Contents: - Troubleshooting Notes - HP E-Vectra Notes - Memory Card Access Notes - I/O Notes - Parallel Port Notes - Infrared (IR) Port Notes (for those printers with IR) - Application Interactions - Network Installation Notes *** Troubleshooting Notes *** 1. Unable to re-establish connection between PC and printer after printer is turned off using the printer's power button: Disconnect the power cord from the back of the printer for 10 seconds, reconnect the power cord then turn printer on using power button. 2. Driver does not work after upgrading Operating System from Windows 98, Windows 98SE, or Windows ME to Windows 2000 or Windows XP: On the PhotoSmart CD, look in the CCC folder for a file named HPHuni03.exe. If that file is there, double-click it to execute an advanced uninstall. Once it completes and the PC reboots, Install the PhotoSmart driver from the CD. If the file is not there, please see our web site at "http://www.hp.com/photosmart". 3. After uninstalling another device that uses USB DOT4 I/O (such as an HP OfficeJet G85) the PhotoSmart printer is unusable: It is likely that the PhotoSmart printer had been assigned DOT4_002 and the removal of the previously installed DOT4_001 device has caused this confusion. If your system has locked up, reboot it. Follow these steps based on operating system installed: Windows 2000 or XP: a) Select Start/Settings/Printers b) Right click on the PhotoSmart printer and select Properties c) In the Properties box select the Ports tab d) Click the checkbox for the Dot4 port your device is attached to and assign it. Windows 98 or ME: a) Select Start/Settings/Printers b) Right click on the PhotoSmart printer and select Properties c) In the Properties box select the Ports tab d) Select the DOT4 port in the "Print to the following Port" pulldown box. 4. In certain instances, large files being printed when writing to a card at the same time, may cause the system to become unstable: HP advises avoiding large amounts of disk activity and printing at the same time. 5. After upgrading to these new PhotoSmart drivers from older PhotoSmart drivers, the network printers are now missing: add the network printers back in using Start Menu/Settings/Printers/ Add Printer and selecting "Have Disk" button to browse to the driver disk or network location of the driver for the network device being added. 6. In Windows 2000 When printing to a Hewlett-Packard (HP) multifunction printer (such as the PhotoSmart series) that is attached to a parallel port, CPU utilization may rise to 50-100 percent and remain high. For computers with a single CPU, utilization may reach 100 percent and lock up the computer or generate an svchost.exe error: This is a known Microsoft issue documented on the following URL http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q299/9/56.ASP. Workaround: 1) Start Menu ->Settings ->Control Panel ->Administrative Tools ->Services (Local). 2) Once "Services (Local)" on the left side of the dialog box is selected, browse to "Removable Storage" on the right side of the dialog box and double-click. 3) On the "General" tab, change the "Startup Type" to "Disabled". 7. Installation fails when computer is booted up with two printers attached: This is due to multiple Plug and Play events. To install without failure, disconnect one printer, run the HP PhotoSmart uninstaller. Reboot. Run the HP PhotoSmart Installer one at a time for each printer. 8. PC lost connection with printer during Windows XP Parallel install of P1100: a. Disconnect the power cord from the printer b. Wait 10 seconds c. Reconnect the power cord to the printer d. Wait until the printer has finished starting up e. If the disk icon doesn't automatically appear, double click on the yellow triangle and select the reconnect button. 9. Japanese Windows 98 original release locks up when accessing memory card: upgrade to Windows 98SE. *** HP E-Vectra Notes *** When attempting to install PhotoSmart printer on an HP E-Vectra system that has a retail version of WIndows 98 or Windows 98SE an "Mgsrv32" error appears and ceases the install: This failure only occurs when installing from the CD Rom drive. Chose one of these three workarounds: a) Copy the entire CD Contents to a temporary folder and run Setup from there. You may delete this temporary folder once install is complete. b) Download the web version of the driver and install then run d:\PrintCtr\Setup.exe from the CD. c) Add MinSPs=16 under the [386Enh] section of the System.ini file. *** Memory Card Access Notes *** NTFS File format on cards is not supported. Never pull a memory card out during a read or write access. The result may leave the memory card corrupt and images unreadable. The light next to the memory card slot lights up when a card is inserted and blinks during a read or write access. *** I/O Notes *** It is not recommended that the parallel cable be removed or connected while the PC and printer are powered on. The parallel port needs to be set to ECP mode. Check the BIOS settings as described by the manufacturer of the PC to ensure the LPT port is ECP enabled. If large files are copied to or from the memory card in Windows 98 or Me, there is a possibility that the machine will hang. This will be fixed in a software update. Please see our web site at "http://www.hp.com/photosmart". When the printer is connected via USB or via parallel on Windows 2000 and is working properly, there will be several Dot4 device entries in the Device Manager (for example, Dot4, Dot4Print, Dot4Usb, Dot4 Setup Support). Directing output to an LPT port from a MS DOS or Command Prompt Window is not supported. If this is done, a printer disconnect message will appear. To reconnect and clear the caution "!" icon from the status tray click on the caution "!" icon then click on the "Connect" button within the dialog that appears. *** Parallel Port Notes *** When using Parallel Port connection, the port must be set to ECP mode in the BIOS. Follow your BIOS manufacturers instructions for this setting. *** Infrared (IR) Port Notes *** Cameras: If an image transfer from a camera is stopped immediately after it is initiated, the printer may hang up in the transfer mode. When this occurs the printer continues to display "Connecting" and then "Receiving" after the cancel button has been pressed. To recover normal operation the power to the printer must be turned off then on. Printing from a PC: For more information on configuring the IR port please refer to the computer manufacturer's documentation and please visit our web site at "http://www.hp.com/photosmart". Memory card access is not available through an IR port connection. When printing over IR the caution "!" icon will appear. To print with IR perform a plug and play install using either a parallel or USB connection. Next, change the port setting on the printer properties page found in the Printers folder. To determine the specific port please refer to the manufacturer's documentation or our web site located at "http://www.hp.com/photosmart". *** Application Interactions *** In General: Some applications do not keep changes made to the printer Properties after a print submission. Custom properties may require setup for each print. On-line User's Guide: If the on-line User's Guide will not open from the toolbox or the PhotoSmart Program folder, run the setup.exe program on the CD that came with the printer. Install Adobe's Acrobat Reader from the "Install Bonus Software" menu choice. Adobe PhotoDeluxe Home Edition: When using the Print wizard in the "Get & Fix Photo" mode, the page size for "Print Standard Sizes..." and "Print Multiple on a Page..." is set to the factory default. Choosing a "Standard Photo Print Size" in the Layout step will only place the image within this page size. Changing the page size using "Page Setup..." does not change the layout to fit other selected sizes. To print on media other than the factory default (e.g. print from the phototray) use "Print..." method of the Print wizard and change the media size through "Setup...". Adobe PhotoShop 5.0: If the PC hangs when trying to access printer settings from within the Adobe PhotoShop 5.0 application, use the following work around to make your printer settings outside the application. Click on Start, Settings, Printers and right click on the HP PhotoSmart printer icon to bring up the property page. Make the necessary selections here and close the property page. Return to PhotoShop and click on the print icon or use the File menu to print. Corel Draw 7.0: Drag and drop printing does not work. This is fixed in version 8.0. Microsoft Picture It 2000, Office 97 and Office 2000 products: Files on the memory card cannot be accessed directly by the "Open" dialog file browser. Use drag & drop to copy them from the memory card to a folder on the hard drive first then open them from that folder. Microsoft Publisher 95, 97: Large gradated fills print very slowly. When printing on banner (continuous) paper, the "Overlap Tiles By:" setting is set to 0.25" (7mm) by default. Set this setting to 0.0" (zero inches). To do this, select File/Print/Tile Printing Options. When printing on envelopes, the return address may be clipped. Shift the return address to the right approximately 1" (25mm) from where the return address box shows it should be. Roxio Easy CD Creator 5: Cohabitation issues can exist between Roxio Easy CD Creator 5 and the photosmart drivers on Windows 2000. Please refer to the following hp website for the latest information: http://www.hp.com/cposupport/pc_photography/support_doc/bpy20783.html Roxio patches are available on the Roxio Web Site: http://www.roxio.com . *** Network Installation Notes *** When the printer is connected to a network there is no PC access to the memory cards in the printer and the PC Save does not work. The eMail button on the PhotoSmart 1315 also does not work over a network. Prints can be made from IR or from a memory card in the printer using the printers front panel. Printing is the only function supported over the network. For additional information about network installation please see our web site at "http://www.hp.com/photosmart".Download Driver Pack
