Chapter 1

Introduction

The Netelligent 10 and 10/100 Ethernet PCI controllers make use of the
32-bit local bus interface of a PCI slot to connect to 10 or 100Mb/s
Ethernet networks running over UTP or coaxial cabling. They are
bus-mastering controllers that conform to the Peripheral Component
Interconnect (PCI) Local Bus Specification, and they all feature
auto-sensing drivers, full software configurability, bracket-mounted
LEDs for easy monitoring, and full-duplex support. The members of this
product family are:

* Netelligent 10/100 TX PCI UTP Controller for 10Base-T and 100Base-TX
  networks (#169845)
* Netelligent 10 T PCI UTP Controller for 10Base-T networks (#242500)
* Netelligent 10 T/2 PCI UTP/Coax Controller for 10Base-T and 10Base-2
  networks (#292856)
* Netelligent Dual 10/100 TX PCI UTP Controller for 10Base-T and
  100Base-TX networks (#245559)
Package Contents

Your Netelligent Controller package should contain these items:
* Netelligent Ethernet PCI Controller, enclosed in an anti-static bag.
* Sealed envelope containing 3.5-inch diskettes.
* One copy of this manual, the Netelligent Ethernet and Fast Ethernet
  PCI Controllers Installation Guide.
* Two inserts: Product Quality Statements and Limited Warranty
  Attachment.

Online Documentation

This guide contains all the information you need to install your
controller. Online documentation for installing the controller drivers
is included on the driver diskette. The README.TXT in each diskette's
root directory locates the information you need to install and
configure the drivers, as well as the most recent product release
information.

Chapter 2

Hardware Installation

This chapter identifies the components of the Netelligent 10 and 10/100
Ethernet PCI Controllers, and it also tells you how to install the
controllers. Since the Ethernet PCI family of products complies with
the PCI Plug and Play specification, the controller automatically
configures itself when the machine is turned on. Before removing the
cover of your computer, be sure to refer to the manufacturer's
documentation for the proper method of installing controllers and
safeguarding you from electrical shock.

Installing the Controller

Electrostatic Discharge Precautions
A discharge of static electricity from a finger or other conductor can
damage components on the controller. This can make the controller
inoperable.

To prevent electrostatic damage, follow these precautions:

* Transport and store parts in static-safe containers.
* Keep electrostatic-sensitive parts in their containers. Place parts
on a grounded surface before removing them from their containers.
* Avoid touching pins, leads, or circuitry.
* Always properly ground yourself when touching a static-sensitive
  component or assembly.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
WARNING: To avoid personal injury and equipment damage, consult the
safety information and user documentation provided with your equipment
before attempting installation. Many PCs can produce hazardous energy
levels. Do not remove enclosures or bypass the interlocks provided to
control these hazards.

To reduce the risk of personal injury from hot surfaces, allow the
internal system components to cool before touching.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Remove your computer's cover. Observe the precautions above to avoid
electric shock or static electric discharge.

2. Install the controller in an expansion slot in your computer. Make
sure the controller fits snugly into the slot you have chosen and
that it does not touch a controller installed in an adjacent slot.

3. Replace the computer's cover, and connect the controller's UTP or
BNC cabling. Media selection is made automatically when you plug a
cable into one of the connectors.

4. Restart the computer. If you want to use the Netelligent diagnostics
utility and are running Windows 95, use the <F8> key, which takes
you to a Windows boot menu. From there, select "Previous Version of
DOS" or the Windows 95 "Command Prompt."

5. Using the diagnostics utility found on the diskette shipped with the
Netelligent controller, start Diagnostics and run QuickCheck, which
verifies that the controller components are functioning correctly.

Chapter 3
Configuring the Controller

The NICStart Configuration Utility presents complete configuration
choices through a graphical interface.

When powered up, PCI systems will automatically configure the Base I/O
address and the Interrupt Request (IRQ) line for the controller. Other
options (such as Line Speed) will be set by the driver.

Note: Some PCI machines allow you to set a controller's IRQ line. If
yours allows you to make this selection, make sure you select an IRQ
line that is not being used by any ISA or EISA controllers installed
in the machine. Most PCI controllers can share IRQs, but they cannot
share IRQs with ISA or EISA controllers. (Consult your computer's
documentation to determine if you can set the controller's IRQ line.)

Configuring with NICStart

You can use NICStart if you have one or more Compaq Netelligent
Ethernet controllers installed in your system. NICStart will detect any
additional controllers and prompt you to specify the controller being
addressed. You can see which controller is being accessed by watching
which LED lights during the Register test.

Note: If you are already running NICStart, go to step 3.
1. Insert Disk 1 into the floppy drive, and reboot.

2. NICStart launches automatically. The main menu displays.

3. Select Configuration Utility.

4. A scrolling list presents all of the configuration options and
their current settings. Use the arrow keys or your mouse to select
an option, and click [Edit] to view the valid parameter settings
     for the option.

5. Use the arrow keys or your mouse to select a setting, and click
[Save] to select it. Press <Esc> or click [Cancel] at any time to
     close the window.

6. When the Configuration Utility shows all the settings you want to
use, click [Exit] to return to the main menu.

7. When you select Exit to quit NICStart, you will be prompted to
reboot. Remove Disk 1 from the floppy drive and reboot your
     machine.

Troubleshooting
Use the following suggestions to deal with errors you may encounter
during diagnostics testing:
* If the computer contains both ISA and PCI buses, check for an IRQ or
other resource conflict between devices on each.
* Check that the controller is properly seated and is not touching any
  other controller.
* Try moving the controller to another slot or another computer.

If the problem persists, contact Compaq Technical Support; see page 2.

Installing the Driver
Each diskette's root directory contains README.TXT. This file reports
the location of all driver documentation files and provides product
release information. As directed by the README, you will find your
specific driver installation instructions in that driver's
subdirectory. For example, you will find documentation for the Novell
NetWare server driver in the \NWSERVER directory, along with the
NetWare server driver.
