Release Notes Elite(TM) XL 20ppm printers These release notes apply to: Version 3.31 of Elite XL 20/600, 20/800, and 20/1200 September 1998 Congratulations on your purchase of an Elite XL laser printer from GCC Technologies. These release notes detail new features and some additional information and operational tips that are not documented in the Elite XL 20ppm User's Manual. As these release notes apply to the entire Elite XL 20ppm family of printers, some notes may not apply to your particular Elite XL model. For software updates and additional documentation, please visit the GCC web site at http://www.gcctech.com/. To purchase additional consumables or optional accessories, please visit the GCC Direct Sales web site at http://www.gccdirect.com/. New features and additions 1200 dpi resolution The Elite XL 20ppm family has a new member: the Elite XL 20/1200 is capable of high-quality 1200 dpi printing on paper sizes up to 13 x 20 inches (330 x 508 mm). Your existing 20/600 or 20/800 printers can be upgraded to the 20/1200. Please contact GCC for details on your upgrading options. 13x35 paper size The Elite XL 20ppm now supports a new paper size, 13x35, which has dimensions of up to 13 x 35.4 inches (330 x 900 mm). This allows full-bleed printing of two side-by-side 11 x 17 inch or A3 spreads on oversize paper or polyester plates, with space for registration marks and page labels. Please note that the maximum resolution supported for this paper size is 800 dpi. Diskless LPR/LPD printing The Elite XL 20ppm supports TCP/IP LPR/LPD printing without requiring a hard disk to be attached to the printer. If a hard disk is attached to the printer, LPD will spool print jobs to it for more efficient printing. For more information about LPD printing, refer to the GCC Networking Guide. Additional fonts Elite XL 20ppm printers currently ship with a bonus set of 45 Bitstream(R) TrueType(R) fonts, stored on the Elite XL 20ppm Software and Documentation CD-ROM. In order to use these fonts in your documents, you must install them on your computer. Macintosh(R) The Macintosh font set for the Elite XL 20ppm comes in a compressed form and must be installed using the accompanying installer application. The installer automatically places the fonts into the correct location depending on the Macintosh System version in use. To install the fonts on your Macintosh: 1. Open the folder labeled "Bitstream(TM) Font Collection" on the Elite XL 20ppm CD-ROM. 2. Double-click the installer "45 Font Installer". 3. Follow the instructions in the installer. Windows(R) The PC font set for the Elite XL 20ppm should be installed using the Fonts option in the Control Panel. To install the fonts on a Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0 system: 1. Open the "Fonts" icon in the Control Panel folder. 2. Under the "File" menu, select "Install New Font...". 3. Browse to the "Fonts" folder located on the Elite XL 20ppm CD-ROM. 4. Select the fonts you wish to install and click "OK". To install the fonts on a Windows 3.1 or Windows NT 3.5 system: 1. Open the "Fonts" icon in the Control Panel. 2. Click on "Add...". 3. Browse to the "Fonts" directory located on the Elite XL 20ppm CD-ROM. 4. Select the fonts you wish to install and click "OK". For more information see the "Fonts" chapter in the Elite XL 20ppm User's Manual. Additional information, operational tips, and work-arounds Edge-to-edge printing The Elite XL 20ppm is capable of edge-to-edge printing. However, due to physical limitations, there may be some degradation in print quality near the edges of the page. The specifications are as follows: for the 13-inch-wide paper sizes (13x18, 13x18.5, 13x20, or 13x35), the area subject to degradation is within 4 mm (0.16 in.) of the top and bottom edges, and within 5 mm (0.20 in.) of the left and right edges of the page; for all other paper sizes, the area is that within 4 mm of each edge. Windows 3.1 and 13-inch-wide paper The included printer driver for Windows 3.1 does not support the 13-inch-wide paper sizes (13x18, 13x18.5, 13x20, or 13x35). GCC will make an updated driver available on our web site in the near future. AccuGray at low resolutions Please be aware that AccuGray is calibrated for consistent, high-quality results at resolutions of 600 dpi and above. At resolutions of 300 or 400 dpi, which are sometimes used for faster draft printing, AccuGray will not compensate for dot gain with the same precision as for the higher resolutions. Mixing paper feed orientations If you are feeding Letter size or A4 paper from more than one paper source, make sure the paper is inserted with the same orientation in both sources. For example, if Letter-size paper is inserted in Tray 1 in long-edge feed orientation, then Letter-size paper placed in the multipurpose feeder or an optional lower tray must also be inserted long-edge feed. Do not insert one long-edge feed and one short-edge feed. Control-D and network printing from Windows Some users may experience problems in network printing from various versions of Windows, due to the insertion of unnecessary Control-D characters. In most cases, this can be avoided by proper configuration of the PostScript driver and/or the application. However, for those times when these measures do not suffice, GCC has provided a workaround solution in the FIXCTRLD directory on the Elite XL 20ppm CD-ROM. Please see the file README.TXT in that directory for additional details. QuarkXPress(R) 3.3 for Macintosh, LaserWriter(TM) 8 and PPD vs. PDF files The Printer Type pop-up menu in the QuarkXPress 3.3 Page Setup window lists all PDF files located in the PDF folder as well as all PPD files located in the Printer Descriptions folder in the Extensions folder. (The PDF folder is located inside the QuarkXPress 3.3 folder.) When using LaserWriter 8, we recommend (as does Quark) that you choose the PDF file. The Elite XL PPD and PDF are named internally in such a way that only the PDF will appear in the Printer Type menu, if you have installed all the software as follows: 1. Performed a complete installation of the Elite XL 20ppm software. 2. Installed the QuarkXPress PDF file into the PDF folder in the main QuarkXPress folder. The PDF file is located in the Elite XL software Application Files folder (specific to your Elite XL model). The Application Files folder is located in the Elite XL 20ppm Folder. Both of these folders are copied onto your hard drive during the initial installation. If you have done this, you will see the Elite XL (PDF) displayed in the Printer Type box in the Page Setup window. The PDF file for the Elite XL will appear as follows: GCC Elite XL (followed by the model number of your printer) Remember, if you do not copy the Quark PDF file from the Elite XL's Application Files folder to the QuarkXPress PDF folder, the Elite XL selection in the Printer Type menu will be the PPD, not the recommended PDF. If for some reason you need to select the PPD, remove the Elite XL PDF from the Quark PDF folder, restart the application, and reselect the Elite XL option in the Printer Type menu. Complexity errors Elite XL supports PostScript Level 2 and PCL(R) 5/HP-GL/2(R) emulation. With the "all ports active" and "auto-sensing and switching" features, Elite XL can differentiate between PostScript and PCL print jobs received through any of its active interfaces. However, because of the memory requirements of auto-switching, documents containing complex text and graphics may not print due to low memory failures. PCL complexity, PCL fragmentation, or PostScript VM errors, are a symptom of this problem. Printing failures may be avoided if you select the "PostScript only" mode when printing complex PostScript documents, or "PCL only" mode when printing complex PCL documents. Installing additional RAM in the printer will prevent low memory failures when in "Auto Switch" mode. The factory default setting for Elite XL is "PostScript only" mode. See your User's Manual for additional information on configuring your Elite XL and enabling PCL functionality. To determine if a document is not printing due to insufficient memory, try the following: PostScript If PS/PCL Sensing is set to Auto switch, change PS/PCL Sensing to PostScript only, switch the printer off and on, and reprint the document. This setting will make more memory available to PostScript printing. If the document prints successfully, and you frequently print documents of similar complexity, you will either have to leave the printer set to PostScript only, or install additional memory to use "Auto switch" mode. If PS/PCL Sensing is already set to PostScript only, try printing the document at a lower resolution. Additional memory may be required to print at higher resolutions. PCL If you are printing a Letter or A4 size document in long-edge-feed orientation, change the paper feed orientation to short-edge-feed. If PS/PCL Sensing is set to Auto switch, change PS/PCL Sensing to PCL only, switch the printer off and on, and reprint the document. This setting will make more memory available to PCL printing. If the document prints successfully, and you frequently print documents of similar complexity, you will either have to leave the printer set to PCL only, or install additional memory to use "Auto switch" mode. If PS/PCL Sensing is already set to PCL only, try printing the document at 300 dpi. Additional memory may be required to print at higher resolutions. Refer to the Elite XL 20ppm User's Manual for additional details on changing printer settings. Starting the printer with a hard drive attached When a hard drive is attached to the printer, make sure that the drive is powered on before powering on the printer. Otherwise, either the hard drive will not be recognized or the printer will not initialize. Hard drive maximum size The Elite XL 20ppm can access up to 2GB worth of hard disk space. If a hard drive that has greater than 2GB of capacity is attached to the Elite XL, the printer's Start Page and Configuration Page will show the hard disk as having a capacity of 2GB. Printer's name after reset As shipped from the factory, the printer's name, in the front panel, will read Elite XL (followed by the model #). If you reset the printer to its factory settings (see the User's Manual), the printer's name will change to Elite XL (no model # following). =================================================================== All trademarks "(TM)" and registered trademarks "(R)" mentioned herein are the property of their respective holders.
