i. Introduction

This readme file will guide you in using a set of files to upgrade your printer firmware.  

Windows
The HP Printer Firmware Upgrade Utility v1.1 can be used to upgrade firmware in both locally and remotely connected (locally shared, JetDirect, LPR and Standard TCP/IP) printers.

ii. Download Instructions

1. Create a new folder on the hard drive in which to save the downloaded files.

	a. Right-click the Start button and then select Explore.

	b. Click Local Disk (C:).

	c. Click File, New, and then Folder.

	d. Type a name for the new folder and then press Enter.

2. Download the firmware package BIJ1100.EXE (Windows).

3. Double-click the self-extracting firmware package and extract the files to the same folder.

4. Check that you have all the following files before proceeding.

iii. Upgrade Instructions


Upgrade firmware using LPT (For Win 98, Win 2000 and Win XP)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1.	Connect hp business inkjet 1100 thru LPT:
2.	If you have already installed the printer driver via LPT, proceed to Step 3. If you have not installed the printer driver, insert hp business inkjet 1100 CD. Run setup.exe from the CD. Proceed and complete printer driver installation.
3.	Launch hpfdu.exe.
4.	Click "Browse" to select patch file: StartFlash_n_patch.PCL (this will set the printer to flash mode and patch the printer).
5.	Check "hp business inkjet 1100 series" printer at LPT1
6.	Click "Download" to send file to the printer.
7.	Look over at the printer to check if the Power and Resume LEDs are lighted. Lighted Power and Resume LEDs indicate that the printer is in Flash mode and is ready for firmware upgrading.
8.	Click "Browse" to select hp business inkjet 1100 firmware file: KMR1016A.fhx.
9.	Check "hp business inkjet 1100 series" printer at LPT1
10.	Click "Download" to begin printer firmware upgrading.
11.	Look over at the hp business inkjet printer to check if Power and Resume LEDs are blinking. Printer firmware is currently being upgraded. 
12.	* Do not power down the printer when firmware flashing is in progress. 
13.	Flashing is completed when the LEDs are turned off. 
14.	Press the Power button once to turn on the printer. 



Alternatively, upgrade firmware using LPT when printer fails to go to Ready (For Win 98, Win 2000 and Win XP)

1.	Set the printer to flash mode. 
	
	a.	Remove the power cord. 
	b.	While holding down the Resume (right most) and the Power button 			(left most), re-connect the power cord to the printer.
	c.	Check if the Power and Resume LEDs are lighted. Lighted Power and 		Resume LEDs indicate that the printer is in Flash mode and is ready 		for firmware upgrading.

2. 	Launch Command Prompt from Windows
3. 	From Command Prompt, go to the folder with the extracted firmware files (e.g. C:\BIJ1100)
4. 	To begin firmware upgrade, type the following and hit "Enter". This will set the printer to flash mode and patch the printer.
		copy /b StartFlash_n_patch.PCL lpt1

5.	Look over at the printer to check if the Power and Resume LEDs are lighted. Lighted Power and Resume LEDs indicate that the printer is in Flash mode and is ready for firmware upgrading.

6. 	To begin firmware upgrade, type the following and hit "Enter" 
		copy /b KMR1016A.fhx lpt1
7.	Look over at the hp business inkjet printer to check if Power and Resume LEDs are blinking. Printer firmware is currently being upgraded. 
8.	* Do not power down the printer when firmware flashing is in progress. 
9.	Flashing is completed when the LEDs are turned off. 
10.	Press the Power button once to turn on the printer. 


Upgrade firmware using USB (Strictly for Win 2000 and Win XP)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1.	Connect hp business inkjet 1100 thru USB:
2.	If you have already installed the printer driver via USB, proceed to Step 3.If you have not installed the printer driver, 
a.	PC will detect new hardware and will prompt user for printer driver
b.	Insert hp business inkjet 1100 CD and allow driver installation to continue
c.	A new printer and a corresponding USB port will be created. (Port number depending on system hardware enumeration (e.g. USB001.) For verification, go to "Start->Printers and Faxes" for WinXP or "Start->Settings->Printers" for Win2k and click on hp business inkjet 1100 series icon->properties->ports. 
3.	Launch hpfdu.exe
4.	Click "Browse" to select reflash file: StartFlash_n_patch.PCL (this will set printer to flash mode and patch the printer)
5.	Check "hp business inkjet 1100 series" printer at USB00x (e.g. USB001)
6.	Click "Download" to send file down to printer.
7.	Look over at the printer to check if the Power and Resume LEDs are lighted. Lighted Power and Resume LEDs indicate that the printer is in Flash mode and is ready for firmware upgrading.
8.	Exit the HP Firmware Download Utility application.
9.	When the printer is in Flash mode, Windows plug and play will detect the printer as a new device and Windows will automatically install a copy of the Business Inkjet driver 1100 driver and a new corresponding USB port will be created. (Depending on system hardware enumeration e.g. USB002) For verification, go to "Start->Printers and Faxes" for WinXP or "Start->Settings->Printers" for Win2k and click on hp business inkjet 1100 series icon->properties->ports. 

Please note that this copy of hp business inkjet driver 1100 driver printer is only temporary. It has to be deleted manually after firmware upgrade.  

10.	Launch hpfdu.exe again.
11.	Click 'Browse" to select hp business inkjet 1100 firmware file: KMR1016A.fhx 
12.	Check "hp business inkjet 1100 series" printer at the newly created temporary port USB00x (e.g. USB002) for firmware upgrading. 

13.	Click "Download" to begin printer firmware upgrading.
14.	Look over at hp business inkjet printer to check if Power and Resume LEDs are blinking. Printer firmware is currently being upgraded. This process will take approximately 3 mins.
15.	* Do not power down the printer when firmware flashing is in progress. 
16.	Flashing is completed when the LEDs are turned off. 
17.	Press the Power button once to turn on the printer. 
18.	Go to "Start->Printer and Faxes" for WinXP or "Start->Settings->Printers" for Win2k and delete away the copy of Business Inkjet 1100 series printer icon. e.g  hp business inkjet 1100 series (copy 2) icon
19.	Exit the HP Firmware Download Utility application.

iv. Key Fixes & Enhancements

1.	Issue: Low ink warning in Toolbox and other monitoring tools (e.g. HP WebJetadmin) triggered at 37.5% of remaining ink instead of 25%. Resolution: Fixed

2.	Issue: Print carriage colliding with paper kicker. Resolution: Fixed

3.	Issue: Printer NVRAM reset, causing loss certain printer information (e.g. calibration data). Resolution: Fixed

4.	Issue: Blank page eject when printing in Draft or Fast Normal mode. Resolution: Fixed

5.	Issue: False carriage jam (blinking Power and Resume LED) due to Ink Service Station braking circuit. Resolution: Fixed

6.	Issue: Slow printing when only one tray is installed (BIJ1100 series base model). Resolution: Fixed

7.	Issue: Blank pages eject when printer cover is opened during printing. Resolution: Fixed 

8.	Issue: Printer fail to perform Auto Pen Alignment during initial setup or during printhead change, leading to one blank page ejected at the end of every print job. Resolution: Fixed

v. Known Issues & Limitations

1. The Printer will be defaulted to Tray 1 after flashing flashing KMR1016A. 
2. The Printer may sound "weak" during some printer operations. This is a normal behavior.

How To Update Drivers Manually

After your driver has been downloaded, follow these simple steps to install it.

  • Expand the archive file (if the download file is in zip or rar format).

  • If the expanded file has an .exe extension, double click it and follow the installation instructions.

  • Otherwise, open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start menu and selecting Device Manager.

  • Find the device and model you want to update in the device list.

  • Double-click on it to open the Properties dialog box.

  • From the Properties dialog box, select the Driver tab.

  • Click the Update Driver button, then follow the instructions.

Very important: You must reboot your system to ensure that any driver updates have taken effect.
