Adapter H/W installation instructions
HARDWARE INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
HP J3239A DeskDirect EL-10 ISA Combo Adapter
Use these instructions to install and test the HP J3239A DeskDirect
EL-10 ISA Combo Adapter. This adapter is used in an ISA or EISA slot
in the computer to connect a 10-Mbit/s IEEE 802.3 network. On the
adapter you can use either the twisted-pair RJ-45 (HP EtherTwist)
connector, the BNC thin coaxial (HP ThinLAN) connector, or the AUI port
(IEEE 802.3 standard for the Attachment Unit Interface for connecting
a transceiver compatible with the network media). A connection to the
RJ-45 or BNC will be automatically detected.
These instructions summarize the installation procedures detailed in
the users' manual that accompanies the adapter.
===================================================
GENERAL PROCEDURE TO INSTALL, CONFIGURE, AND VERIFY
===================================================
1. Install the adapter into an ISA or EISA slot in the computer.
CAUTION: Ensure that power has been disconnected from the computer
before opening the computer's case.
IF you use an EISA slot, you must do step 3 below.
IF you use an ISA slot, you will skip step 3 below.
Follow the adapter's manual, along with the documentation for
installing an accessory board into the computer.
2. Attach the LAN cable from your network to the matching connector
on the adapter.
IF you use the RJ-45 or BNC port, it will be automatically detected.
IF you use the AUI port for connecting your transceiver, then you
must later configure detection of the AUI port by using step 7
below.
3. IF the adapter was installed into an EISA slot in step 1, you must
run the EISA configuration utility supplied with the computer to
configure adapter resources. Now perform the "EISA CONFIGURATION
UTILITY PROCEDURE" located at the end of this file, and then return
to step 4 below.
4. Reconnect power to the computer and boot DOS, so that you can
run the HPEISET utility in the next step to verify the adapter
installation.
NOTE: You must use native DOS, not a DOS prompt window. And
network drivers must not be loaded during the following
procedure.
IF DOS is not installed, boot from a DOS boot diskette
that does not load drivers.
5. Run the HP utility "HPEISET" on the Support Disk for HP J3239A.
For the disk in drive a, you would enter at the DOS prompt:
a:
hpeiset
Your HP DeskDirect EL-10 ISA adapter will be recognized.
IF more than one HP EL-10 adapter is recognized by HPEISET, you
will be asked to select one specific adapter to recognize this
time.
IF HPEISET fails to recognize the HP DeskDirect EL-10 ISA adapter,
check that the card is seated fully in the slot and that the
card IS the J3229A DeskDirect EL-10 ISA Combo Adapter. (Other
HP adapters are not recognized by this HPEISET utility.)
6. AUTO-CONFIGURATION:
The ISA Plug-and-Play compliance of your computer's BIOS allows
the I/O address range and interrupt (IRQ) to be automatically
configured.
IF you are not sure of the computer's Plug-and-Play compliance,
check the computer's manual or BIOS revision information.
IF the computer is NOT ISA Plug-and-Play compliant, or you used
an EISA slot in step 1 above, then do the following step 7 to
manually configure the adapter.
7. MANUAL CONFIGURATION AND CONFIGURATION CHECKING:
In HPEISET, use the main menu items "View Configuration" and
"Manual Configuration
Using these menu items is optional if all of the following are true:
Using a computer with ISA Plug-and-Play BIOS
Using the RJ-45 or BNC connector
Using half-duplex operation
Using only one network adapter in the computer
Using these menu items is required for the following cases:
MULTIPLE HP EL-10 ISA ADAPTERS:
You will be asked to select one specific adapter for the tasks in
this session of HPEISET, by specifying the MAC address. This is
a 12-digit hexadecimal number printed on the adapter card.
MULTIPLE NETWORK ADAPTERS, HP AND/OR NON-HP:
For ISA Plug-and-Play BIOS, the I/O address range and interrupt (IRQ)
for all adapters will be automatically configured, and may be
reconfigured for previously installed adapters. You must use
"View Configuration" in the main menu for all adapters and make a
note of the settings; you will need to supply them during
software installation.
For non-Plug-and-Play BIOS, see the next case below.
NON-PLUG-AND-PLAY COMPUTER:
For a computer whose BIOS is not compliant with ISA Plug-and-Play,
use "Manual Configuration" to change the setting of "Operating Mode"
to "Jumperless". Then set "I/O Base" address and "Interrupt".
The factory default settings are address 300h and interrupt 3.
IF you will be using a non-plug-and-play OS/NOS such as
Windows NT or Windows for Workgroups, then use "View
Configuration" in the main menu and record the settings.
You will need to supply them during software installation.
EISA SLOT:
When using an EISA slot for the adapter, use "Manual Configuration"
to change the setting of "Operating Mode" to "Jumperless". Then
make sure the setting of "Interrupt" is the same as the setting
specified in the EISA configuration utility in step 3 above.
AUI PORT RECOGNITION:
For use of the AUI port on the adapter, in "Manual Configuration"
change the setting of "Medium Type" from "Auto Detect" to "10Base5
(AUI)".
FULL DUPLEX:
For optional full-duplex operation of the adapter (using the RJ-45
connector), in "Manual Configuration" change the setting of "Full-
duplex" from "Disabled" to "Enabled". The attached switch or other
network device must also be configured for full duplex.
8. Proceed with this step for both manual and auto-configuration.
Verify the adapter by selecting "Card Test" in HPEISET's main menu.
The pass and fail count for each of the tests is displayed. If any
tests fail, press [SPACE] to display possible causes and solutions.
After making any corrections, repeat steps 5 through 8 to see if the
failure persists.
NOTE: Your system may hang if the network drivers are loaded when
you do this step. Refer to step 4 above.
9. Optionally, perform a preliminary test of the adapter's ability to
communicate on the link by selecting "Link Test" in HPEISET's main
menu. Then select menu item "Set up as Initiator".
NOTE: The link test will not pass unless there is a responder for
IEEE 802.2 test packets on the network.
10. Quit HPEISET: select "Exit Program". Restart the computer.
11. Install the network driver.
The support disk contains the driver and installation files that
allow the LAN adapter to be used with the networking product on
the computer. It also contains "readme" files, with file types
of ".TXT". While the "readme" files can be loaded manually,
the recommended procedure is to run the "SETUP" utility for the
HP J3239A EL-10 ISA adapter, located on its support disk, to read
the information in the files.
Run the HP utility "SETUP" on the support disk for HP J3239A.
For the disk in drive a, you would enter at the DOS prompt:
a:
setup
Select menu item "Software Installation & Instructions", and then
press [F1] on the next screen to view the driver installation
instructions. Then select your operating system and/or network
operating system.
Follow the instructions presented to install the driver and file
set required for your network environment.
NOTE: You can get other reference information by selecting the
menu item "Other Support Information" in place of "Software
Installation and Instructions".
====================================
EISA CONFIGURATION UTILITY PROCEDURE
====================================
Add this procedure to step #3 above only if the adapter is installed in
an EISA slot.
1. Run the EISA configuration utility supplied with the computer.
Follow the prompts displayed to add the LAN adapter, sometimes
called an "accessory board", to the computer.
2. Supply the HP configuration file in one of the following ways:
IF the utility requests the vendor diskette, then insert the Support
Disk for HP J3239A into the floppy drive and select the file:
!HWP1A00.CFG
Proceed to step 3 below.
IF the utility does NOT request the vendor diskette, then exit
the utility and copy the file:
!hwp1a00.cfg
to the directory or diskette containing the EISA configuration
utility. For example, if the support disk is in drive A and
the utility is in the working directory, enter the command:
copy a:*.cfg
Then restart this EISA configuration utility procedure from step
1 above.
3. Use the EISA utility to view the adapter configuration.
Resolve any conflicts with the I/O address range.
Make sure the adapter is not set for memory mapping or boot ROM.
Record the slot number and I/O address range setting for later use
in your installation process.
4. Return to step 4 in the general procedure above.
