Troubleshooting Notes ------------------------ 1.1 Unable to re-establish connection between PC and printer after printer is turned off using the printer's power button. Solution: Disconnect the power cord from the back of the printer for 10 seconds, reconnect the power cord then turn printer on using power button. If this still doesn't work, disconnect the power cord from the back of the printer, and restart the PC. After the PC has finished booting reconnect the power cord to the printer and power it up. 1.2 Driver does not work after upgrading Operating System from Windows 98, Windows 98SE, or Windows ME to Windows 2000 or Windows XP. Solution: Disconnect the printer. Run the following uninstaller in the Add/Remove Programs control panel: "photosmart 140,240,7200,7600,7700,7900". Reboot, then run the setup.exe program on the CD that came with the printer, and follow the directions. 1.3 After uninstalling another device that uses USB DOT4 I/O (such as an hp OfficeJet G85) the photosmart printer is unusable. Solution: It is likely that the photosmart printer had been assigned DOT4_002 and the removal of the previously installed DOT4_001 device has caused this confusion. If your system has locked up, reboot it. Follow these steps based on operating system installed: Windows 2000 or XP: a) Select Start/Settings/Printers b) Right click on the photosmart printer and select Properties c) In the Properties page select the Ports tab d) Click the checkbox for the Dot4 port your device is attached to and assign it. Windows 98 or ME: a) Select Start/Settings/Printers b) Right click on the photosmart printer and select Properties c) In the Properties page select the Ports tab d) Select the DOT4 port in the "Print to the following Port" pulldown box. 1.4 In certain instances, large files being printed when writing to a card at the same time, may cause the system to become unstable: Solution: hp advises avoiding printing and accessing the memory card's drive letter at the same time. 1.5 Installation fails when computer is booted up with two printers attached. Solution: This is due to multiple Plug and Play events. To install without failure, first disconnect both printers. Then run the following uninstaller in the Add/Remove Programs control panel: "Photosmart 140,240,7200,7600,7700,7900". Reboot your system. Reinstall the printer software by running the setup.exe program on the CD that came with the printer. When prompted to attach a printer, attach only one printer. Only after installation of has completed, attach the second printer. The second printer will install automatically. 1.6 After uninstalling a photosmart 100, P1000, P1100, 1115, 1215, 1218, or 1315, your photosmart 140, 240, 7200, 7600, 7700, or 7900 series printer no longer works. Solution: Uninstall the driver for the 140, 240, 7200, 7600, 7700, or 7900 series printer, then reinstall it again. To avoid problems in the future, uninstall the 100, P1000, P1100, 1115, 1215, 1218, or 1318 driver through the "Add/Remove Programs" control panel, instead of through the CD. 1.7 After uninstalling a photosmart 130, 230, 7150, 7345, 7350, or 7550, your photosmart 140, 240, 7200, 7600, 7700, or 7900 series printer no longer works. Solution: Uninstall the driver for the 140, 240, 7200, 7600, 7700, or 7900 series printer, then reinstall it again. To avoid problems in the future, uninstall the 130, 230, 7150, 7345, 7350, or 7550 driver through the "Add/Remove Programs" control panel, instead of through the CD. 1.8 Printer driver fails to install when an In-System Design PAKit drive is already installed on the PC: Solution: Uninstall the PAKit, install the printer, and then reinstall the PAKit drive. 1.9 The installation process pauses and appears to have stopped, but the PC is still showing drive activity. Solution: In rare cases, the installer needs to search for and update certain modules on the system, and this may take up to 10 minutes. When the module is found, the installer will finish the update. 1.10 In Windows 98 and Windows 98 SE, the printer sometimes disconnects and will not reconnect when you bring the system out of Standby mode. Solution: Reboot the computer, and the printer should reconnect. 1.11 When printing more than one image on the same page, and "Borderless Auto Fit" is selected in the printer properties, some of the images appear to be cut off. Solution: Do no use "Borderless Auto fit" when printing more than one image per page. It is intended to be used only for printing a single image. 1.12 Watermark text appears corrupted in some languages. Solution: In the Watermark settings in the printer properties, change the font from "Arial" to any other valid font. 1.13 Services Tab (Toolbox) missing in Windows 98/98SE/ME when accessing printer properties from "Start->Settings->Printers->Properties". Solution: To access the services tab, open printer properties by right clicking the printer tray icon and selecting "Open hp photosmart series Toolbox". 1.14 A Windows XP computer becomes unstable after turning off a connected printer while the printer is reporting that it is out of paper. Solution: Install Windows XP Service Pack 1 if it is not already installed. Install the Microsoft Windows patch located on the installation CD at the following location: "\util\ccc\enu\Q818966_WXP_SP2_x86_ENU.exe" 1.15 In Windows 98/98SE/ME, when installing a second photosmart printer immediately after installing the first, the tray card icon doesn't appear for the second printer. Solution: Reboot the computer. 1.16 Printed image is not mirrored when the paper type is set to "hp iron-on transfer" in the printer properties. Solution: Load the "Photo & Imaging Director" from the Windows Start menu, select "View & Print", select the image, then click "Image Editor" in the toolbar. In the Image Editor menu, select "Image->Flip Right to Left", click "Save As", and save the image to a new file name. Load this new image in the application which you are printing from. 1.17 If an install fails or is canceled before it is completed, then subsequent installations are unsuccessful as well. Solution: Unplug the printer. Uninstall the driver. Remove and re-insert the CD. If the installation doesn't start automatically, run Setup.exe on the CD. Don't plug in the printer until prompted by setup. 2. hp E-Vectra Notes -------------------- When attempting to install photosmart printer on an hp E-Vectra system that has a retail version of Windows 98 or Windows 98SE a "Mgsrv32" error appears and ceases the install: This failure only occurs when installing from the CD-ROM drive. Choose one of these three workarounds: a) Copy the entire CD Contents to a temporary folder and run Setup from there. You may delete this temporary folder once install is complete. b) Download the driver from the web at "http://www.hp.com/cposupport/loc/regional.html", install the downloaded driver, and then run Setup.exe in the "DigitImg" folder on the CD that came with your printer. c) Add MinSPs=16 under the [386Enh] section of the System.ini file. 3. Memory Card Access Notes --------------------------- The NTFS File system (available in Windows 2K, XP) is not supported on memory cards. Do not attempt to format a memory card with the NTFS file system. Never pull a memory card out during a read or write access. The result may leave the memory card corrupt and images unreadable. The light next to the memory card slot lights up when a card is inserted and blinks during a read or write access. In order to safely remove the memory card, right-click the card icon in the system tray and select "Prepare to remove card", and wait for the memory card light to stop blinking. The front port of the 7200, 7600, 7700, and 7900 series printers do not support access to memory cards from the computer and are for printing only. Because of this, a memory card icon will not appear in the system tray. On a 7200 series printer, the PC will not display "Out of Paper" and other messages. 4. I/O Notes ------------ When the printer is connected and is working properly, there will be several Dot4 device entries in the Device Manager (for example, Dot4, Dot4Print, Dot4Usb, Dot4 Setup Support). 5. Application Interactions --------------------------- In General: Some applications do not keep changes made to the Printer Properties after a print submission. Custom properties may require setup for each print. Adobe PhotoDeluxe Home Edition: When using the Print wizard in the "Get & Fix Photo" mode, the page size for "Print Standard Sizes..." and "Print Multiple on a Page..." is set to the factory default. Choosing a "Standard Photo Print Size" in the Layout step will only place the image within this page size. Changing the page size using "Page Setup..." does not change the layout to fit other selected sizes. To print on media other than the factory default (e.g. print from the phototray) use "Print..." method of the Print wizard and change the media size through "Setup...". Adobe Photoshop 5.0 and 6.0: If you experience disconnection problems when printing from Photoshop, lower the physical memory used by Photoshop until the problem is no longer experienced. To get to the setting in Photoshop 5.0 select "File/Preferences/Memory & Image Cache" from the menu. To get to the setting in Photoshop 6.0 select "Edit/Preferences/Memory & Image Cache" from the menu. Corel Draw 7.0: Drag and drop printing does not work. This is fixed in version 8.0. Microsoft Publisher 95, 97: Large gradated fills print very slowly. When printing on banner (continuous) paper, the "Overlap Tiles By:" setting is set to 0.25" (7mm) by default. Set this setting to 0.0" (zero inches). To do this, select "File/Print/Tile Printing Options" from the menu. When printing on envelopes, the return address may be clipped. Shift the return address to the right approximately 1" (25mm) from where the return address box shows it should be. Roxio Easy CD Creator 5: Issues can occur when running Roxio Easy CD Creator 5 and the photosmart drivers at the same time on Windows 2000 and Windows XP. Update Easy CD Creator with a patch retrieved from: "http://www.roxio.com/en/support/ecdc/software_updatesv5.jhtml" AOL 5.0 and higher When printing from the AOL image viewer, the output is corrupted. Please save the image to the computer and print from another application such as HP Photo Printing. 6. Network Installation Notes ----------------------------- When the printer is connected to a network there is no PC access to the memory cards in the printer and the PC Save button does not work. The E-mail button on the photosmart 7550 also does not work over a network. Prints can be made from a memory card in the printer using the printer's front panel. Printing is the only function supported over the network. For additional information about network installation please see our web site at "http://www.hp.com/cposupport/loc/regional.html".Download Driver Pack
