TapeWare 6.10 SP2D Release Notes 10-Feb-1998
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------
Known Problems
--------------
1) Some third party networking products that replace the standard
Wsock32.dll may cause conflicts. These may include IP to IPX gateways
from Cisco and LanBridge by Virtual Motion. To work around the
problem, disable the product during the setup. If you need to reenable
the networking product after setup, copy the Wsock32.dll from the
original Windows CD-Rom to the directory in which you installed.
If you cannot disable the product or need the product to communicate
on your network, you may not be able to install from CD-Rom.
In this case, copy the CD-Rom \WIN subdirectory to your hard disk,
copy the Wsock32.dll to this directory and install from there.
2) If you receive Abends under Intranetware 4.11 with Service
Pack 4a, 4b or 5a installed, obtain Service Pack 5b or above.
This service package is more stable than the previous releases.
3) Under Windows 95 using Microsoft NWLink IPX protocol driver,
communication errors can be caused by an excessive number of dropped
packets going in to the workstation. If you are using the Windows
95 machine as a device server, we recommend either using the Novell
Client 32 or using TCP/IP for your communications protocol.
The problem is caused by an inability of NWLink to receive a
large number of packets from the network and process them quickly
enough within the protocol stack. Under Windows NT, this problem
does not occur.

Fixes and Enhancements - SP1
----------------------------
1) A bug in the MS Exchange connector which caused full verification
jobs to hang has been corrected. The Exchange databases will now
be forced to Quick Verify mode even when Full Verify is selected
which is how the Storage Management database and the MS SQL
databases are handled. These databases cannot be verified
due to the changes occuring in the databases due to the backup
process itself.
2) All virtual objects, like the Exchange database, SQL database,
registry and NDS objects, are now always marked as "changed" in
the database. This allows them to be included in differential
backup jobs.
3) MS Cluster Server support has been added. This module can be
installed as an option. This option allows a "Cluster Container"
to be created which contains all the shared resources within
the cluster. For example, if the SQL service and Drive M: are
cluster resources, drag these to the M: volume and the SQL Database
folder to the new cluster container. Once the resource is located
in the cluster container, whichever member of the cluster has
ownership of the resources will be used for the backup or restore
operation.
4) A problem with SFT-III loading in both IO-Engines and the MS-Engine
has been corrected. When the kernel was loaded into the first
IO-Engine, it would be registered with the database correctly.
However, when the second IO-Engine was loaded, it was recognized
as the first IO-Engine, the second would be registered and the first
would be deactivated.
5) Another problem with SFT-III and IntraNetWare Service Pack 5
has been corrected which caused a database corruption. SP 5
now allocates an NDS handle with every NLM loaded into the
IO-Engine. This caused the internal module loader to timeout
during loading of modules. Typically, this would be displayed
as a corrupted database along with the inability to load
the transport driver.
6) Parallel device support has been added for Shuttle parallel
adaptor chips. These drivers will not work with Iomega, Sony
or BackPack parallel adaptors. Howerver, the Shuttle chips
are used in most parallel devices including those from HP.
7) MS Terminal Server support has been included in the base
product.
8) A bug in the attribute manager which caused abends to occur
when large numbers of user space restrictions, trustees, or
extended attributes were backed up, has been fixed.
9) The service manager and service modules have been completely
updated. In prior versions, the entire administator was run
as a service. Also, only one version of the administrator
was allowed to be run. In this release, the small stub
xxWINSDR.EXE is run which is the service daemon process. The
administrator then uses an internal communication channel to
communicate with the service. This allows multiple copies of
the administrator to be run simultaneously.
10) The setup engine has been improved to allow the updating of
the registry, program manger, links, desktop and files directly
from the installation script. This allows much greater
flexibility in the setup process. It also enhanced the speed
of the setup procedures.
11) The maximum physical transfer sizes to/from the device and
the maximum physical tape block size has been increased from
32K to 256K. The largest device buffer has been increased from
8Mb to 32Mb per device. These changes allow some speed
improvements on DLT devices. However, by default, the sizes
are the same as used in previous releases. To enable the
larger sizes, the .Ini file must be modified. Some controllers
may or may not support the larger sizes and some tape devices
may have problems with the larger block sizes.
12) Several minor visual bugs have been corrected in the Windows user
interface.
13) If the filter of a job was reset using the default button, the
job will no longer filter deleted entries, controllers and devices
will be displayed. This was not normally a problem except the
deleted entries, which caused an excessive number of file not
found errors in the job logs.
14) Additional start/stop times were added to the job log to allow
finer control of the job management. The log now lists the
start/stop of the selection phase, the backup phase, and
each pass. In addition, it now lists the effective throughput
rate values for the entire job.
15) It is now possible to reschedule a failed job for the current
day. In the previous release, once a job was run for the day,
it could not be rescheduled. Howerver, once a job is manually
run, it will not be run again by the scheduler unless you
specifically edit the schedule properties and change the
schedule type to daily, weekly, monthly or yearly.
16) Added device support for the following devices:
Exabyte Eagle TR-4 SCSI
Exabyte Eagle TR-4 IDE/ATAPI
HP Colorado 5Gb IDE/ATAPI
HP Colorado 5Gb Parallel
HP Colorado 8Gb SCSI
HP Colorado 8Gb IDE/ATAPI
HP Colorado 8Gb Parallel
Indigita iDT-2500
Indigita iDT-2700
Seagate STT-20000A SCSI
Seagate STT-20000A IDE/ATAPI
Tecmar NS-20
17) Added loader support for the following loaders:
ATL P1000
Exabyte 18D
Exabyte EXB-218
Exabyte EXB-220
Exabyte EXB-480
Qualstar TLS-2xxx
Qualstar TLS-4xxx
Seagate AIT-LDR
18) A new option has been added to the restore options tab which allows
you to restore files which are in use during the restore operation.
This is supported only on Windows 95/98 and Windows NT systems and
will restore files to the temporary directory. Once the restore
operation is completed, you must reboot the system in order to
replace the files that were in use.
19) The alert manager has been updated and now displays the date and
time of the alert.

Fixes and Enhancements - SP2A
-----------------------------
1) A speed problem with SP1 causing slow backups and restores has
been corrected.
2) A bug in the filters where, when moving an object, it would either
corrupt the display or provided no folders has been corrected.
3) The xxTrace.Txt files is no longer removed after each bootup.
4) The default user to login is now saved in the .Ini file every time
a successful login occurs. On the first login, the ADMIN user is
given.
5) The QIC media specifications have been moved to the xxTapeDev.Ini
file. This allows us to change the specifications for new drives and
media without recompiling and updating the device driver.
6) When adding an object into the database for the first time, the
archive attribute is forced on regardless of the setting from the
actual object. This will force an initial differential job to include
the object in the backup.
7) Changed the order of attempting to find media in an autoloader
requested by a job. In previous versions, the loader would go directly
to the correct slot only if the slot was marked as valid. Now, the
loader will load the tape from the last position where the media was
located. If the media is no longer present at this position, then
a scan of the loaded media will occur.
8) Changed the way the block sizes are overriden in the .Ini files. This
makes it much simpler to expand the block size on a given device or
for the whole system.
9) Corrected a problem in which selecting to log none was actually in
some cases logging all problems.
10) Corrected some compatability problems with NetWare 5.0, NSS and NDS.
11) Added device support for the following devices:
DEC TZ87
DEC TLZ07
12) Added loader support for the following loaders:
ATL L500
HP SureStore 12000
MediaLogic SLA8
Qualstar TLS-2218
Qualstar TLS-2218A
Qualstar TLS-2236
Qualstar TLS-2436
Qualstar TLS-2472
Qualstar TLS-24144
Qualstar TLS-4210
Qualstar TLS-4210A
Qualstar TLS-4220
Qualstar TLS-4420
Qualstar TLS-4440
Qualstar TLS-4480
Seagate AIT
WangDAT LD-8

Fixes and Enhancements - SP2B
-----------------------------
1) A problem which caused a restore job to hang if the Child/Parent
security options where turned off under NetWare has been corrected.
2) A bug introduced with SP2A which causes the log of a restore job
to not report any failures if all files failed has been corrected.
3) Corrected a problem in the database where deleted files or directories
without instances may be left in the database. This caused spurious
error 616 under NetWare.
4) On scanning a subdirectory before a backup, if any type of error
occurs, the error is ignored and the scan continues. In previous
releases, the scan would terminate, which would then miss file
system changes.
5) The exclude settings have been moved to the new xxFilter.Ini file.
This allows us to update the filters as new revisions are released.
If you do change this file to add new permanent filters, make sure
you save off a copy before updating as the update procedure will
overwrite any changes you have made.
6) A problem where the database files under NetWare are attempting
to be backed up and appear in the log as failed has been corrected.
This problem only affected database servers installed on the NetWare
platform.
7) On the Windows platforms, if a critical error occurred, the system
would display a dialog box and wait for user input instead of failing
the operation.
8) Added device support for the following devices:
Tandberg TR-4
9) Added loader support for the following loaders:
Exabyte EX-17
-----------------------------
Fixes and Enhancements - SP2C
-----------------------------
1) Problems with Windows NT 3.51 have been corrected.
2) Removed window header shading under Windows 98.
3) Made some minor revisions for Unix/Linux compatability to the
make procedures and to the internal kernel support modules.
4) Added device support for the following devices:
Tandberg SLR-6
-----------------------------
Fixes and Enhancements - SP2D
-----------------------------
1) A collision with a NetWare 5.0 public symbol has been corrected. This
was mostly seen when the NSS administrator was being used.
2) A possible data loss when using a predefined rotation scheme has
been corrected. This data loss may occur when using the minimal
number of tapes and is due to incremental backups. The defaults for
all simple rotation schemes have now been changed to use differential.
This eliminates the possibility of data loss due to overwriting tapes
too early.
3) A possible problem in the Windows service manager has been corrected.
This problem could occur if the service was stopped and a pending
operation was being performed.
4) Corrected a problem with updating scanned objects if an object
selected in a job is a terminal object. For example, if a file
is selected to backup in differential mode, it would not have been
recognized when the file changed.
5) Corrected a problem in the instructions screen where the incorrect
tape set would be displayed if the job ended on the same day as
it started and the tape set was a special set (ie. Monthly Set).
6) Corrected a problem in the loader status property windows where
the movement of the media was not displayed for the Identify and
Rebuild operations.
7) Added device support for the following devices:
Aiwa GD-8000
Aiwa TD-8000
Aiwa TD-8001
Aiwa TD-20001
HP SureStore T20
Sony SDT-10000
