Using the Controller Diagnostics Utility (Revised 5/2/97) Copyright 1997 Compaq Computer Corp. All rights reserved. ----------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------- Compaq Diagnostics allows you to verify that your network controller is functioning properly. The diagnostics may also identify a potential conflict with the settings on another controller installed in the computer. Diagnostics can perform three tests on the controller: 1. Register Test reports whether components on your controller are working correctly. 2. Internal Loopback Test verifies transmit and receive functions on the controller by returning the transmitted signal back to the controller internally. 3. External Loopback Test verifies transmit and receive functions of the controller by returning the transmitted signal back to the controller through a loopback plug. This test simulates the controller being attached to a hub. The Diagnostics External Loopback Test screen specifies the type of loopback plug that will work if you are using an RJ- 45 connector; a part number is specified to help you order it. System Requirements - The computer must have 530K of free memory. - The computer must not be running in protected mode (i.e., cannot be running Windows, EMM386, or other memory managers). You can, however, run HIMEM.SYS and drivers needed for a mouse. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Running the Diagnostic Tests To prepare for testing: 1. Make sure the computer is not connected to the network. 2. Reboot your computer in DOS. 3. Insert your diskette into the floppy drive, and change to the \DIAG subdirectory. 4. Type DIAG to start the diagnostics program. 5. Before you begin the tests, select View Network Controller Information to verify that your Compaq controller has been properly identified. If you do not see the controller you installed, try these corrective procedures: - Re-seat the controller in its slot. - Move the controller to another slot. - If the computer supports disabling slots on the PCI bus through the CMOS setup, make sure that the target slot is not disabled. If the controller still does not appear when you select View Network Controller Information, contact your reseller or Compaq Technical Support. Testing the controller: 1. Run Quick Check Diagnostics to test the controller's components. 2. Select Automatic Diagnostics if you want to run the test suite continuously or for a specified number of times. 3. Choose Interactive Diagnostics if you want to run one or more of the following individual tests for a single time: - Register Test: verifies that the controller's components are working - Internal Loopback Test: checks the transmit and receive paths on the controller - External Loopback Test: requires a loopback plug to simulate traffic external to the controller as if it were attached to a network cable - All of the Above: runs each of the previous tests If any of these tests fail, you will be advised of the test and the specific failure. See Troubleshooting for troubleshooting help. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Troubleshooting Verify that you have installed your controller correctly. If you still receive an error message, take the following steps: - If you are running the External Loopback Test, check that the loopback devices are firmly connected and that it is the type specified on the Diagnostics External Loopback Test screen. - Verify that the controller is not touching any other controller. - If the computer contains an ISA bus in addition to the PCI bus, check for an IRQ conflict between a controller on the ISA bus and the PCI bus. - (dual-ported controllers only) Check the computer manufacturer's documentation to make sure that your computer's BIOS supports PCI-to-PCI bridge technology. - Try moving the controller to another slot or another computer. If the problem persists, see the README.TXT file for instructions on contacting Compaq Technical Support.Download Driver Pack
