Elite(TM) 12ppm printers
These release notes apply to:
Version 3.2 of Elite 12ppm
March 1998
Congratulations on your purchase of an Elite 12ppm laser printer from
GCC Technologies. These release notes detail new features and some
additional information and operational tips that are not documented in
the Elite 12ppm User's Manual.

New features and additions
Diskless LPR/LPD printing
The Elite 12ppm now supports TCP/IP LPR/LPD printing without requiring a
hard disk to be attached to the printer. If a hard disk is attached to
the printer, LPD will spool print jobs to it for more efficient
printing. For more information about LPD printing, refer to the GCC
Networking Guide.
Additional fonts
Elite 12ppm printers ship with a bonus set of Bitstream(R) fonts. The
Elite 12ppm comes with 45 additional TrueType(R) fonts, stored on the
Elite 12ppm Software and Documentation CD-ROM.
In order to use these fonts in your documents, you must install them on
your computer.
Macintosh(R)
The Macintosh font set for the Elite 12ppm comes in a compressed form on
the CD-ROM and must be installed using the accompanying installer
application. The installer automatically places the fonts into the
correct location depending on the Macintosh System version in use.
To install the fonts on your Macintosh:
1. Open the folder labeled "Bitstream(TM) Font Collection" on the Elite
12ppm CD-ROM.
2. Double-click the installer "45 Font Installer."
3. Follow the instructions in the installer.
Windows(R)
The PC font set for the Elite 12ppm comes on the CD-ROM and should be
installed using the Fonts option in the Control Panel.
To install the fonts on a Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0 system:
1. Open the "Fonts" icon in the Control Panel folder.
2. Under the "File" menu, select "Install New Font...".
3. Browse to the "Fonts" folder located on the Elite 12ppm CD-ROM.
4. Select the fonts you wish to install and click "OK".
To install the fonts on a Windows 3.1 or Windows NT 3.5 system:
1. Open the "Fonts" icon in the Control Panel.
2. Click on "Add...".
3. Browse to the "Fonts" directory located on the Elite 12ppm CD-ROM.
4. Select the fonts you wish to install and click "OK".

Additional information, operational tips, and work-arounds
AccuGray at low resolutions
Please be aware that AccuGray is calibrated for consistent, high-quality
results at resolutions of 600 dpi and above. At resolutions of 300 dpi,
which is sometimes used for faster draft printing, AccuGray will not
compensate for dot gain with the same precision as for the higher
resolutions.
QuarkXPress(R) 3.3 for Macintosh, LaserWriter(TM) 8 and PPD vs. PDF
files
The Printer Type pop-up menu in the QuarkXPress 3.3 Page Setup window
now lists all PDF files located in the PDF folder as well as all PPD
files located in the Printer Descriptions folder in the Extensions
folder. (The PDF folder is located inside the QuarkXPress 3.3 folder.)
When using LaserWriter 8, we recommend (as does Quark) that you choose
the PDF file. The Elite PPD and PDF are named internally in such a way
that only the PDF will appear in the Printer Type menu, if you have
installed all the software as follows:
1. Performed a complete installation of the Elite 12ppm software.
2. Installed the QuarkXPress PDF file into the PDF folder in the main
QuarkXPress folder. The PDF file is located in the Elite software
Application Files folder (specific to your Elite 12ppm model). The
Application Files folder is located in the Elite 12ppm Folder. Both of
these folders are copied onto your hard drive during the initial
installation.
If you have done this, you will see the Elite (PDF) displayed in Printer
Type box in the Page Setup window. The PDF file for the Elite will
appear as follows:
GCC Elite (followed by the model number of your printer)
Remember, if you do not copy the Quark PDF file from the Elite's
Application Files folder to the QuarkXPress PDF folder, the Elite
selection in the Printer Type menu will be the PPD, not the recommended
PDF.
If for some reason you need to select the PPD, remove the Elite PDF from
the Quark PDF folder, restart the application, and reselect the Elite
option in the Printer Type menu.
Complexity errors
Elite 12ppm supports PostScript Level 2 and PCL(R) 5/HP-GL/2(R)
emulation. With the "all ports active" and "auto-sensing and switching"
features, Elite 12ppm can differentiate between PostScript and PCL print
jobs received through any of its active interfaces. This includes
LocalTalk(R)/Serial, Parallel, and EtherTalk(R) ports.
However, because of the memory requirements of auto-switching, documents
containing complex text and graphics may not print due to low memory
failures. PCL complexity, PCL fragmentation, or PostScript VM errors,
are a symptom of this problem. Printing failures may be avoided if you
select the "PostScript only" mode when printing complex PostScript
documents, or "PCL only" mode when printing complex PCL documents.
Installing additional RAM in the printer will prevent low memory
failures when in "Auto Switch" mode. The factory default setting for
Elite 12ppm is "PostScript only" mode. See your User's Manual for
additional information on configuring your Elite 12ppm and enabling PCL
functionality.
To determine if a document is not printing due to insufficient memory,
try the following:
PostScript
If PS/PCL Sensing is set to Auto switch, change PS/PCL Sensing to
PostScript only, switch the printer off and on, and reprint the
document. This setting will make more memory available to PostScript
printing. If the document prints successfully, and you frequently print
documents of similar complexity, you will either have to leave the
printer set to PostScript only, or install additional memory to use
"Auto switch" mode.
If PS/PCL Sensing is already set to PostScript only, try printing the
document at a lower resolution. Additional memory may be required to
print at higher resolutions.
PCL
If PS/PCL Sensing is set to Auto switch, change PS/PCL Sensing to PCL
only, switch the printer off and on, and reprint the document. This
setting will make more memory available to PCL printing.
If the document prints successfully, and you frequently print documents
of similar complexity, you will either have to leave the printer set to
PCL only, or install additional memory to use "Auto switch" mode.
If PS/PCL Sensing is already set to PCL only, try printing the document
at 300 dpi. Additional memory may be required to print at higher
resolutions.
Refer to the Elite 12ppm User's Manual for additional details on
changing printer settings.
LPR printing from Macintosh
If you install Apple's new LaserWriter 8.5.1 (or later) driver on a
Power Macintosh, you can now create LPR desktop printers that print via
TCP/IP to the Elite 12ppm's LPD interface. A Macintosh with a 68k
(non-PowerPC) processor cannot print to the Elite 12ppm via an LPR
desktop printer. 68k Macintoshes can still use EtherTalk or LocalTalk to
print to the Elite 12ppm. Refer to Apple software documentation for
additional details and restrictions.
Starting the printer with a hard drive attached
When a hard drive is attached to the printer, make sure that the drive
is powered on before powering on the printer. Otherwise, either the hard
drive will not be recognized or the printer will not initialize.
Hard drive maximum size
If your Elite 12ppm supports SCSI, it can access up to 2GB worth of hard
disk space. If a hard drive that has greater than 2GB of capacity is
attached to the Elite, the Elite's Start Page and Configuration Page
will show the hard disk as having a capacity of 2GB.
Printer's name after reset
As shipped from the factory, the printer's name, in the front panel,
will read Elite (followed by the model #). If you reset the printer to
its factory settings (see the user's manual), the printer's name will
change to Elite (no model # following).

Download Driver Pack
After your driver has been downloaded, follow these simple steps to install it.
Expand the archive file (if the download file is in zip or rar format).
If the expanded file has an .exe extension, double click it and follow the installation instructions.
Otherwise, open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start menu and selecting Device Manager.
Find the device and model you want to update in the device list.
Double-click on it to open the Properties dialog box.
From the Properties dialog box, select the Driver tab.
Click the Update Driver button, then follow the instructions.
Very important: You must reboot your system to ensure that any driver updates have taken effect.
