SMC8041TX V.2 Drivers Installation Guide on Macintosh 8/9

This installation instructions guide users to install SMC8041TX V.2 
drivers on Macintosh 8/9. Two ways users can get the source of 
the zipped file of driver and utility. One way is to get the file 
from CD and another from web site. The following describes detail 
installation instructions.


1. Web site access:

Download "SMC8041R2.sit.zip", a compressed file, from Web site to your
Macintosh system hard disk. At the current directory (the same as the 
compressed file), double click (execute) the file, then it will be 
automatically extracted to have files in "SMC Drivers" directory. If you 
cannot extract it, please download the "Stuffit Expander" from 
http://www.stuffit.com.expander/download.html 

A) If you want to install the driver directly, please follow the
   steps below under "SMC Drivers" directory (current directory):

   a. Double click (execute) the program, "SMC8041R2Install", 
      three selections are shown:
      "Easy Install", "Custom Install" and "Custom Remove"
      (If you have more than one partition or disk, you may click 
       "Switch Disk" button to select the system partition.)

   b. If you select the "Easy Install", you can directly click 
      "Install" button to start install SMC8041R2 driver. If the 
      "Custom Install" mode is selected, tick the check box in 
      front of "SMC 10/100 PC Card v1.0", and click the "Install" 
      button to start install SMC8041R2 driver.

   c. A warning message box pops up showing that other applications
      must be closed. Just click the "Continue" button and the installion
      process continues.

   d. After the installation is finished, a message window pops up showing
      the installation is successful completed. Click the "Quit" button to 
      finish the installation.

   e. You can also select the "Custom Remove" to remove the driver already 
      installed. After you select the "Custom Remove", tick the check box 
      in front of "SMC 10/100 PC Card v1.0", then click the "Remove" button. 
      Please follow steps c. and d. above to complete the removal.

2. CDROM/Hard, floppy disk access

B) If installing from a floppy disk, you need to copy extracted files 
   (from SMC8041R2.sit.zip file) to a floppy disk. Change the volume name 
   of the floppy disk to "SMC Drivers". Or copy the whole directory "SMC 
   Drivers" extraced files (the directory included) to a floppy disk. Then 
   you can start to install the driver. Find the program "SMC8041R2Install" 
   and follow the steps a. to e. in section A) above to complete driver and 
   setup utilities installation.
 
C) If installing the driver and utilities from a CDROM, you need to make 
   (burn in) a "SMC Drivers" directory with extracted files (from 
   SMC8041R2.sit.zip file) in it. Or get the CDROM from your product package.
   Open the directory "SMC Drivers". Follow the steps a. to e. in section A) 
   above to complete driver and setup utilities installation.

D) If you copy (burn in) the compressed file, SMC8041R2.sit.zip, to CDROM, 
   you need to extract it to your Macintosh hard disk. You can extract the 
   file from the hard disk (copy the file to your hard disk) or extract 
   the file directly form CDROM. If extracting the file from a hard disk, 
   follow steps in section A) above.

   If extracting the file from a CDROM, you will have an error message window. 
   Discard it because the CDROM is a read-only media. Just click the "OK" button, 
   then a dialog window pops up to let you select another destination disk or 
   directory to extract the files. After the extraction, it creates a directory, 
   "SMC Drivers" at the selected directory. Go to "SMC Drivers" directory and 
   follow the steps a. to e. in section A) above to complete driver installation.

How To Update Drivers Manually

After your driver has been downloaded, follow these simple steps to install it.

  • Expand the archive file (if the download file is in zip or rar format).

  • If the expanded file has an .exe extension, double click it and follow the installation instructions.

  • Otherwise, open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start menu and selecting Device Manager.

  • Find the device and model you want to update in the device list.

  • Double-click on it to open the Properties dialog box.

  • From the Properties dialog box, select the Driver tab.

  • Click the Update Driver button, then follow the instructions.

Very important: You must reboot your system to ensure that any driver updates have taken effect.
