* Fixed bug that caused serial ports to be starved of transmit data when
  others ports were transmitting large blocks of data.  This manifested
  itself as choppy transmit throughput when multiple ports were running.

* Fixed crash that occurred on USB errors or when the USB cable was
  abruptly disconnected.

* Fixed support for SSU2-100.

  from an abruptly closed port to be retained in the driver's receive buffer.

Release 5.90

* Fixed a problem with write request processing that caused a write to
  be lost on rare occasions.

* Fixed a crash that occasionally occurred when a write request was
  issued by an application with a timeout value greater than zero but
  less than the resolution of a Windows timer tick (about 10ms).

* Added a retry workaround for a USB chipset bug that caused data returned
  from the device to be discarded on rare occasions.

* Added an option to the INF file for forcing the first COMx portname.
  Please refer to the comments in QTUSBBX2.INF for details.  This is
  an unsupported feature supplied as-is.  Note that if you edit the INF to
  enable this option, you will break the WHQL signature and you will
  receive unsigned driver warnings from Windows when you install the device.

Release 5.50

* Fixed a problem where write requests would sometimes get lost
  when a condition existed that prevented transmit operations from
  starting, e.g. XOFF received.  This typically manifested itself
  in difficulty closing the application that issued the write requests.

* Real-time event tracing capability has been added to these drivers.
  This will allow users to gather information about hard-to-reproduce
  problems on their own computers and send highly-detailed traces to
  Quatech technical support for analysis.

* Added an item called USB Error Timer to the Device Manager property
  sheet.  This value is used to "tweak" the driver's tolerance of errors
  reported by the Windows USB software stack.

  The sudden disconnect workaround in Release 5.40 caused problems for
  a small number of users who reported that the USB device seemed to be
  working fine and then suddenly "disappeared."   Release 5.40 was very
  aggressive in watching for errors coming from the Windows USB software
  stack.  The condition we worked around was a blue screen in the Windows
  USB code that occurred after the cable was disconnected but before our
  driver was notified of the disconnect.

  USB ERROR TIMER IS MEANT TO BE ADJUSTED ONLY UNDER THE ADVICE
  OF QUATECH TECHNICAL SUPPORT!  Do not change it unless you are
  having "disappearing" problems and you consult with us first!

* Added an item called Tx Load Count to the Device Manager property
  sheet.  This value is used to "tweak" the number of bytes worth of
  serial data that the device firmware writes into the UART at one time.
  Changing this setting make be useful for applications that require
  very fast response to transmit flow control, such as CNC dripfeeding.
  Please note that lowering this value will impact throughput capabilities
  at high baud rates.  Nearly all users should leave this setting at
  its default value.

  disconnect of the USB cable from the device.

Release 5.30

* Added Windows 2000 and Windows XP support for Plug-and-Play detection
  of certain devices, such as external modems, attached to USB-to-Serial
  serial ports.  This support uses the built-in SERENUM service and works
  with devices conforming to the Plug and Play External COM  Device
  Specification.   In general, if it works on a built-in serial port,
  it should work with a USB-to-Serial serial port.

Release 5.20

* Added necessary device driver functions to support customer field updating
  of USB-to-Serial firmware (the software that runs inside the USB-to-Serial box).

* The USB-to-Serial firmware revision level is displayed on the Advanced Options
  page of the Device Manager properties sheets for the box (Windows 2000/XP)
  or for any of the serial ports (Windows 98/Me).

* The "clocks" option (RCLK/XCLK to AUXIN/AUXOUT) for RS-422/485 connector
  pinout configuration in the Device Manager property sheet has been removed.

* Robustness improvement for cancelled USB transfers.
  (Windows 2000/XP drivers only.)

* Fixed Windows XP Driver Verifier bug detected for IRP_MJ_SYSTEM_CONTROL.
  (Windows 2000/XP drivers only.)

* Fixed bug in flow control handling when an external device is asserting
  flow control before the serial port is opened.  Improved how modem status
  information is handled at port open and after flow control settings changes.
  (Windows 2000/XP drivers only.)

* Fixed a rare install bug where the wizard complains about a name length.
  (Windows 2000/XP drivers only.)

* If no error replacement character is defined by the application, characters
  received with parity errors will now be passed through to the application
  as they should be.  (Windows 2000/XP drivers only.)

* Improvements have been made in the handling of software flow control when
  the IOCTLs dealing with forcing XOFF and XON states are involved.

  CHANGES TO THE USB-to-Serial PRODUCT LINE MADE IN MARCH 2003.

* Added support for new USB product IDs associated with revised USB-to-Serial
  products.  The new products contain resident firmware and no longer use
  a firmware bootloader driver.  The "qtbt????.sys" driver files have been
  deleted from the fileset.

* From Release 5.00 onwards, only the newer USB-to-Serial devices will be
  supported.  There is a separate package of Release 4.20 for the older
  devices using a bootloader driver.

Release 4.20

* Fixed firmware bug that was causing garbage characters to appear inter-
  mittently on data transfers.

* Corrected problem with RS-422/485 connector setup on the advanced options
  property page.  "Modem Control" and "All Loopback" were transposed.

* Deleted the controls for "prebuffer trigger level" and "disable powerdown"
  from the advanced options property page.  Customers who had changed the
  "disable powerdown" setting in the past can uninstall and reinstall their
  Quatech USB-to-Serial device to revert to default if they so choose.
  The "prebuffer trigger level" setting is now selected automatically by
  the device drivers for optimal performance.

* Various stability enhancements (Windows 2000/XP drivers only).

Release 4.11

* Adjusted time delay for ATC mode.  It is now functional for baud rates
  in the range of 1200 bps to 460800 bps.  After the transmit prebuffer
  is emptied, there is a waiting period before the transmitter is disabled
  and the receiver is enabled to allow time for the UART FIFO to empty.
  Depending upon how many characters are remaining in the UART FIFO, this
  will occur anywhere from immediately after the last character (if the
  FIFO is full) to:

            160 / (baud rate in bps)

  if the FIFO is empty.

  fix timing-related blue screen related to waits on events.

* Fixed ATC mode.  It is now functional for baud rates in the range of
  2400 bps to 115200 bps.  After transmit buffers are emptied, there is a
  waiting period before the transmitter is disabled and the receiver is
  enabled.  This period is approximately equal to:

           20.5 us + 3.3 us * (baud rate divisor/rate register)

* Fixed timing-related problem that caused a crash on Windows 2000/XP.

Release 4.03

* There are no changes to the Windows 98/Me software in this release.

* Fixed crash under Windows NT4 or Windows 2000 involving applications
  making frequent DeviceIoControl calls for IOCTL_SERIAL_GET_COMMSTATUS
  during a surprise removal of the USB cable.

* Worked around a new problem with the Visual Basic MSCOMM control under
  Windows 2000 that was exposed by the Release 4.01 stability enhancements.
  The symptom is an "error 8020" returned for the control's Input operation.
  This problem appears to be a bug in the MSCOMM control itself.  The
  workaround in this driver release passes the test cases where we saw
  problems.

* Adjusted Windows 2000 write timeout behavior to better mimic builtin ports
  in unusual cases where an application specifies a timeout period too small
  to allow for the entire write to complete.  This applies mainly to programs
  sending large blocks of data at very low baud rates.
  Previous releases of this driver strictly honored an application's write
  timeout setting by cancelling the portion of a write that was pending in
  the Windows USB stack.  This tended to result in inaccurate "bytes sent"
  counts reported to the application, as the USB stack did not report partial
  transfer counts.
  This release estimates how long it will take the device to consume any data
  pending in the Windows USB stack and extends the timeout period accordingly
  in an effort to avoid discarding data.

Release 4.01

* Further enhancements for serial printer timeouts under Windows 2000.

* Fixed problem of occasional Windows 2000 crash when the USB cable is
  unplugged during active transfer of data over the serial ports.
  (This is called a surprise removal.)

* If a serial port was open and a surprise removal occurred, previous
  versions of the driver required a reboot of Windows 2000 before the port
  could be used again after the USB cable was reattached.  This has been
  corrected.  Any applications holding open handles for the port(s) must
  close those handles before the USB cable is reattached.

* Added a new option to disable powerdown of the USB device.
  By default, SSU, DSU and QSU devices are powered down and placed in a
  USB "suspend" state when none of their serial ports are open.  If the new
  "Disable Powerdown" checkbox on the "Advanced Options" property sheet is
  checked, the USB device will remain powered at all times.  Choosing this
  option can help the USB device respond more crisply when a serial port
  is opened on a link where data transfer is already active.

* Win32 SetCommState() function returned error 0x87 when the DCB's
  XonChar==XoffChar.  While technically an error (see the SDK docs),
  the standard Windows serial driver didn't flag it as such.  We
  added compatibility with this behavior.

How To Update Drivers Manually

After your driver has been downloaded, follow these simple steps to install it.

  • Expand the archive file (if the download file is in zip or rar format).

  • If the expanded file has an .exe extension, double click it and follow the installation instructions.

  • Otherwise, open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start menu and selecting Device Manager.

  • Find the device and model you want to update in the device list.

  • Double-click on it to open the Properties dialog box.

  • From the Properties dialog box, select the Driver tab.

  • Click the Update Driver button, then follow the instructions.

Very important: You must reboot your system to ensure that any driver updates have taken effect.
