------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Seeing No Video

Based on which graphics card is installed, what drivers are being
used, and which graphics mode is being used, the Picture Adjust
utility (accessed through the Menu from the Config sub-menu) might
need to be used to configure the TV picture for your graphics card
and graphics mode.

Use the Picture Adjust facility's Video Position and Horizontal Adjust
controls so that it appears square and appears inside of the image area.

If no video is seen at all, use the Troubleshoot dialog (by pressing
the Troubleshoot button from Picture Adjust) and selecting No Video.
If this still does not show any video, please refer to the installation
manual again to ensure that the TV card connections to the graphics
card are proper. If this does show video, and it is skewed or does
not show in the image area, use the Video Position and Horizontal
Adjust controls to line up the image.

When configured properly, a gray-scale image that says "TV/VIDEO"
should show in the image area and should cover the background so
that no background color is seen on the edges.

Please refer to the other notes on graphics card compatibility in
this document for more information.

------------------------------------------------------------------
2. IBM Aptiva Issues

Please read this section, if you are encountering any of the
following issues on an IBM Aptiva system:

* Intermittant Audio - Sometimes the audio works, sometimes it does
  not.
* No video - When the TV is run, no video is seen, only the
background color is seen and the Picture Adjust has no effect.
* Garbage video - The Picture Adjust facility shows video "snow" or
when an image is captured/saved or loaded using the TV application,
the image looks like video "snow".

The IBM Aptiva has some specific configuration requirements which
are present when the system is pre-configured from the factory. If
the original configuration files (CONFIG.SYS, AUTOEXEC.BAT, or
SYSTEM.INI) have been modified, the system will need to be
re-configured to its initial state using IBM's Recovery Diskette.

------------------------------------------------------------------
3. No available IRQs (Newer Packard Bell PCI Computers)

If the TV/Video software displays a message indicating that it was not
able to detect its IRQ, or if you are experiencing video "freezing"
problems when changing channels, the system might not have any of the
TV500 IRQs available (10, 11, 12, 14, and 15). Some newer systems
(like some newer Packard Bell Pentium PCI systems with sound cards
and Enhanced IDE support) will be using IRQ 10 for the sound card,
IRQ 11 for miscellaneous PCI motherboard support, IRQ 12 for the
PS/2-style mouse, IRQ 14 for the hard drive IDE, and IRQ 15 for the
CD-ROM Enhanced IDE.

On these systems, one of the devices that comes with the computer
will need to be moved to an open IRQ below IRQ 10. For example, if
the sound card is using IRQ 10 and has an option to use IRQ 7 (*and*
IRQ 7 is open), then the sound card can be moved to IRQ 7 to free IRQ
10 for the TV/Video's use.

------------------------------------------------------------------
4. Audio controls not working

There are three ways to connect the TV/Video's sound output:

1. To the external Line-In of the computer's sound card.
2. To an internal Line-In/CD-ROM connector of the computer's sound card.
3. Directly to powered speakers.

The TV/Video board relies on the Line-In/CD-ROM mixing of the
computer's sound card (or built-in sound capabilities) to control the
TV's volume. Controlling this volume depends on which one of the
above methods is used and the sound card driver support included with
the sound system.

For systems connected to the external or internal Line-In or CD-ROM
connectors, the TV/Video card relies on the support of the MCI Auxiliary
port driver supplied with the sound card. This driver has multiple
channels, and the TV card defaults to channel 0. If the volume
controls are not grayed out on the TV/Video Remote, but they do not
adjust the volume level, the audio channel can be configured in the
Preferences dialog box in the Config sub-menu.

Using this dialog, each MCI Auxiliary port channel can be tested
until the volume controls of the remote actually control the volume.
If all of the channels are tested and the volume controls never have
an effect on the volume, it is possible that the sound card does not
support software control of the Line-In/CD-ROM volume through
utilities other than its own. In these cases, the sound card's
utilities to adjust the Line-In/CD-ROM volume will need to be used to
adjust the TV volume.

------------------------------------------------------------------
5. Audio controls are grayed out

If the sound card installed does not have the MCI Auxiliary port
driver support (found in the SYSTEM.INI file, in the [drivers]
section on the "AUX=" line), then the sound card's utilities to
adjust the Line-In/CD-ROM volume will need to be used to adjust the
TV volume.

The TV realizes that the MCI support is not available for this
volume control function and grays out the volume controls on the
remote control. The mute function (The speaker icon) is still
available since the TV/Video card can mute the volume independently.

If the TV/Video card's sound output is directly connected to powered
speakers, then the manual volume controls of the powered speakers
have to be used to control the TV's volume.

------------------------------------------------------------------
6. VRAM graphics card issues

Some newer VRAM graphics cards with Weitek, S3, ATI, or Number Nine
graphics controllers do not support the VESA feature connector when
used with their drivers. Sometimes, Windows must be configured with
the Standard VGA or Super VGA display drivers to enable the feature
connector.

Please consult the graphics card documentation for graphics modes
and drivers which enable VESA feature connector support. The VESA
feature connector is sometimes referred to as a pass-through or
loop-through connector in some graphics card documentation.

------------------------------------------------------------------
7. Jazz 16 and Logitech WaveMan 16 Sound Cards

The Jazz 16 and Logitech WaveMan 16 sound cards do not ship with
the MCI Auxiliary port driver necessary to allow the TV application
to change the Line-In/CD-ROM volume level. In this case, the sound
card mixer application should be used to change the TV volume.

If your sound card does not include this support, please contact them
to check for the availability for such support.

------------------------------------------------------------------
8. Paintbrush does not update the palette

On some graphics systems which does not support palette shadowing
correctly from the Vesa Local Bus (VLB) to the ISA bus, the
Paintbrush program will display 256-color bitmaps improperly. It is
not notifying the system of palette updates until the program exits.
If the program is restarted and the image is reloaded, it should
appear properly.

------------------------------------------------------------------
9. Using VCR as a tuner and Scan Channels

The Scan Channels facility takes advantage of the on-board tuner of
the TV board. If the tuner of a VCR is being used, and the TV board
is set to channel 3, the Scan Channels facility will most likely only
show one valid channel (3) since in this configuration, its TV tuner
is not being used.

------------------------------------------------------------------
10. STB Powergraph 64 Issues

On certain versions of the STB Powergraph 64, with the S3 Trio 64
graphics controller chip, the vertical sync (VSYNC) and the
horizontal sync (HSYNC) are wired backwards on the feature connector
interface. This results in absolutely no graphics or video when
these two boards are connected by the feature connector cable.

Please contact STB for a solution to this issue.

------------------------------------------------------------------
11. Alternative I/O Address Options

The TV/Video card will try to auto-detect valid I/O address space for
the different components on the board. However, in the rare case you
are having unexplained I/O conflicts and the TV/Video board thinks that
its has found a valid set of I/O addresses, try the entering the
following addresses for the specified components in the Control Panel
configuration dialog found in the Drivers icon of the Control Panel
application in the Main group box of the Program Manager:

   Video Processor Video DAC I2C
   --------------- --------- ---
   0x1560 0x1540 0x156A
   0x13A0 0x1380 0x13AA
   0x3B20 0x3B00 0x3B2A
   0x7560 0x7540 0x756A
   0x02A0 0x0280 0x02AA
   0x0270 0x0250 0x024A
   0x01A0 0x0180 0x01AA
   0x01C0 0x01A0 0x01CA
   0x01E0 0x01C0 0x01EA

------------------------------------------------------------------
12. Orchid Fahrenheit 1280, 1280 Plus Issues

These boards have incompatible feature connectors which result in no
graphics or video being displayed across the feature connector.

------------------------------------------------------------------
13. Reveal SC400 Rev.4R and SC600 Sound Card Configuration

To control the volume with the SC400 Rev.4R sound card, the volume
channel ID must be changed in the Preferences dialog box, selected
from the Menu in the Config sub-menu. Switch the ID to 2, select the
OK button, and then you should be able to use the TV's remote to
adjust the TV volume.

To control the volume with the SC600 sound card, the volume channel
ID must be changed in the Preferences dialog box, selected from the
Menu in the Config sub-menu. Switch the ID to 1, select the OK
button, and then you should be able to use the TV's remote to adjust
the TV volume.

------------------------------------------------------------------
14. Magitronics Issues

Some Magitronics systems (some with OPTI Vesa Local Bus [VLB]
chip sets) have ISA bus problems (where they violate ISA bus
timing specifications for I/O writes) which prevent the TV card from
working properly. On these systems, seeing video is intermittant
(all that is shown is the background color, in these cases) and/or
the graphics colors in Windows 256-color mode and 16-bit color mode
are incorrect.

Some possible work-arounds exist. First, consult your computer
system's manuel or the BIOS setup program to SPEED UP the ISA bus
clock. Normal settings found in the BIOS setup program might be
"Divide by 6", "Divide by 5", "Divide by 4", and "Divide by 3".
Choose the "Divide by 3" to minimize the ISA timing failure. This
normally fixes the issue.

------------------------------------------------------------------
15. VHS video noise at bottom of picture

When using the video input of the TV card with a VHS VCR, the bottom
lines in the image will look noisy. These can be cropped out using
the Zoom-in feature of the TV card. With the left mouse button
down, drag the rectangular region around the "good" part of the
image, leaving out the bottom "noisy" part. Double-click on the
shaded rectangular region to zoom-in.

------------------------------------------------------------------
16. Closed Caption Display With a Noisy TV Signal

The closed caption decoding and display can be affected by a weak TV
signal or a noisy TV signal coming from an antenna. In these cases,
the closed caption will not be displayed. Closed caption displays
well from a signal that originates from an antenna, if the channel is
not too noisy.

------------------------------------------------------------------
17. Black mouse cursor in 16-color modes

On some VGA controllers (some based on Cirrus Logic graphics
controllers), the entire mouse cursor will appear black in 16-color
(4-bit color) modes. This is a BIOS/graphics driver issue.
The graphics card is not passing the correct color information for
the mouse cursor across the feature connector in these modes. Please
consult your graphics card vendor for a possible resolution to this
issue.

------------------------------------------------------------------
18. "Freezing" Video or Out-of-sync Video

In certain cases where the video is "freezing" or out-of-sync when
changing channels or changing video sources, you might need to
manually select another Interrupt Request Line (IRQ) from the Control
Panel configuration dialog found in the Drivers icon of the Control
Panel application in the Main group box of the Program Manager.

This is normally caused by the TV software not being able to
accurately detect a valid and open IRQ line.

------------------------------------------------------------------
19. VGA Compatibility Issues

INTRO
=====
The TV/Video card was designed to be compatible with the largest number
of VGA boards in current PC's and that are availible in the market.

This will not prevent compatibility issues for everyone though. This
section is provided for TV/Video users to alleviate any compatibility
issues you may encounter.

PERFORMANCE YOU CAN EXPECT
==========================
The TV/Video is capable of 16-bit video overlay in following graphics
modes:
*  16 and 256 color for 640x480, 800x600, and 1024x768
   resolutions.
* 16-bit color for 640x480 and 800x600 resolutions (if the graphics
card supports this resolution across the VESA feature connector).

With the Audio/Video cable connectred, the TV/Video card displays the
data directly from the graphics board for any mode that the card can
not display video overlay. That includes the following graphics
modes:
* 1280x1024 resolution (at 4, 8, 16 and 24-bit color modes) and
  above.
* 24-bit color mode (at 640X480, 800X600, 1024x768 resolution
  and above)
* 16-bit color at 1024x768 resolution and above.

+ Engineering Notes for STB Power Graph 64

S3's Trio 64 does not comply with VESA'a specification for
the Feature Connector. S3 has a file available to reconfigure
the chips operation so that it will provide proper support.
This fix comes at the expense of reducing the Trio 64 from a
        64-bit to a 32-bit configuration.

Pre-release versions of this board had the Horizontal sync and the
Vertical sync signals swapped on the Feature Connector inter-
face. This will prevent any operation of the TV/Video with this
VGA card. Contact STB for resolution if you get a board with
        this layout problem.
