NOTES ON SETUP ***************************************************************************** IMPORTANT: If you have Windows 95, Windows NT or OS/2 please consult the route map and the main user manual, and follow the instructions for installing the PC Card. First insert the Series 3400 PC card into one of the free PCMCIA card slots, remove all other PCMCIA cards from your machine. If your target operating system is DOS, Windows 3.1 and/or Windows 3.11 insert the "3400 Series Drivers Disk" into drive A, and type A:INSTALL at the DOS command prompt. The Installation program will detect the type of hardware in your PC and modify your CONFIG.SYS automatically. Then reboot the machine to enable the 3400 Series PC card. We have provided a simple to use "Express Set Up" at the beginning of the main User's Manual This provides the most up-to-date information on the installation of all popular networks. If your network is not listed here, please contact your network supplier or Grey Cell for assistance. ***************************************************************************** 2. Installing the PCMCIA Software manually ***************************************************************************** When using the 3400 Series PC card you have 3 installation options: 1) Use card and socket services with CARD2CS and standard NE2000 drivers. 2) Use the direct enabler CARD2.EXE and standard NE2000 drivers. 3) Use the GCS3000 driver with its built-in enabler. The automatic Installation Software has been carefully designed to detect any combination of hardware and software already installed on your PC, and setup your PC to enable the 3400 Series PC card. If for any reason the Installation Software fails to complete. You can follow the few simple steps to copy the enabler from the Drivers Disk onto your PC. 2.1. Using CARD2CS.EXE with card and socket services. ===================================================== CARD2CS.EXE is a card services client. This means it will make sure that the PCMCIA software supplied with your PC will be used to recognise the 3400 Series card. You will be able to use the hot-insertion features of the PCMCIA software. You may use standard NE2000 drivers supplied by your network operating system, or the drivers from this disk. For Windows 3.11 we recommend using the drivers from this disk. CARD2CS provides the 3400 Series card with a LAN port, a COM port and one interrupt to be shared between the LAN and COM port. If your system cannot does not support shared interrupts use the GCS3000.COM or GCS3000.DOS drivers which gives one interrupt to the LAN port and one interrupt to the COM port. Determine if any card and socket services has been installed on your PC. You identify this by a search through the CONFIG.SYS file for the following lines: Vendor Device Loaded in CONFIG.SYS --------------- ------------------------------- Award Software DEVICE=C:\CARDWARE\PCENABLE.EXE Databook DEVICE=C:\xx\CARDTALK.SYS IBM EZ Play DEVICE=C:\AUTODRV\AUTODRV.SYS Pheonix DEVICE=C:\PCMPLUS\PCMSCD.EXE System Soft DEVICE=C:\CARDSOFT\CARDID.EXE If any one of these exists in your CONFIG.SYS, then you need CARD2CS.EXE to enable the 3400 Series PC card. The following show where to insert the CARD2CS.EXE line. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Award ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Recent Award files are in the CONFIG.SYS as follows: DEVICE=C:\CARDWARE\SSPCIC.EXE <--Socket Services DEVICE=C:\CARDWARE\PCCS.EXE <--Card Services DEVICE=C:\CARDWARE\PCRM.EXE /AUTODETECT <--Resource Allocator DEVICE=C:\CARDWARE\PCENABLE.EXE <--Generic Client Then load CARD2CS : DEVICE=C:\GOLDCARD\CARD2CS.EXE /IRQ=3 /IO=300 /COM3 Older Award files are in the CONFIG.SYS as follows: DEVICE=C:\CARDWARE\SSPCIC.EXE <--Socket Services DEVICE=C:\CARDWARE\PCCS.EXE <--Card Services DEVICE=C:\CARDWARE\PCENABLE.EXE <--Generic Client Then load CARD2CS : DEVICE=C:\GOLDCARD\CARD2CS.EXE /IRQ=3 /IO=300 /COM3 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ SystemSoft ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ SystemSoft files are in the CONFIG.SYS (they may also be in CPQDOS or CARDWIZ directories) as follows: DEVICE=C:\CARDSOFT\SS365SL.EXE <--Socket Services or DEVICE=C:\CARDSOFT\SSVADEM.EXE <--Socket Services or DEVICE=C:\CARDSOFT\SSCIRRUS.EXE <--Socket Services DEVICE=C:\CARDSOFT\CS.EXE <--Card Services DEVICE=C:\CARDSOFT\CSALLOC.EXE CSALLOC.INI <--Resource Allocator Then load CARD2CS : DEVICE=C:\CARD2CS.EXE /IRQ 5 /IO 300 <--Card Client before : DEVICE=C:\CARDSOFT\CARDID.EXE <--Generic Client Older SystemSoft files are in the CONFIG.SYS as follows: DEVICE=C:\CARDSOFT\SS365SL.EXE <--Socket Services or DEVICE=C:\CARDSOFT\SSVADEM.EXE <--Socket Services or DEVICE=C:\CARDSOFT\SSCIRRUS.EXE <--Socket Services DEVICE=C:\CARDSOFT\CS.EXE <--Card Services DEVICE=C:\CARDSOFT\CIC.EXE <--Generic Client Then load CARD2CS : DEVICE=C:\CAR2DCS.EXE /IRQ=3 /IO=300 /COM3 <--Card Client Note: If your SystemSoft CS.EXE (card services) is version 2.05 then use CARD2CS with the extra /o (as in over-ride) to ignore the incorrect database format. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ IBM ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ IBM files are in the CONFIG.SYS as follows: DEVICE=C:\EZPLAY\IBMDSS01.SYS /S0=1 <--Socket Services DEVICE=C:\EZPLAY\IBMDOSCS.SYS <--Card Services DEVICE=C:\EZPLAY\DICRMU01.SYS /MA=C000-CFFF <--Resource Allocator DEVICE=C:\EZPLAY\$ICPMDOS.SYS <--Power Manager Then load CARD2CS : <--Card Client DEVICE=C:\GOLDCARD\CARD2CS.EXE /IRQ=3 /IO=300 /COM3 before : DEVICE=C:\EZPLAY\AUTODRV.SYS AUTODRV.INI <--Generic Client ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Phoenix ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Recent Phoenix files are in the CONFIG.SYS as follows: DEVICE=C:\PCMPLUS\PCMSS.EXE <--Socket Services DEVICE=C:\PCMPLUS\PCMCS.EXE /ADDR=D0 /IRQ=10 <--Card Services DEVICE=C:\PCMPLUS\PCRM.EXE <--Resource Manager Then load CARD2CS : DEVICE=C:\GOLDCARD\CARD2CS.EXE /IRQ=3 /IO=300 /COM3 before : DEVICE=C:\PCMPLUS\PCMSCD.EXE /RS=4 /beep <--Generic Client Older Phoenix files are in the CONFIG.SYS as follows: DEVICE=C:\PCMPLUS\PCMSS.EXE <--Socket Services DEVICE=C:\PCMPLUS\PCMCS.EXE /ADDR=D0 /IRQ=10 <--Card Services DEVICE=C:\PCMPLUS\PCMSCD.EXE /RS=4 /beep <--Generic Client Then load CARD2CS : DEVICE=C:\GOLDCARD\CARD2CS.EXE /IRQ=3 /IO=300 /COM3 Follow the PCMCIA installation instructions in the main user manual that come with your 3400 Series PC card. To copy the relevant files from the drivers disk, follow step 5 below. 2.2. Removing card and socket services. ======================================= If you have card and socket services installed in your CONFIG.SYS but you want to remove them (they do take up a lot of memory, but do provide hot-insertion and beep when you put a card in) follow these steps: Edit your CONFIG.SYS and put a REM in front of the following files ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ SystemSoft DEVICE=C:\CARDSOFT\SS365SL.EXE <--Socket Services or DEVICE=C:\CARDSOFT\SSVADEM.EXE <--Socket Services or DEVICE=C:\CARDSOFT\SSCIRRUS.EXE <--Socket Services or DEVICE=C:\CARDSOFT\SSxxxxxx.EXE <--Socket Services DEVICE=C:\CARDSOFT\CS.EXE <--Card Services DEVICE=C:\CARDSOFT\CSALLOC.EXE CSALLOC.INI <--Resource Allocator DEVICE=C:\CARDSOFT\CARDID.EXE <--Generic Client or DEVICE=C:\CARDSOFT\CIC.EXE <--Generic Client ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ IBM DEVICE=C:\EZPLAY\IBMDSS01.SYS /S0=1 <--Socket Services DEVICE=C:\EZPLAY\IBMDOSCS.SYS <--Card Services DEVICE=C:\EZPLAY\DICRMU01.SYS /MA=C000-CFFF <--Resource Allocator DEVICE=C:\EZPLAY\$ICPMDOS.SYS <--Power Manager DEVICE=C:\EZPLAY\AUTODRV.SYS AUTODRV.INI <--Generic Client ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Phoenix DEVICE=C:\PCMPLUS\PCMSS.EXE <--Socket Services DEVICE=C:\PCMPLUS\PCMCS.EXE /ADDR=D0 /IRQ=10 <--Card Services DEVICE=C:\PCMPLUS\PCRM.EXE <--Resource Manager DEVICE=C:\PCMPLUS\PCMSCD.EXE /RS=4 /beep <--Generic Client ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Award DEVICE=C:\CARDWARE\SSPCIC.EXE <--Socket Services DEVICE=C:\CARDWARE\PCCS.EXE <--Card Services DEVICE=C:\CARDWARE\PCRM.EXE /AUTODETECT <--Resource Allocator DEVICE=C:\CARDWARE\PCENABLE.EXE <--Generic Client ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 2.3. Using CARD2.EXE. ===================== CARD2.EXE is a direct PCMCIA enabler. This means it will make sure that the PCMCIA hardware inside your PC will recognise the 3400 Series card. You will not be able to use hot-insertion as CARD2.EXE works direct with your PCMCIA hardware. But it will save you all the conventional PC memory used by the PCMCIA card and socket services software (60-100 Kbytes). You will need to remove card and socket services before using CARD2.EXE. Refer to section 2.2 to do this. You may use standard NE2000 drivers supplied by your network operating system, or the drivers from this disk. For Windows 3.11 we recommend using the drivers from this disk. CARD2.EXE provides the 3400 Series card with a LAN port, a COM port and one interrupt to be shared between the LAN and COM port. If your system reports an interrupt conflict it may be due to this sharing. Try using the NE2000 drivers we supply, or use the GCS3000.COM or GCS3000.DOS drivers which gives one interrupt to the LAN port and one interrupt to the COM port. CARD2.EXE may be run from the CONFIG.SYS or from a batch (.BAT) file or from the DOS command line. CONFIG.SYS DEVICE=C:\GOLDCARD\CARD2.EXE <--Direct enabler .BAT file C:\GOLDCARD\CARD2.EXE <--Direct enabler DOS Command line C:\GOLDCARD>CARD2.EXE <--Direct enabler Refer to the main User's Manual for full details on the CARD2.EXE enabler. 2.4. Using GCS3000.COM and GCS3000.DOS. ======================================= These two network drivers have PCMCIA direct enablers built in to provide one interrupt for the LAN port and one interrupt for the COM port. This provides the most efficient method of data transfer between the 3400 Series card and your PC. You will not be able to use hot-insertion as the GCS3000 drivers works direct with your PCMCIA hardware. But it will save you all the conventional PC memory used by the PCMCIA card and socket services software (60-100 Kbytes). You will need to remove card and socket services before using the GCS3000 drivers. Refer to section 2.2 to do this. The GCS3000 drivers provides the 3400 Series card with a LAN port, a COM port and two interrupts; one for the LAN and one for the COM port. Please follow the main Users Manual for the details on installing the GCS3000 drivers. 2.5. If you decide to use Grey Cell's software follow these steps A. Insert Driver Disk in drive A:. 5. Type C: at the command prompt. 6. Type MD GOLDCARD to make a new directory. 7. Type COPY A:\*.* C:\GOLDCARD to copy the enabler to your directory. 8. Modify the PATH= statement in your AUTOEXEC.BAT to include path C:\GOLDCARD. Change From PATH=<Original Path> To PATH=<Original Path>;C:\GOLDCARD ***************************************************************************** 3. The Route Map ***************************************************************************** A Route Map is included to explain how to configure the PCMCIA hardware, and install a client workstation. You should use the Route Map with the installation information pack with your hardware and software to understand a specific part of the installstion process. An on-line Route Map is also included as a Windows HELP file, ROUTEMAP.HLP. To start this on-line help file, go to Windows File Manager, and click on Drive A, and then double-click on ROUTEMAP.HLP. Please use this on-line help file with your User's Manual for a comprehensive reference. ***************************************************************************** 4. GCS3000.SYS Enhanced Mode NDIS Driver for Windows NT. ***************************************************************************** 5. Notes on using EMM386 or QEMM ***************************************************************************** The PCMCIA Card standard was first designed for memory cards then the I/O card specification was added. All I/O cards (including Ethernet and Modems) must first be initialised as memory cards and then switched into I/O mode operation by software. The enabler software (such as CARD2.EXE or card and socket services) must see the PCMCIA card as a memory card when it is first inspected. DOS Extended memory managers, such as EMM386 and QEMM, take control of the entire PC memory space and will disable any PCMCIA card memory space. If using card and socket services do not modify the EMM line when using CARD2CS.EXE. If using GCS3000.COM, GCS3000.DOS or CARD2.EXE there are two solutions available: (1) Run the CARD2.EXE to enable the card before EMM386 or QEMM is loaded. (2) Exclude at least 4K of memory from EMM386 or QEMM controlling, then run the program. This is most suitable for the DOS ODI (GCS3000.COM) or NDIS (GCS3000.DOS) drivers. To find out free memory you can use, reboot machine and press <F5> then the screen displays Starting MS-DOS... Run MSD and press <M> to display memory available. ***************************************************************************** 6.
