3Com (R) Corporation LAN Installation Disk
for the 3Com Megahertz LAN PC Card Family
Configuration and Diagnostic Instructions Summary File

Overview
--------
The configuration portion of the program allows you to change
the configuration parameters for the adapter to fit the
specific environment in which the PC Card is installed.

The diagnostic portion of the Configuration and
Diagnostic Program is designed to make sure that
the adapter is installed correctly and
functioning properly in your computer.
The basic tests check the
physical components, connectors, and
circuitry of the adapter and
require only that the adapter be installed
in the computer.

The Echo
tests check the adapter's ability
to transmit data on the network and
require that the adapter be connected
to a network.

The computer containing the adapter to be
configured or tested must be
running DOS or DOS-mode only.

Running DOS INSTALL Under Windows 95 or Windows 98

You should run INSTALL.EXE from a DOS or
DOS-mode command prompt.

Restart the computer. Upon restart,
immediately press the <F8> key.
At the menu, choose "Safe Mode
Command Prompt Only" (usually #7)

If you decide to run INSTALL.EXE
from withing Windows 95,
use it only to read the
informational documentation.
Do not use it to configure
the adapter nor to run AUTOLINK.EXE.

Starting the Configuration and Diagnostic
-----------------------------------------
There are two ways to start the program:

1. From the INSTALL.EXE program, by
    selecting Configuration and
Diagnostic Program on the main menu.

2. Manually, from the root directory of
    LAN Installation Disk 2,
    by typing the following command:

    INSTALL [command keyword] [parameter list]

    INSTALL represents the 3Com Configuration
    and Diagnostic Program name.
The brackets indicate that the command keyword and parameter
    list are optional.

INSTALL without any arguments invokes the program in
    full windows mode.

    Command Line Keywords
    ---------------------
The command keywords and parameters are not case-sensitive, so
CONFIGURE, configure, and Configure, for example, will all work.

    CONFIGURE
Configures an adapter using command line configuration
        parameters

Configuration
-------------
The adapter can be configured in either full screen windows mode or
command line mode.

    Full Screen Windows Mode
    ------------------------
To configure the adapter using full-screen windowing, type:

    INSTALL [Enter].
Select Configuration and Diagnostic Program on the main menu.
Then select the Configure Adapter option in the Configuration
    and Diagnostic menu.

    Command Line Mode
    -----------------
While Command Line Parameters are included here for completeness,
use of the Command Line Mode may produce anamolous undesired
    results.

Command Line with Explicit Parameters
-------------------------------------
Command syntax: INSTALL CONFIGURE [ /AUTO /IOBASE:N /INT:N
                 /TR:N /MODEM:N /OPTIMIZE:N /LINKBEAT:N ]
Each parameter must be of the structure "/keyword:value" and
contain no blank spaces. For example: /iobase:300 /int:3

Command line configuration parameters are used to configure the
adapter using only the option settings you specify. In most cases,
any combination of parameters can be used. Therefore, it is
possible to modify only a few settings if needed.

/AUTO
The /AUTO parameter configures the adapter automatically based
on the software's best estimate using interpreted system
