-* RVMODE13 V1.0 Readme *- 1.0 - Introduction When I first got my Diamond Stealth II I was really impressed with it particularly when you considered its price, but I soon noticed that some things left quite a bit to be desired. The VGA mode 13 (320*200) performance was really quite laughable. Then I discovered that a VESA mode had the same properties but was 15 times faster and then I started thinking, "hmm, it would be great if I could run my old games in the VESA resolution instead of the crappy mode 13". So I hacked this program together, saw that it worked, cleaned it up a bit and here's the result. 2.0 - How it works RVMODE13 hooks interrupt 10 which programs use to set mode 13. Whenever a program requests mode 13, RVMODE13 will set up the much faster VESA mode instead. This is done completely transparent to the program requesting mode 13. 3.0 - How to use it It really couldn't be simpler. Run RVMODE13 and then run the program you'd like to have sped up. 4.0 - So, what's the downside? First of all, the faster VESA mode is not VGA compatible. This means that programs that set mode 13 and then tweak the VGA registers to achieve modeX won't work properly. At best it'll look strange, at worst it will crash horribly. Always save your work before using RVMODE13, particularly when using it in Windows '95. For the same reason I don't recommend running RVMODE13 in your autoexec.bat. Only run it when you have to. Secondly, the refreshrate seems to be different. This is normally not a problem but some programs might rely on the mode 13 refreshrate for timing. 5.0 - What hardware and software does it work with? Mine ;) Seriously though, I've tested it with my Stealth II, Quake (though it can already use VESA) and Carmageddon. There are only a few reasons why it shouldn't work on other Rendition boards or indeed completely different cards. Please let me know if it works (or doesn't) for you, both on your card and with your software. I could then include the list in future releases. Enjoy your Rendition card and feel free to give this little program to your friends. Carsten Sorensen csorensen@ea.comDownload Driver Pack
