Installation This section descibes the steps to install a ELSA WINNER Display Driver for Windows 95. If you have used a ELSA GLoria-M/L before and you only want to update your drivers, please refer section 3.6 (Update Installation) The graphics accelerator used on the ELSA GLoria boards is not VGA comptible. Therefore, if you want to use this graphics boards under Windows 95, you need a VGA in your computer (for booting and DOS Fullscreen sessions). On the GLoria-M and GLoria-L this VGA is integrated as a S3-Virge. ("intergrated VGA"). But you have the option to use the ELSA Gloria with an extra, seperate VGA board ("external VGA"), even with two seperated monitors. In this case you must disable the intergrated VGA with the DIP switch on the GLoria board. Please note the differences in the following sections of this file. Further, there are differences depending you install Windows 95 the first time with a GLoria board in your computer or you put the GLoria in a computer with a running Windows 95. 3.1 integrated VGA / Installing Windows 95 Put the ELSA GLoria into your computer and start the Windows 95 installation procedure. After finishing the installation procedure, Windows 95 works in VGA Mode. Now you need to install the drivers for the GLoria graphics board. Open the Device Manager and click on the "+"-sign on "Other devices". You will find two entries "PCI Early non-VGA device" For this devices the ELSA GLoria drivers must be installed. Select in "Properties/Driver" the action "Change driver..." and as "Hardware Type" "Other devices". Click on "Have disk..." and enter the path to the ELSA GLoria driver files. If you are invited to reboot your system, do NOT reboot. Proceed in the same way with the other "PCI Early non-VGA device". Necessarily click on "Have disk...", and do not use the device "GLoria-M/L (DELTA)" more than once! Now activate the GLoria graphics board as described in section 3.5. 3.2 integrated VGA, Windows already installed Remove your "old" VGA and put the GLoria into your computer. On startup Windows 95 will detect the integrated VGA as "PCI Early VGA device". Depending on either Windows detects a known or an unknown device, Windows will install a driver or promts for a driver from a hardware vendor provided disk. If Windows installs drivers for a known device, follow th instructions in section 3.2.2 3.2.1 Unknown Early VGA Device In the following dialog, select "Do not install a driver..." Windows 95 does not need drivers for the integrated VGA. Next, Windows will find two "PCI Early non-VGA devices". For this devices install the ELSA GLoria display driver. After the following reboot, you can select resolution an color depth with "Properties for Display" 3.2.2 Windows has installed drivers for the integrated VGA If Windows has detected the internal VGA as "S3-Virge" or other, do NOT RESTART the computer, when Windows has installed the drivers. Next Windows will find two "PCI Early non-VGA devices". For this devices install the ELSA GLoria display drivers. Do NOT REBOOT also at this point. Instead open the Device Manager and change the driver for "Display Adapters/S3-Virge..." to "Standard Display Adapters (VGA)". Now activate the GLoria graphics board as described in section 3.5. 3.3 external VGA, Installing Windows 95 Pleas install Windows 95 without mounting your GLoria board into your computer. If your external VGA is an PCI board, put it into a PCI slot with preferably a lowest available number. When Windows is running on the external VGA, switch off your computer and install the ELSA GLoria board. Select a PCI slot with a higer number than your external VGA is installed in. Proceed as described in section 3.4 3.4 external VGA, Windows already installed Install the ELSA GLoria baord into your PC and switch on your computer. Windows 95 detects some "PCI Early non-VGA devices". Install for each of them the ELSA Gloria display driver. Do NOT REBOOT your system on the following request. First deactivate your external VGA with the Device Manager as described in section 3.5. Now you can restart your system and then select resolution and color depth with "Properties for Display". 3.5 Activating the ELSA GLoria board Open the Device Manager ("Properties for System"). Under the type Display Adapters, you will find more, probably with an exclamation point marked, entries. Doubleclick on the entry "S3 Trio..." respectively "Standard Displays Adapter (VGA)" to open the dialog "Properties for ...". Remove the checkmark in the "Original configuration (current)" line on the Property Page "General". Click OK and restart your computer. Then select resolution and color depth with "Properties for Display". If you select another color depth, DO NOT RESTART your system on the following request. REBOOT the computer with "Start/Shut Down/Restart Computer". 3.6 Update Installation Install the new driver with "Properties for Display"/Settings/ Change Display Type/...". Do NOT restart the computer when the installation prompts. Colse the "Proerties for Display" dialog without restarting and reboot your system with "Start-Menu/Shut Down.../Restart the computer" ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Revision History This section describes changes to the previous releases of this disk. 4.1 Version 4.03.00.1100 - first retail version 4.2 Version 4.03.1101 - Direct3D capabilities extended * more texture formats (RGB-233, PALETTIZED4) * Transparent textures - "QuickRes" ColorDepth changing now available - Direct3D Bugs fixed - VESA Support included - DDC Support included ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Release notes 5.1 ELSA.INI entries The working mode of the driver can manipulate by entries in the file ELSA.INI. Normally you will need to reboot your machine to mak this settings working. Most of this entries will set by ELSA tools and don't need to modify manually. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. Known Bugs and Operating Notes This section documents known anomalies or problems and gives hints on work arounds. 6.1 Version 4.03.00.1100 6.1.1 System crash with Microsoft S3 driver If the automatic hardware detection routine finds the integrated S3 TrioV and then installs the generic S3 driver ("S3 or S3 Trio32/64"), the system crashs if it is started with this driver. Install the driver for a Standard Display Adapter (VGA) instead. 6.1.2 System crash with VESA Modi If using VESA Modi in a DOS-Box, the System hangs. This problem will be fixed in next driver version. 6.1.3 Changing color depth with QuickRes If QuickRes changes the color depth without restarting Windows, sometime you can see drawing errors. QuickRes patches (!) the display driver, so the driver can no longer work properly. ------------------------------------------------------------------------Download Driver Pack
