TROUBLESHOOTING TIPS ==================== for PHILIPS PCA721AF Audio Card version 1.0P Date: 07/27/96 Symptoms: Your computer hangs, reboots itself, or issues a parity error after the audio card is installed; a device in your computer does not work properly since the card's installation; or the system hangs when you enter or exit Windows 3.1 after the card's installation. Solutions: Determine and correct any conflicting I/O, IRQ or DMA setting by performing the following steps: 1. Check the audio card's settings by referring to Section 4.1.1. of your PCA721AF Audio Card User's Manual. 2. Check your other devices' corresponding settings in their respective setup utilities. 3. Compare the card's settings against the settings of the other devices. 4. Change the conflicting setting(s). Although you can either change the audio card's setting(s) or change the conflicting device's setting(s), we recommend that you change the latter's setting(s). Most of the audio card's default settings are required by Sound Blaster games and therefore are better kept unchanged. 5. Reboot your system. Symptoms: An error message which indicates the wave file for sound testing or the start-up configuration file cannot be found is displayed after the computer starts up. Solutions: * Make sure that your AUTOEXEC.BAT file contains a line similar to the following: SET SOUND16=C:\PCA721AF * Make sure that the directory where you installed the card's software contains the SNDTEST.WAV and SOUND16.CFG files. Run the installation program again if necessary. Symptoms: There is no sound output. Solutions: * Make sure that your speakers are properly working and connected to the audio card's LINE OUT or SPK OUT jack. * Type MIXER at a DOS prompt and make sure that the channel volumes are not muted and are set high enough. * Make sure that the audio card is inserted properly in the ISA slot. * Make sure that the card's DMA setting is not used by one of your other devices. * If this problem occurred when you were playing a DOS-based game, make sure that : The card is in Sound Blaster mode. Type SNDINIT or SNDINIT /S at a DOS prompt to find out the current sound card mode and change it if necessary. : Some games require EMM to play digitized voice. Please refer to the documentation that comes with your game software. Symptoms: There is no music or digitized voice or there is only music in certain games. Solutions: * Make sure that your AUTOEXEC.BAT file contains a line similar to the following: SET BLASTER=a220 I5 d1 * Refer to application's user manual to see whether the extended memory or the expanded memory are required. Use a memory manager to set up the required memory. * Make sure that the card is in Sound Blaster Pro mode if you running a Sound Blaster compatible game. Enter SNDINIT or SNDINIT /S at a DOS prompt to find out the current sound card mode and change it if necessary. * Increase the available memory by removing nonessential device drivers and/or any TSR program, including the provided volume control TSR program VOLTSR.EXE, from the memory. Symptoms: Playing audio CD discs gives no output. Solutions * Make sure that the relevant mixer or other volume control settings in DOS, Windows 3.1 and Windows 95 do not mute the CD audio output. * Make sure that your CD-ROM drive's audio out connector and the audio card's audio in connector are properly connected via the supplied audio cable. * Check that your speakers are properly working and connected to the audio card's LINE OUT or SPK OUT jack. * Make sure that the MCI CD Audio driver supplied by Windows 3.1 is installed. Some applications require this driver to play audio CD discs. * Check your CD-ROM drive's user manual for how to properly set it up to play audio CDs. Symptoms: The audio card generates distorted sound output. Solutions: * Try adjusting the relevant mixer or other volume settings in in DOS, Windows 3.1 or Windows 95. * Make sure that your speakers are not defective or of poor quality. * Try moving the card to a different slot to avoid possible interference from its adjacent card(s). Symptoms: Your existing joystick does not work properly after the card's installation. Solutions: Disable the card's game port in the card's DOS-based configuration utility or disable your existing game port/game card by referring to the relevant user's manual. The card's game port may be in conflict with your existing game port/game Symptoms: The joystick connected to this card's GAMEPORT/MIDI connector is not working properly in some games. Solutions: Try reducing your PC's CPU speed according to the instructions of your PC owner's manual. Symptoms: You cannot do a proper recording with a connected device, such as your CD-ROM drive or microphone. Solutions: * Make sure that the device is working properly and well connected to the correct connector on the audio card. * Make sure that you have selected the correct source of recording in the mixer or recording software which you are using. * Make sure that the recording level, or "gain", has been set high enough. * If you are using your microphone for the recording, and the microphone is not powerful enough, add a 20 dB volume boost to the recording signal. Please refer to Sections 4.1.2 and 4.2.2.1 of your PCA721AF Audio Card User's Manual for details. Symptoms: The hot keys of the supplied volume control TSR program have no control over a game's volume level. Solutions: * Type VOLTSR at a DOS prompt to ensure the volume control TSR program is loaded. * Some games may either disable this volume control TSR program or disallow volume control from the keyboard. Check the relevant manual for such information. Symptoms: There is no audio output when running Windows 3.1 applications, MIDI files cannot be played, or you get a MIDI error message. Solutions: * If a "Sound Driver Alert" error message telling you that "Virtual device driver not present or Windows is not running in 386 Enhanced Mode" every time when you enter Windows, make sure that your audio card is properly inserted in the ISA slot. * Double click the Drivers icon in the Control Panel and see whether "PHILIPS PCA721AF Audio Device Driver" appears in the list of the installed drivers in the Drivers dialog box. > If it is there, select the Setup button to enter the first PHILIPS PCA721AF Audio Driver Setup panel. Make sure that the audio configuration and MPU-401 configuration are the same as those of your applications and are not conflicting with the settings of one or more other devices. > If it is not there, perform the following steps: 1. Select Run from the File menu of the Program Manager. 2. Type SYSEDIT at the Command Line and press the OK button. 3. Make sure that the following lines appear in the opened SYSTEM.INI file: [drivers] midimapper=midimap.drv wave=SND924.drv aux=SND924.drv midi=SND924.drv mixer=SND924.drv [SND16.drv] CodecType=CS4231 4. Add any missing line. 5. Close the file. Symptoms: There is no sound or the sound is distorted when you are running Windows Sound System applications. Solutions: * Make sure that the [drivers] section of your SYSTEM.INI file contains the following line: wavemapper=msacm.drv This designates the Microsoft Audio Compression Manager, which is required to play compressed sound files in Windows Sound System applications. * Make sure the Demand Mode DMA is not selected if your system only supports the Single Mode DMA option. See Section 4.2.2.1 of your PCA721AF Audio Card User's Manual. Symptoms: There is no music coming from the game even though the music synthesizer is set to General MIDI. Solutions: * Make sure that the game does support General MIDI for music synthesis. * Make sure that the MPU-401 interface is set to ON by referring to Section 4.1.1 of your PCA721AF Audio Card User's Manual. Also change the I/O port and IRQ if necessary. Symptoms: Sound quality of playing back MIDI files in Windows 3.1 does not improve after adding a wavetable daughter card. Solutions: * Double click the MIDI Mapper icon and make sure that "MPU-401" is selected in the Name box. * Make sure that MPU-401 is selected as the MIDI output in your MIDI applications.Download Driver Pack
After your driver has been downloaded, follow these simple steps to install it.
Expand the archive file (if the download file is in zip or rar format).
If the expanded file has an .exe extension, double click it and follow the installation instructions.
Otherwise, open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start menu and selecting Device Manager.
Find the device and model you want to update in the device list.
Double-click on it to open the Properties dialog box.
From the Properties dialog box, select the Driver tab.
Click the Update Driver button, then follow the instructions.
Very important: You must reboot your system to ensure that any driver updates have taken effect.
