New in This Software Release
============================
The PRO/1000 adapter software has the following new features and
improvements:

  - Support for Copper RJ-45 connectivity over standard Category 5
    cabling 
  - 10/100/1000 Mbps operation over copper
  - Improved Performance
  - Support for Advanced PCI features such as 64bit/66MHz PCI support
  - Advanced Networking Services: 802.3ad Link Aggregation Teaming
    (including support for AFT, ALB, GEC), 802.1Q VLAN, and 802.1p
    tagging
  - HTML User's Guide for improved access to information
  - Support for TCP Checksum Offloading running Windows* 2000, 
    Netware*, and Linux
  - Support for PCI Hot Plug running Windows and NetWare*
  - Support for large memory in Solaris* and UnixWare* 7
  - Support for Jumbo Frames in Solaris, Linux, and Microsoft drivers
  - New generation of the PROSet utility
  - PROSet II interface for Microsoft NT 4.0 and Windows 2000 allows
    simultaneous use of multiple, advanced network services including
    teaming and VLANS
 
Browser-Viewable User's Guide
=============================
The PRO/1000 adapter User's Guide is viewable with any recent web
browser that supports frames. You can view the guide by inserting the
CD in your computer and waiting for the Autorun menu to appear. Click
the User's Guide button on the Autorun screen. 

Another way to view the guide is to start the Windows Explorer, go to
the \INFO folder on the Intel CD and double-click the file called
INDEX.HTM.

If you do not have a browser installed, you can obtain one from either
of the following locations:

	Netscape:    http://www.netscape.com
	Microsoft:   http://www.microsoft.com
	Opera:	     http://www.opera.com

To install the User's Guide on your hard disk, view the Help file,
guide.hlp, in the root directory.

For hardware installation, a Quick Installation Guide is also
available on the CD in the \INFO folder, called GUIDE.PDF. This is the
same printed document that is provided in the product box.

Making Floppy Disks for NetWare* and Windows* Installation
==========================================================
To make a floppy disk of the drivers for NT, NetWare or Windows 2000,
use the MAKEDISK utility. Place a formatted floppy disk in your drive.
Start MS-DOS, or Start the MS-DOS prompt in Windows. At the command
line type:

   MAKEDISK A: OS <Enter>

where, A: is your floppy drive and OS is your operating system. The
choices are NT (Windows NT) NW (NetWare), and W2K (Windows 2000). The
Windows 2000 disk will contain drivers only, while the NT 4.0 disk
will also install PROSet II.

PROSet II
=========
An improved PROSet utility, PROSet II, is now loaded by Setup.exe for
Windows 2000. To start the Setup utility, click Install Advanced
Features on the CD autorun screen, or double-click the SETUP.EXE icon
in the \SETUP folder on the Intel CD. For more details on Setup, see
the User's Guide.

DMI and SNMP Software Support
=============================
The new Setup includes installation for the following management
operations:

* DMI 2.0 (Desktop Management Interface 2.0) and SNMP
Software for DMI and SNMP is located in the \dmi-snmp folder on this
CD. For DMI-SNMP information for Windows NT, see the dmiwin.txt file
in the \dmi-snmp\win32 directory.

* A WMI Provider, DMI-SNMP, installable by Setup
For more information, see the WBEM folder on this CD.

Adapter Teaming Features: Adapter Fault Tolerance (AFT), Adaptive
Load Balancing (ALB), and Gigabit EtherChannel* (GEC)
=================================================================
Instructions for setting up AFT, ALB, and GEC and covered in the
Teaming section of the User's Guide. 

Note: Do not change team/VLAN settings through the device manager in
Windows 2000.

Speed/Duplex Modes (PRO/1000 T)
===============================
Intel Gigabit adapters must use auto-negotiation to achieve link at
1000 full duplex (1000 does not support half duplex). All three speeds
(10, 100, and 1000) may be both auto-negotiated and advertised.
Speeds of 10 and 100 may be forced. You must match the setting of the
link partner to the adapter's settings (preferably auto-negotiate).
Refer to the section entitled "Configure Duplex" in the User's Guide.

How To Update Drivers Manually

After your driver has been downloaded, follow these simple steps to install it.

  • Expand the archive file (if the download file is in zip or rar format).

  • If the expanded file has an .exe extension, double click it and follow the installation instructions.

  • Otherwise, open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start menu and selecting Device Manager.

  • Find the device and model you want to update in the device list.

  • Double-click on it to open the Properties dialog box.

  • From the Properties dialog box, select the Driver tab.

  • Click the Update Driver button, then follow the instructions.

Very important: You must reboot your system to ensure that any driver updates have taken effect.
