instructions.txt Driver File Contents (5300WINXP.zip)

The following gives you instructions on more troubleshooting your XP driver. If it doesn't work the first time, re-execute 5300u.exe to re-install your driver, and then reboot.

1) Run 5300u.exe
You should run through it without a hitch, except for a message that will popup informing you that you are missing the dll files included in this zip file. If you encounter this message, place the dll files in your new C:/paprport folder. Reboot

If you ran through it without a hitch, reboot. If you encounter a missing dll message, read above.

2) Run 5300u.exe again. This will install your drivers once more, but now with the dll files that it needed the first time.

3) Run the OneTouch connection executable under "Paperport" in your start menu programs. If the scanner doesn't connect, reboot and try once more.

Passing Along My Vision
Scribbled by Russ Coover

http://www.uforesources.com/dlldownload.html

I own a Visioneer 5300 USB One Touch Scanner. When I went to Visioneer's Web site to try to find an XP driver, I found several lists of scanners there. The first is for those which have a downloadable XP driver. The second list is for those which they intend to write a driver. The third list is of scanners that had been tested with their older Windows drivers and found to work. My scanner was not listed, but I found they did have a 98 / ME / 2k driver listed. So, out of desperation (who wants to trash a perfectly working scanner?), I downloaded the driver, executed it, plugged in the scanner, and rebooted.

When the computer booted up, I got an error message that a dynamic link library (DLL) file was missing. I ran a Google search for the file, and a copy was found. A quick download later, I placed the file in my System32 folder. After the subsequent reboot, another file was missing. In all, five files were required to place in the System32 directory. They are: Maxkernl.dll, Maxcodec.dll, Pperr.dll, Maxrast.dll, and Maxutil.dll. They were all found at the same site which was recommended first by Google.

On the next reboot, I didn't see an error message - but the scanner still couldn't be found. I figured that maybe the driver needed to be reinstalled now that I had those five files installed. I was correct. Evidently, without one or more of them, the installation of the driver could not finish. I reinstalled the driver - and guess what? Another error message. The message said something about needing a file that couldn't be found and suggested I load the "disk" containing the file. I got out the disk that came with the scanner and loaded it. The installation of the driver started again and was successful. My Visioneer 5300 USB does work with Windows XP, and very well.

I'm writing this because I've heard lots of people are having trouble installing their Visioneer 5300s or 7600s. I know the above works for a 5300. I suspect the same is true for the 7600 and other models. I'd be happy to help others who have the same problem, but I believe I have answered pretty much any question you could ask. I certainly hope this helps someone.
