DeskJet Series printer driver. Disk Requirements The HP DeskJet Series printer driver requires approximately 3 MB of free disk space for installation of the driver and the printer fonts that come with it (Courier, CG Times, Univers, and Symbol). Using Serial (RS-232-C) Cables For HP DeskJet, DeskJet PLUS, DeskJet 500, 500C, and 550C printers only. To use serial (RS-232-C) cables, make sure that "Flow Control" (in the Settings dialog box from the Ports dialog box in the Control Panel) is set to "Hardware." WIN.INI FILE MODIFICATION ======================== In some instances, solutions may involve modifying your WIN.INI file. If you are not familiar with the WIN.INI format, modification is not recommended. If you are familiar with this process, use the following recommendations: * Copy your current WINI.INI file to WIN.OLD. * Use a text editor such as the Notepad accessory. * Locate the first occurance of the section heading that you will be modifying in the WIN.INI file. For example, if you are adding a line to the [STATDLL] section, locate the first occurance of that heading and then add the recommended line. If the section heading does not exist, add it the end of the WIN.INI file and then add the recommended line. * Restart Windows after making the modifications. ENHANCED ERROR DETECTION ======================== The HP DeskJet Series printer driver has the ability to detect printer error states such as out of paper or wrong print cartridge installed. This "enhanced error detection" mode is only available when the printer is connected directly to a computer (not over a network) with either a standard parallel (Centronics) or serial (RS-232-C) cable. When the printer is printing across a network, to a file, or through another third party software print product that receives input from a print file (e.g., LPT1.PRN or LPT1.OS2), the printer driver detects this, and enhanced error detection is not available. If you have unresolvable hardware or software printing conflicts, turn off the enhanced error detection to try to resolve the problem. To turn off the enhanced error detection, add the following line in the [STATDLL] section of your WIN.INI file. override=yes Refer to the "WIN.INI File Modification" section in this document before you modify your WIN.INI file. If overide=yes is not added to the WIN.INI file, or if "override=no," the printer driver will default to using enhanced error detection. If the printer's status dialog remains on the screen for an inordinate amount of time (with no action taken) and no error messages are displayed, check the following: 1. Make sure the printer setup dialog box caption match the printer model that you are using. If not, reinstall the printer driver, and select the correct printer model. 2. Make sure the interface cable is connected properly and securely. There may be a data communication problem. If the problem continues, your interface cable may have a problem, try a new cable. (Remember that, if you are using a standard serial cable, printing will be slow.) 3. Make sure that enhanced error detection is disabled. If it is enabled try overriding it, as described earlier in this section. Using Print Manager With enhanced error detection enabled, Windows Print Manager is ignored by the HP DeskJet Series printer driver. With Print Manager enabled or disabled, you may continue to work in other applications while the application from which you are currently printing finishes the print job. Also, you may use Print Manager for network or other local printing with all printer drivers other than the HP DeskJet Series printer driver. With enhanced error detection disabled, you may use Print Manager with the HP DeskJet Series printer driver. This is not recommended, since it usually takes longer to print a document with Print Manager than without it. If you choose to use Print Manager with the HP DeskJet Series printer driver, you must first turn off the printer driver's enhanced error detection as described in the previous section and then place an "x" in the check box next to "Use Print Manager" in the Control Panel. NETWORK SUPPORT ================= Hewlett-Packard does not support network configurations where DeskJet family printers are used as shared devices. However, installing the HP DeskJet Series printer driver to a Windows network is supported when the printer is not used as a shared device. Two types of network installations are possible: central installation and local installation. Central installation is the default mode that the HP Setup install program selects. The installation program copies driver files to the Windows system directory. If the Windows system directory is on a network drive that is write protected, an error message recommending local installation appears on your screen. Local installation is selected by typing HPSETUP /L. If you choose local installation, the install program copies all driver files to the Windows directory on the local system. APPLICATION NOTES ================== At the time the HP DeskJet Series printer driver was released, the following software application limitations existed: For many applications (e.g., Microsoft Excel), the print job is cancelled by means other than the application's cancel dialog, the application may display an error message. Ignore this message and continue. For many applications, printing crosshatching is not supported in Pattern, Cluster or Scatter dithering methods. Select Standard or Standard Black mode to print crosshatching. For the HP DeskJet 550C printer with many applications, the print on envelopes may appear in the wrong orientation when envelope printing is selected with the envelope icon in the application's tool bar. Use the Printer Setup dialog box to select envelope printing. ADOBE ILLUSTRATOR v4.0: In Draft mode some graphics won't print and may cause application errors. Use Normal or Presentation mode.
