2. New In This Release Winter 2002

    * EZ-install
    The drivers and the client manager are now installed through a
    single application, known as EZ-install. The EZ-install will
    determine the Microsoft Windows version of your computer and
    will subsequently install and configure the drivers on your system.

    * Windows XP Support
    The drivers for Windows XP are provided in this release. Because
    Windows XP implements generic means to manage wireless network
    settings, such as the SSID and the encryption key, the Control Panel
    Applet is not needed and therefore not supplied for Windows XP.

    On pre-XP systems, the Client Manager allows the network
    configuration to be changed by opening the Control Panel Applet. On
    Windows XP systems the Client Manager will guide the user to the
    appropriate configuration screens in the operating system when
    selecting a new wireless network profile.

    * 802.1x Support
    The 802.1x protocol defines means to authenticate wireless stations
    and to distribute WEP encryption keys to authenticated stations. The
    client side authentication function, a.k.a. the supplicant, is
    provided by the Microsoft Windows XP operating system. The ORiNOCO
    Windows XP drivers and the ORiNOCO Access Points support the usage of
    802.1x.

    * WEP Weak Key Avoidance
    The key that is input to the WEP RC4 encryption algorithm consists of
    the secret key configured by the user (or via 802.1x) concatenated
    with the IV (Initialization Vector). The IV is determined by the
    transmitting station. By excluding certain IV values that would
    create so-called "weak keys", the weakness of WEP as described in
    Weaknesses in the Key Scheduling Algorithm of RC4" by Scott Fluhrer,
    Itsik Mantin and Adi Shamir, and demonstrated through the AirSnort
    program, are avoided.

    * Ultra High Density support.
    New values have been defined for "Distance between APs", to allow the
    creation of smaller cells: Minicell and Microcell. The Minicell has a
    range varying between 10 and 20 meters; the size of the Microcell
    varies between 5 and 10 meters.

    * Fragmentation for Performance Improvement under High Usage
    The client side will fragment large data frames so the access point
    is able to provide better performance when multiple clients are
    sending data simultaneously.

    * Control Panel Applet allows multiple cards to be installed
    On non-XP Windows systems the functionality of the Control Panel
    Applet (CPA) has been changed in order to allow more than one ORiNOCO
    client device to be installed at the same time. The CPA now maintains
    a global set of network profiles. Every active client device can be
    configured to use any of these network profiles. When more than one
    client device is active in a system, the Client Manager will prompt a
    dialog to select the client device to be managed.

    * Driver detects and selects most recent firmware
    Since the Fall 2001 release, the Windows drivers implement so-called
    tertiary firmware, which is downloaded during every driver
    initialization onto the card. This download mechanism has now been
    changed such, that the firmware download will only take place when
    the firmware in the driver is more recent than the firmware in the
    FlashROM on the card.

    * Agere-ization has been performed, involving
    Replacement of Lucent-related texts to Agere equivalent.
