Introduction
============
NetSpot Console is network software that enables you to manage devices
connected to the network from your web browser. NetSpot Console offers device
information for supported devices in one convenient list. Alternatively, you
can switch to a customized floor plan version of the device map.
Selecting the device you wish to manage from the list or its icon on the map
gives you detailed information about that device. From this page, you can
display current device status information and make a variety of settings for
the device.
This README.TXT file contains the latest information and important notes about
"NetSpot Console". Please review this before using this software.

* When using NetSpot Console with Internet Explorer under Windows, if
  a version older than Microsoft VM (Microsoft Virtual Machine) build 3309 is
  installed, the device map may not be displayed properly.
  Please install the latest version of Microsoft VM. It is available for
  download on the Microsoft Corporation Web site.

  - Microsoft VM is not a standard feature of Windows XP. Please install the
    latest version of Microsoft VM.

  - In order to confirm the build number of Microsoft VM, enter "jview" at the
    DOS command prompt and press the [Enter] key. The last 4 digits of the
    version number appearing on the first line are the Microsoft VM build
    number.

* When using NetSpot Console in a NetWare environment, use of Novell Client
  as the protocol stack is recommended. Please note that the following
  limitations apply when using NetWare client software other than Novell
  Client.

  - In order to specify the print server, file server, NDS tree, context and
    volume with NetSpot Console, you must input their names into text boxes.
    (When using Novell Client, you can select them from a list.)

  - You cannot use NetWare's log-in/log-out function, or its object (print
    server, printer, queue) creation functions.

  - You cannot search for devices registered in the SAP table.

* Please note that the following limitations apply when using NetSpot Console
  with the Macintosh version of Internet Explorer.

  - You cannot use NetWare's log-in/log-out function, or its object (print
    server, printer, queue) creation functions even when the protocol stack of
    the computer where NetSpot Console is installed is Novell Client.

  - When using NetWare 3.2, the print server and file server do not appear on
    lists. You must input their names into text boxes to specify them.

  - The device map function is not available.

* You cannot use the following functions when using NetSpot Console with
  Netscape 6 or 7. (However, if the Java 2 module was installed together with
  Netscape 7, you can use them all.)

  - NetWare's log-in function

  - The device map function

  - The browser notification function

* A troubleshooting guide for some models is provided in PDF. To view this
  information, please install Adobe Acrobat Reader.

Installing NetSpot Console
===========================
1. Before Installation

   * Install NetSpot Console into one computer in your network. (It does not
     need to be installed into any other computer.)

   * If a previous version of NetSpot Console is already installed and you
     install this version of NetSpot Console without deleting the previous
     version, you can continue to use previous version's system preferences.
     (However, it is not possible to install a previous version of NetSpot
     Console without first deleting this version.)

   * Before upgrading from the previous version, please clear the browser
     cache on all computers. The online manual and help pages may not display
     properly unless the cache is cleared.

   * When upgrading a version of NetSpot Console older than ver. 2.30, if you
     are using any of the following software applications at the computer
     where you want to install NetSpot Console, close them before installing
     NetSpot Console.
       - NetSpot Job Monitor
       - NetSpot Resource Downloader

   * With Windows NT/2000/XP/Server 2003 log on as an Administrator to install
     NetSpot Console.

   * If NetSpot Console is installed into the NT file system (NTFS) drive,
     the NTFS directory access rights must be properly set. (As the default
     setting, full control rights are given to everyone. It is not necessary
     to change this setting.)


2. Installing NetSpot Console

  1. Run SETUP.EXE from the NetSpot_Console folder on the computer where you
     want to install NetSpot Console.
       The Installshield Wizard starts.

     * Selecting [Custom] as the setup type during installation allows you to
       install just the device functions that you want to manage with NetSpot
       Console. The procedure is as follows.

       1. Run the same version of the installer (SETUP.EXE), or select
          [Settings]-[Control Panel] on the [Start] menu and click the
          [Add/Remove] button (the [Change] button with Windows 2000/XP
          /Server 2003) in the [Add/Remove Programs] to display the NetSpot
          Console-Installshield Wizard.

       2. Select [Modify] in the NetSpot Console - Installshield Wizard
          [Program Maintenance] window and select the device function or
          functions you want to install.

  2. Proceed according to the instructions on the screen that appears.

       During installation, set the HTTP port to NetSpot Console Web Server.
       Be sure to set a port number that does not conflict with other
       applications.

       * You can change the port number from NetSpot Console after installing
         the software.

       * If the port number conflicts with that of another application,
         accessing the NetSpot Console web server from a web browser may not
         be possible. To resolve this problem, use NetSpot Console Manager or
         the command line to change the port number.
         To change the port number with NetSpot Console Manager, refer to the
         User's Guide (PDF). To change the port number using the command line,
         go the folder where NetSpot Console is installed and input as shown
         below. ("wnwebsrv.exe" is in the folder where NetSpot Console is
         installed.)

          >wnwebsrv.exe -port <new port number>

         Example:
          >wnwebsrv.exe -port 8008

  3. When the Troubleshooting Guide installer is in the NetSpot_Console
     folder, a dialog box asking if you want to install the Troubleshooting
     Guide appears after installing NetSpot Console. To use the
     Troubleshooting Guide, install it at this stage.

     If the Troubleshooting Guide installer is not included in NetSpot_Console
     folder, the installation finishes at step 2. Continue to step 4.

     * The Troubleshooting Guide describes how to resolve basic problems,
       such as paper jams and changing toner cartridges, that frequently occur
       during printer operation.

     * If devices are specified for control using NetSpot Console at the time
       of installing NetSpot Console, only the Troubleshooting Guide
       components for those devices are installed.

     * You can also install the Troubleshooting Guide at a later time.
       Further, once installed, you can add or delete the Troubleshooting
       Guide components for individual devices. For more information, refer to
       User's Guide (PDF).

     * The Troubleshooting Guide for some models is provided in PDF. To view
       this information, please install Adobe Acrobat Reader into a client
       computer.

  4. Configure Novell Client, if you are using it with NetSpot Console in a
     NetWare environment.

       Configure the Novell NetWare Client in the computer where  NetSpot
       Console is installed (configuration in each PC is unnecessary). Set the
       following settings depending on the system you are using:

      * Windows XP
        - If [Typical Installation] was selected when installing Novell
          Client:
          No setting required.

        - If [Custom Installation] was selected when installing Novell Client:
          Set the following based on the [Select a network protocol option for
          the client to use] setting.

          [IP and IPX] or [IPX]
          No setting required.

          [IP only]
          Install [Service Advertising Protocol] in the network connection
          properties.

          [IP with IPX Compatibility]
          If this was set when Novell Client was installed, NetSpot Console's
          NetWare function is not available.

      * Windows 2000

        - If [Typical Installation] was selected when installing Novell
          Client:
          Set [Preferred Network Protocol] on the [Protocol Preferences] page
          in the Novell Client properties to [IPX].

        - If [Custom Installation] was selected when installing Novell Client:
          Set the following based on the [Select a network protocol option for
          the client to use] setting.

          [IP and IPX] or [IPX]
          Set [Preferred Network Protocol] on the [Protocol Preferences] page
          in the Novell Client properties to [IPX].

          [IP only]
          Install [SAP Agent] in the network connection properties.
          Next, set [Preferred Network Protocol] on the [Protocol Preferences]
          page in the Novell Client properties to [IPX].

          [IP with IPX Compatibility]
          No setting required.

      * Windows NT

        - If [Typical Installation] was selected when installing Novell
          Client:
          Set [Preferred Network Protocol] on the [Protocol Preferences] page
          in the Novell Client properties to [IPX].

        - If [Custom Installation] was selected when installing Novell Client:
          Set the following based on the [Select a network protocol option for
          the client to use] setting.

          [IP and IPX]
          Set [Preferred Network Protocol] on the [Protocol Preferences] page
          in the Novell Client properties to [IPX].

          [IPX]
          No setting required.

          [IP only] or [IP with IPX Compatibility]
          If one of these was set when Novell Client was installed, NetSpot
          Console will be unable to display the NetWare server name and
          similar.

      * Windows 98

        - If [Typical Installation] was selected when installing Novell
          Client:
          No setting required.

        - If [Custom Installation] was selected when installing Novell Client:
          Set the following based on the [Select a network protocol option for
          the client to use] setting.

          [IP and IPX] or [IPX]
          No setting required.

          [IP only] or [IP with IPX Compatibility]
          If one of these was set when Novell Client was installed, NetSpot
          Console will be unable to display the NetWare server name and
          similar.

  This completes the installation of NetSpot Console.

Using NetSpot Console
=====================
After you install NetSpot Console on one computer in your network, you can use
NetSpot Console from all computers that can communicate using HTTP protocol,
by following the procedure below.

1. Start your Web browser.

2. Input the URL below into [Address] or [Location].

    http://<server host name>:<HTTP port number>/nsc/index.html

   Example:
    http://nsc_server:8080/nsc/index.html

   * An Internet shortcut for NetSpot Console appears in the [Start] menu of
     the computer where it is installed.
     To access NetSpot Console, point to [Programs] on the [Start] menu, then
     point to [NetSpot Console] and select [NetSpot Console].

help pages.

Online Manual:
The various functions and operating procedures for NetSpot Console as well
as an overview of the software are described here. Please read through it
before you use NetSpot Console.
To display the online manual, start NetSpot Console, and click the [Online
Manual] button found on the left.

Help:
This displays an explanation for the currently displayed screen. Please read
this if there are items on the displayed screen that you do not understand.
To display Help, start NetSpot Console and click the [?] button in the upper
right of the screen that you don't fully understand, whenever necessary.

Uninstalling NetSpot Console
============================
1. Point to [Settings] on the [Start] menu of the computer where NetSpot
   Console is installed, then select [Control Panel].
     The Control Panel appears.

2. Double-click the [Add/Remove Programs] icon ([Add or Remove Programs] with
   Windows XP).

3. Select NetSpot Console from the list and click the [Add/Remove] button.
   (For Windows 2000/XP/Server 2003, click the [Remove] button.)
      This uninstalls NetSpot Console.

   * You can uninstall individual device functions. The procedure is as
     follows.

     1. Run the same version of the installer (SETUP.EXE), or select
        [Settings]-[Control Panel] on the [Start] menu and click the
        [Add/Remove] button (the [Change] button with Windows 2000/XP
        /Server 2003) in the [Add/ Remove Programs] to display the NetSpot
        Console-Installshield Wizard.

     2. Select [Modify] in the NetSpot Console - Installshield Wizard [Program
        Maintenance] window and select the device function or functions you
        want to uninstall.

Important Release Notes
=======================
1. General Notes

  (1) To allow NetSpot Console to use cookies, set your web browser cookie
      setting to enable.

  (2) When deleting devices from [Display Devices] in [Add/Edit Device Group]
      page in [Device Group Settings], deleting some devices at the same time
      may cause an application error. To prevent this, delete devices one at a
      time.

  (3) If both the NetSpot Console and NetSpot Console Web services are not
      running on the computer where NetSpot Console is installed, NetSpot
      Console is not available. In this case, start these services by using
      NetSpot Console Manager on the computer where NetSpot Console is
      installed. To access NetSpot Console Manager, point to [Programs] on the
      [Start] menu, then point to [NetSpot Console] and select [NetSpot
      Console Manager].

  (4) When anti-virus software is running on the computer where NetSpot
      Console is installed, if you stop the NetSpot Console service
      immediately after changing settings in the various settings pages, the
      settings may not take effect. If you need to stop this service after
      changing settings, wait for a few minutes first.

  (5) Please note that the following limitation applies when using NetSpot
      Console with Netscape 4.x.

      * Device maps whose sizes are over 1024 * 1024 pixels cannot display
        properly on the [Device] page. In this case, reselect a map whose size
        is smaller than 1024 * 1024 pixels or select the list view on the
        [Device] page.

      * If you make to open the device map or background image whose size is
        over 1024 * 1024 pixels (total 1048576 pixels) on the
        [Edit Device Map] or [Add Device Map] page, you cannot carry on the
        next procedure. In this case, close the [Edit Device Map] or [Add
        Device Map] window once and edit or add the map again.

  (6) The value shown in [Number of Total Printed Pages] in the [Device] page
      (list display) may differ from the  actual value.

  (7) If the page does not display properly in Internet Explorer on Windows
      Server 2003, change the security settings as follows.

      In the Internet Explorer [Tools] menu, select [Internet Options]. On the
      [Security] sheet, perform one of the following:
      - Click the zone to which the NetSpot Console web site belongs
        ([Internet] or [Local intranet]), and set the security level to
        [Medium] or lower.
      - Click [Trusted sites] and set the security level to [Medium] or lower
        (the  default level is [Medium]). Then click the [Sites] button, and
        add the URL for NetSpot Console to the Trusted sites zone.


  (8) When you select the send function as a filter condition in the [Device]
      page, the following models are not shown in the page even though they
      have the send function.

        imageRUNNER 5000i
        imageRUNNER 3300i
        imageRUNNER 2010F
        imageRUNNER 2000/1600
        iR3250
        LASER CLASS 700 series

      Concerning iR105/iR8500/iR7200 having the send function, depending on
      their firmware version, they may be not shown in the page even though
      they have the send function.


2. Notes for NetSpot Console installation procedure

  (1) Depending on your environment, the installer displays the dialog boxes
      that note that read only files are detected. This is a normal part of
      the installation procedure, please select Yes to overwrite the files.

How To Update Drivers Manually

After your driver has been downloaded, follow these simple steps to install it.

  • Expand the archive file (if the download file is in zip or rar format).

  • If the expanded file has an .exe extension, double click it and follow the installation instructions.

  • Otherwise, open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start menu and selecting Device Manager.

  • Find the device and model you want to update in the device list.

  • Double-click on it to open the Properties dialog box.

  • From the Properties dialog box, select the Driver tab.

  • Click the Update Driver button, then follow the instructions.

Very important: You must reboot your system to ensure that any driver updates have taken effect.
