This installation guide: o Lists the software requirements needed to use the SMC Ethernet and Fast Ethernet SCO MDI AHS 5.x Driver v2.05 (spwr) with SMC Ethernet and Fast Ethernet (9432) LAN adapters. o Explains how to use the SCO Custom program to install the SMC EtherPower 9432 AHS 5.x Driver files from the distribution disk. SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS To use the SMC EtherPower Ethernet and Fast Ethernet SCO AHS 5.x UNIX Driver files, you must have networking products that use the drivers. You must have the following software and hardware systems: o SCO OpenServer Enterprise Edition, Release 5.0 installed on a 486/Pentium with PCI bus pc machine. o One or more SMC EtherPower Ethernet Adapters can be installed in the same machine. You need at least one of the following items: o SCO TCP/IP o SCO OSI by Retix o SCO IPX/SPX o Microsoft LAN Manager for UNIX systems, using either SCO TCP NetBIOS or Microsoft NetBEUI o Any compatible stack provided by a third-party vendor SCO Open Desktop/Open Server Release 3.0 includes TCP/IP and IPX/SPX, and it can be upgraded to include the rest. If you do not know which stacks are included with your Open Desktop system, use "custom(ADM)" to list the products installed on your system. INSTALLING the SMC EtherPower SCO AHS 5.x LAN UNIX and DOS DRIVER FILES SPECIAL Notes for selecting 10/100 Mbps on SMC9432: The default for mode setting for SMC9432 is AutoMediaDetection (AMD). By default the Adapter is able to adjust its link speed according to the media from which the adapter is attached. However, you can set it to either BNC, or UTP and LineSpeed of 10Mbps/100Mbps HalfDuplex or FullDuplex by selecting the Advance Option. See the CONFIGURING THE SMC 9432 SCO AHS 5.x Driver Disk FOR SCO UNIX Section #7 for details In this release the SCO "custom" program can install the driver from a DOS diskette. Thus, you need to have the binary distribution file "CUSTOM.DST". This file must be located under A:\SCO\CUSTOM.DST if you are installing from the drive A or B:\SCO\CUSTOM.DST if you are installing from drive B. To create "custom.dst" simply do as follows: In DOS machine type 1. Create a subdirectory on your floppy disk "\SCO" 2. Copy SPWR.MDI into \SCO subdirectory that you have created in step 1. 3. Rename SMPW.MDI to CUSTOM.DST Note: If you desire additional configuration information about your networking stack, refer to the appendixes on the Release and Installation SCO OpenServer Network Driver. INSTALLING THE SMC 9432 SCO AHS 5.x Driver Use the following procedure to install the SMC SCO MDI LAN UNIX Driver files. 1. Log in as root. 2. Shut down the system and go to System Maintenance mode by typing the following command and pressing Enter: shutdown -y -g0 -i1 3. At the shell prompt, type: custom 4. Press the Enter key. The Custom menu appears with the "Software" option highlighted. 5. Select Software then enter to begin the installation. The Custom program highlights "Install New". 6. Press Enter. Select the host machine that you want to install from then press enter. 7. Select Media that you want to install from select Floppy Disk Drive then press enter. 8. The Custom program offers you a choice of installing the "Entire Product", "Packages", or "Files." The "Entire Product" option is highlighted. 9. Press Enter to select the "Entire Product" option. The Custom program prompts you to insert Distribution Floppy in an available floppy drive. 10. Insert the SMC EtherPower SCO AHS MDI Driver Disk in the floppy drive. The SMC EtherPower SCO AHS MDI Driver binary distribution disk is available in UNIX or DOS(A or B:\SCO\CUSTOM.DST) format. 11. Press Enter. After the driver is installed, the following message appears at the bottom of your screen. ---------------------------------------------------------------- After installing the SMC 9432 SCO MDI Driver Disk, please use netconfig to add drivers to your system. Press <Enter> to continue. ---------------------------------------------------------------- 12. Press any key to continue with the installation. The following message appears briefly on the screen: ---------------------------------------------------------------- Checking file permissions... ---------------------------------------------------------------- and you return to the main Custom menu. The software list on your screen now includes the "SMC EtherPower II (9432BTX) 10/100Mbps Driver (version 2.0.3)". 13. Use the tab key to highlight the "Hardware" option. Press enter then select X to exit the custom program. 14. Proceed to the next section to configure the SMC Ethernet driver for SCO UNIX and the networking stack. CONFIGURING THE SMC 9432 SCO AHS 5.x Driver Disk FOR SCO UNIX The following procedure describes how to use the "netconfig" utility to configure the SMC EtherPower driver for SCO UNIX and the networking stack. 1. Type: netconfig 2. Press the Enter key. The "Hardware" prompt appears. 3. Presse enter. The sub menu displays the following options: Add new LAN Adapter Add new WAN Connection Remove Network Device (Modify Hardware Configuration) (Examine Hardware Conficuration) Exit Use up/down arrow key to highlight the "Add new LAN Adapter" then press enter. 4. The program will detect the presence of the SMC EtherPower Adapter 9432 are in the system. The menu now displays: "SMC EtherPower II (9434BTX) - PCI Adapter PCI Bus#0 Device# Funct#" if an SMC 9432 is found. 5. Use tab to get to the adapter menu. Then highlight the type of adapter that you want to install. Then select continue. 6. You are here to change the hardware setting of the adapter. With PCI adapter the SMC Adapter was already selected and set to a conflict free configuration. Thus, you do not need to change anything unless you want to change the link speed(10/100) for SMC 9432 to operate at 10 or 100 If you decide to change the link speed then select "An Advanced Option". For SMC9432 the following options are available. MediaType: AutoDetect (Auto Detection of Media Type) BNC (Coaxial) UTP LineSpeed: AutoNegotiate (Auto Speed Detection 10/100 Half or FullDuplex) LineSpeed10 (10Mbps HalfDuplex) LineSpeed100 (100Mbps HalfDuplex) FullDuplex10 (10Mbps FullDuplex) FullDuplex100 (100Mbps FullDuplex) or simply press continue to let hardware figure out. NOTES: The default setting for the SMC 9432 is AMD (AutoDetect). 7. Link the desire protocol stack to the SMC EtherPower (9432BTX) driver. 8. Select Hardware->Exit to quit from netconfig, you will be prompted to relink the kernel. Answer OK to relink the kernel and rebuild the kernel environment. 9. After the kernel is successfully rebuilt, the following message appears: ---------------------------------------------------------------- The kernel has been successfully linked and installed To activate it, reboot your system Setting up new kernel environment ---------------------------------------------------------------- The system prompt, #, appears after this message. 23. Run "haltsys" to halt your system, then reboot your system. Note: Make sure you halt and shut down your system in the proper manner. Otherwise, you may corrupt system and user files.
