++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ | | | HP VECTRA VL 6/XXX SERIES 8 BIOS REVISION HISTORY | | | ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ This document details the contents of the BIOS revisions since the first shipments of the product. The future revisions planned at this time are also listed. Hewlett-Packard does not commit to the specification of the future revisions or their availability. REVISIONS SUMMARY ===================== Revision No Revision date HP Flashing utility & version ----------- ------------- ----------------------------- HN.02.04 April 16th h 99 phlash.exe v1.43 platform.bin v1.09 HN.02.02 February 8th 99 phlash.exe v1.43 platform.bin v1.09 HN.02.01 September 18th 98 phlash.exe v1.43 platform.bin v1.09 HN.02.00 September 9th 98 phlash.exe v1.43 platform.bin v1.09 HN.01.09 August 27th 1998 phlash.exe v1.43 platform.bin v1.09 (do not use previous versions). HN.01.06 July 6th 1998 phlash.exe v1.43 platform.bin v1.09 (do not use previous versions). HN.01.04 first release phlash.exe v1.43 (do not use previous versions). platform.bin v1.08 Note: ===== Bios version HN.01.05 and HN.01.07 don't exist! Bios version HN.02.03 was not released on the web. Difference between Bios HN.01.08 and HN.01.09 only concerns some localization strings, which are more consistent in non-US versions (for HN.01.09). Thus it doesn't make any sense to release bios HN.01.08. LANGUAGES ========= This BIOS is localized in 11 languages : English, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, French, German, Italian, Norwegian, Polish, Spanish, Swedish. Setup screens are always in English but the Error Message Utility is translated into the above 11 localizations. NEW FEATURES / UPGRADE RECOMMENDATION ===================================== NEW FEATURES & CHANGES SINCE HN.02.03 ------------------------------------- - Includes Microcode for PIII stepping C0. NEW FEATURES & CHANGES SINCE HN.02.02 ------------------------------------- - A new field in Bios Setup is added to enable or disable the Processor Serial Number. It applies only to Pentium III processors. It has no effect on PII or Celeron processors. It is disabled by default. It does NOT impact CMOS map. NEW FEATURES & CHANGES SINCE HN.02.01 ------------------------------------- - Advanced passwording feature: When an Administrator password is set, and the User password minimum length is defined, the user password cannot be cleared. - More than 512 MB of memory are supported: More than 512 MB of memory (768 MB max) are supported whatever the processor. - Introduced the Pentium III microcode & naming in the bios. - Introduced the support of remote Power ON on the 5064-6057 HP LAN card. NEW FEATURES & CHANGES SINCE HN.02.00 ------------------------------------- - New settings for video bios that improve the video controller working frequency. NEW FEATURES & CHANGES SINCE HN.01.09 ------------------------------------- - New video Bios to support G200-based motherboards. - Start with keyboard locked option removed from setup. Choices are 'no password' or 'password at startup'. - ECC memories support has been added. It's disabled by default. - new video bios. - new LAN 3COM integrated bootrom. - new summary screen. - Enhanced responsiveness of ESC,F2 keys during POST Note: upgrading from previous bios versions (HN.01.09 or HN.01.06) does not require a "clear CMOS" switch. UPGRADE RECOMMENDATION ====================== [ ] All users upgrade [ ] Hardware subsystem specific [ ] OS specific upgrade [ ] Motherboard revision specific [x] Problem specific LIMITATIONS =========== Not a problem, explanation of functionality: -------------------------------------------- + By default, the network bootrom is not enabled. + The default for the PCI Slots' Bus Master field is currently set to Disabled. If you need this enabled, do so via BIOS Setup for each PCI slot (Advanced --> PCI Slot Configuration --> PCI Slot X menu). + Mouse is functional while in Keylock mode. It is purposely not disabled due to design problems with having mouse interrupts generate too many SMIs at run-time. + If you perform a Shutdown and Restart instead of a Shutdown, from within Win95 or NT, and you have Start With Keyboard Locked enabled, and you have the Short/Long Reset field set to 'Short', the system will not start with the keyboard locked. It will only do so on a cold start. The workaround to this is to set the BIOS Setup field, Short/Long Reset in the Advanced/PCI Slot Configuration Menu to 'Long'. Note that by default, it is set to 'Long'. + If in Keylock mode, and the user presses the power button continuously for more than about 4 seconds, the system will power off. + Shutdown from Windows performs a warm start instead of a cold start, unless 'Short/Long Reset' field is set to 'Long', which is the default case. COMPONENTS REVISION =================== - Video bios G100 VGA/VBE BIOS (V1.2) New G200 VGA/VBE BIOS (V1.2) - 3COM Bootrom 3.00 - Summary.com 3.13h - Serial.com A.05.00 - Advpw.com 3.2 - Emu.com 2.2 - Lanpost.com 2.5 - Phlash.exe 1.43 - Platform.bin 1.09 - phlash32.exe G1.17 WHY DOES HEWLETT-PACKARD ROLL THE BIOS ? ====================================== Minimizing the number of the revisions of the BIOS is an objective of Hewlett-Packard. However Hewlett-Packard may have to release new revisions for any one of the following reasons : ENHANCEMENTS ------------ This is the case when a major new feature is available on the market. Good examples are Microsoft Windows 95, a new level of the Plug and Play standard, a new level of the PCI standard. PROCUREMENT ASSURANCE --------------------- Hewlett-Packard qualifies an additional supplier for a component in order to secure the procurement. COMPONENT ROLL -------------- A semiconductor supplier introduces a new version of a component, and stops the production of the previous version for technological improvement reasons. QUALITY ------- To improve the quality, Hewlett-Packard has to make use of a more reliable component, or to implement a design change. COST ---- Hewlett-Packard uses a different supplier which can supply the equivalent component at a much lower price. BUG FIX ------- Bugs discovered in the previous version are fixed.
