1. ECARD or CARD2 Configuration Problems
========================================

 The supplied configuration program, ECARD.EXE, should recognise the host
 PCMCIA controller and any PCMCIA software that has been loaded. If ECARD
 cannot configure the PCMCIA system in an NE2000 compatible mode you will
 receive an error message.

 ECARD will recognise and configure the following controllers:

 Intel 82365SL (and compatibles Cirrus, Vadem, VLSI, Ricoh, IBM Stinger,
		Texas Instruments etc.)
 Databook TCIC
 IBM ThinkPad
 Sharp
 Toshiba

 In addition, CARD2 will recognise the PCI-PCMCIA controllers from

 Cirrus  CL-PD6729
 Intel   PPEC 82092AA
 Vadem   VG-469

		 Card Services
		 =============
 If ECARD or CARD2 finds that you have card services loaded on your PC it
 will not be able to install. For this kind of installation you can either
 remove the card services files (see later for the names of these files) and
 use ECARD or CARD2 or keep the card services and use the card servics client
 program called ECARDCS.

 This file details known problems with the Ethernet PCMCIA card in
 certain configurations and PC's. Please contact the address at the end of
 this file if you are experiencing a problem other than those listed below.

2. Card Services Installations
================================

 ECARDCS is a card services client program which will hook into card services
 and enable the card when it is inserted.

 ECARDCS should be loaded after the card services program and in some cases
 after other specific files have been loaded too.

 Usage is usually
	ECARDCS.EXE /IO 300 /IRQ 3

 in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file or
	DEVICE=C:\PATH\ECARDCS.EXE /IO 300 /IRQ 3

 in the CONFIG.SYS file. Other options for IRQ are 4, 5, 7, 9, 10, 11 and 15.
 Options for IO are 320, 340 and 360.

 The following file names are card services programs which may be found in
 either the CONFIG.SYS or AUTOEXEC.BAT:

3. ECARDCS Installation
=======================

 When the Ethernet card is inserted ECARDCS will attempt to configure it. If
 ECARDCS is successful you will hear a single tone beep. If you hear two
 single tone beeps ECARDCS may not have been able to configure the Ethernet
 card.

 In this case try to use different IRQ and IO settings until a satisfactory
 combination is acheived.

 Try ECARDCS.EXE /IRQ 3 /IO 340
 or  ECARDCS.EXE /IRQ 5 /IO 300

 Valid options are IO = 300, 320, 340 and 360
	      and IRQ = 3, 4, 5, 7, 9, 10, 11 and 15.

4. ECARDCS Configuration Problems
=================================
 If you hear two single tone beeps ECARDCS may not have been able to
 configure the Ethernet PC card. There are two diagnostic programs included
 on this disk

 If ECARDCS.EXE installs the card but your NE2ODI.COM or NE2000.COM driver
 reports "Buffer RAM failed the memory test" the you are probably using a
 Cirrus Logic PCMCIA controller. Please either use CARD2CS.EXE from this
 \DIAGNOSE\ directory in place of ECARDCS.EXE or follow th instructions
 below on using the Cirrus Logic timing fix program CIRRPTCH.COM.

 ASK-CS.EXE - after loading ECARDCS, insert the Ethernet PCMCIA card and
   run ASK-CS. This will give you all the configuration information to do
   with ECARDCS and your PCMCIA software.

 If you use the alteernative driver to ECARDCS.EXE called CARD2CS.EXE then
 use ASK-CS2.EXE to find out what CARD2CS.EXE has done.

4.1   Using CIRRPTCH.COM
========================

  If the Ethernet PC card can be recongnised and enabled by ECARDCS.EXE
  but the network driver fails to load with the error message
	    "Buffer RAM failed the memory test"
  or once logged on to your server the network connection is unreliable
  and your PC is using a Cirrus Logic PCMCIA controller (use CARDCHEK.EXE
  to check) then you need to run the CIRRPTCH.COM patch program to correct
  the Cirrus timing problem.

  This is due to timing problem with a particular revision of the
  Cirrus Logic PCMCIA Controller inside certain notebook PCs.

  Notebooks which might be affected by this problem:
  * Some Compaq's
  * Digital HiNote
  * PANASONIC CF-41

  Procedure:

  1. Use CARDCHEK.EXE to identify the PCMCIA Controller inside your
     notebook.	If it's not a Cirrus Logic controller, then the problem is
     somewhere else.

  2. Copy CIRRPTCH.COM onto Drive C:

  3. Add CIRRPTCH.COM in the first lines of your AUTOEXEC.BAT.

  4. Reboot your PC

5. Altering the Card Services Generic Clients
=============================================

 This section shows you how to modify card services generic clients to get
 them to automatically recognise and configure the Grey Cell Systems
 Ethernet PCMCIA card. This is not usually recommended as the
 procedures are not very straight forward and using ECARDCS.EXE is a more
 flexible alternative.

 ***************************
 * Award Cardware Software *
 ***************************
 PCMCIA software from Award comes in the form of 3 files called PCSS, PCCS and
 PCENABLE. These are usually placed in the PC's CONFIG.SYS file for
 installation on boot-up.

 If these files are dated before 1/7/93, Ethernet PC card should
 automatically be detected and set up. If these files are dated after 1/7/93
 then the card needs to be configured using the Card Registration Program.

 You will need to run the 'PC Card Control for Windows' program under Windows.
 If you do not have Windows, edit the CARDWARE.INI file as indicated at the
 end of this section.

 Make sure the Ethernet PC card is inserted into one of your PC's sockets.
 Then -
  1) Run 'PC Card Control for Windows' from the Cardware sub-directory.
  2) Press 'OK' buttons on any card detect errors until you get to the main
     menu.
  3) Select the 'Cards' option and choose 'Edit'.
  4) Select Socket A (or wherever the Ethernet card is located) and press
     Enter

  If you already have a device in the Defined box called GCS2000, go to step
  (11).

  5) Select 'New Device' under the 'Defined' devices box.
  6) Edit the new device to be named 'GCS2000' ('GCS2200' if you have the
     extended, Ethernet PC card).

  7) Select IO range 1 Base(Hex) = 300, Length = 32.
  8) Do not alter Mem range 1 or 2.
  9) Select IRQ level 3. And OK to make changes.
 10) Back on the 'Edit card' screen, highlight the 'GCS2000' device in the
     defined devices box.
 11) Transfer the GCS2000 to the 'Associated' box with the 'Include' command.
 12) Select OK to complete editting and return to main screen.
 13) If the Ethernet PC card is not graphically depicted, choose 'Card'
     and 'Reconfigure' the socket which contains the Ethernet card.

 If the card is still not configured exit Windows and check the CARDWARE.INI
 file in the CARDWARE sub-directory has had the following changes made:

 [Cards]
 NumberOfRecords=1
 1=Grey Cell GCS2000, 13, 6, -1,Grey Cell,GCS2000
 or
 1=Grey Cell GCS2220, 13, 6, -1,Grey Cell,GCS2220

 [SpecificAssociations]
 NumberOfRecords=1
 1=6

 [LogicalDevices]
 NumberOfRecords=6
 .
 6=GCS2000, 0X0, 0X0, 0X300, 0X20, 0X3, 0X0, 0X0, 0X1, 0X0, 0X0, 0X0

 Note that the 'NumberOfxxx' numbers may vary from those shown here.
 Ensure also that the 'resources' section in the CardWare.ini file has
 requested the system resources for the Ethernet PC card. This should include
 the line as follows:

 [Resources]
 .
 I/O=0X300,0X20,E,10
 .
 Then whenever you insert the Ethernet card it will automatically be
 configured by the Award software.

 If you still have problems with CARDWARE software try replacing your
 CARDWARE.INI file with the one supplied on the PCMCIA card Drivers Disk.

 There should also be an editor file to add new cards to your system. This
 editor is called SCDEDIT.EXE and will either be in your PCMPLUS sub-
 directory or on the Phoenix installation disk. If you do not have it contact
 your PC dealer.

 To configure the Ethernet PC card run the SCDEDIT.EXE program and follow
 these steps:
  1) On the card list, select NEW CARD,
  2) Set IO window A and IRQ to 'Yes', leave other options on 'No'.
  3) Select F10 to Edit Parameters.
  4) Enter 'Grey Cell' at 'ID1:' option (must be correct case).
  5) Enter 'GCS2000' at 'ID2:' option (must be correct case).
  6) Set the 'Option Reg' to 20.
  7) Set the IO Port A: to 300.
  8) Set the IO Size A: to 32.
  9) Toggle the IO path size to be 16 bit.
 10) Set Card IRQ to 3.
 11) Save settings (F10) and then exit.

 Re-boot your PC to effect the changes and then whenever you insert the
 Ethernet PC card it will automatically be configured.

 * SystemSoft's CardSoft Software *
 **********************************
 (Compaq Utilities)

 SystemSoft is a supplier of PCMCIA software for a range of notebook PC's.
 These include ACER, Artdex, AST, Chicony, Compaq, Dell, NEC, Hewlett Packard and
 Toshiba. SystemSoft card enabler software consists of socket services,
 card services, a system resource allocation program and a card identification
 and configuration program. The latter program (CARDID.EXE) identifies cards
 from a library of known PCMCIA cards. If the card is not recognised it will
 not be able to configure it.

 Compaq supplies these utilities on its Elite notebook range in a directory
 called "CPQDOS".

 On the PCMCIA drivers disk there is a preconfigured library file to be used
 with the SystemSoft CARDID program. This needs to be included in the
 libraries section of the CARDID.INI file, as shown below:

[Libraries]
CardLib=greycell.clb
CardLib=cardid.clb

 The Ethernet PC card library is called GREYCELL.CLB. This file will only
 configure the PC card on IRQ 3 and IO 300. For other settings please use
 the ECARDCS program with /IRQ and /IO options.

 Make sure your CARDID.INI also has the following lines:

Lan1Port=300
Lan1IRQ=3
Lan1MemoryBase1=0
Lan1MemoryBase2=0

 for Ethernet LAN configuration. A sample CARDID.INI file is included in the
 PC card PCMCIA drivers disk. If you require another IRQ try modifying
 Lan1IRQ=5 or Lan1IRQ=9 etc.

6. Specific PC Problems
=======================

 This section details known problems with specific machines.

 *********************
 * Toshiba - General *
 *********************
 The Toshiba range of portables usually reserves IRQ 3 for its own tracker
 ball usage. Use IRQ 5 for Toshiba machines.

 ****************************
 * Toshiba - T3300 Machines *
 ****************************
 The Toshiba T3300 PC uses Toshiba's own PCMCIA controller design. This is no
 longer supported by Toshiba. The controller will not allow the Ethernet PC
 card to run in NE2000 mode. Hence, it will not support standard NE2000
 drivers. However, on the driver's disk there is a T3300 sub-directory which
 contains an ODI and an IPX driver for Novell NetWare and other networks that
 require an ODI interface. The only missing driver is the NDIS driver which
 is not yet available. If you have this machine and require an NDIS driver,
 please contact a member of the technical support group at the address below.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

  ****************************
 * Toshiba - Topic Software *
 ****************************
 Toshiba first launched notebooks equipped with PCMCIA sockets and some
 software to recognise cards which are inserted into the machine. This
 software will not configure the PC card. We suggest taking the TOPIC.SYS
 file out of the CONFIG.SYS file, or requesting an upgrade from your Toshiba
 dealer.

 ******************************************************
 * Zenith Data Systems Notebooks - ECARD Memory Areas *
 ******************************************************

 Note: This modification only applies if using ECARD.

 The Zenith Data Systems Z-Note objects to allocating the memory
 area D800-D8FF for use by other programs. This area of memory should not be
 used for the PC card. Instead the memory area C800-C8FF should be excluded
 from the EMM386 with the line
	device=c:\path\EMM386.EXE x=C800-C8FF

 in the CONFIG.SYS.

 Then ECARD should be run with the memory switch set to C8 with the following
 line:
	ECARD.EXE /MEM C8

 The NE2000 driver should then be loaded as usual.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

 ************************
 * Sharp - Memory Areas *
 ************************

 Note: This modification only applies if using ECARD.

 The Sharp 8650 (and maybe other models too) objects to allocating the memory
 area D800-D8FF for use by other programs. This area of memory should not be
 used for the PC card. Instead the memory area C800-C8FF should be excluded
 from the EMM386 with the line
	device=c:\path\EMM386.EXE x=C800-C8FF

 in the CONFIG.SYS.

 Then ECARD should be run with the memory switch set to C8 with the following
 line:
	ECARD.EXE /MEM C8

 The NE2000 driver should then be loaded as usual.

 **************************************
 * Dell Notebooks and PCMCIA Software *
 **************************************

 If using the Award software, follow the installation steps shown as per
 Toshiba / Award in this guide. The Dell notebooks do not like other software
 to take certain memory areas. Avoid conflicts by editting the CARDWARE.INI
 file at the following location:

 [Resources]
 ;MEM=0xCF000,0x1000,E (i.e. add a semi-colon at the beginning of line)

 If using the Phoenix software, avoid a similar conflict by editting the
 CONFIG.SYS to ensure the PCMCS.EXE file takes memory from D0 and not CF,
 which is the default. This is done by replacing the /ADDR=CF parameter
 with /ADDR=D0.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

 *******************************************************
 * Motorola Controller - JetBook and Hyundai Notebooks *
 *******************************************************
 The host PCMCIA controller in the JetBook and Hyundai notebooks is a
 Motorola LapKat special variant. ECARD cannot configure the controller
 directly. You must have a version of socket or card services available
 which will force the LapKat to run in 16 bit mode. At present we have only
 found software to run the LapKat in 8 bit mode.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

 *********************
 * Twinhead Slimnote *
 *********************
 The Twinhead Slimnote objects to allocating the memory area D800-D8FF for
 use by other programs. This area of memory should not be used for the PC
 card. Instead the memory area C800-C8FF should be excluded from the EMM386
 with the line
	device=c:\path\EMM386.EXE x=C800-C8FF

 in the CONFIG.SYS.

 Then ECARD should be run with the memory switch set to C8 with the following
 line:
	ECARD.EXE /MEM C8

 The NE2000 driver should then be loaded as usual.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
 ********************************
 * Texas Instruments TravelMate *
 ********************************
 The Texas Instruments TravelMate with a docking station does not have many
 free resources for PCMCIA usage.

 If using this machine you will be restricted to the following resources:

 IO 320 only.
 IRQ 3, 5, 10 or 11
 MEM C800 only.

 This area of memory should not be used for the PC card. The memory area
 C800-C8FF should be excluded from the EMM386 with the line
	device=c:\path\EMM386.EXE x=C800-C8FF

 in the CONFIG.SYS.

 Then ECARD should be run with the memory switch set to C8 with the following
 line:
	ECARD.EXE /MEM=C8 /IO=340 /IRQ=5

 or ECARDCS.EXE
	ECARDCS.EXE /IO=340 /IRQ=5

 The NE2000 driver should then be loaded as usual.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
 *****************
 * Dell Latitude *
 *****************
 The Dell Latitude notebook has a power saving feature that can switch off
 the PCMCIA sockets. If you experience any problems with locating and/or
 configuring your PCMCIA cards run the set up utlity by pressing

     CTRL-ALT-ENTER

 together.

 Then make sure that the
	"Upper PC Card Socket" and the
	"Lower PC Card Socket" are both set to on.
