The X2V90UPW.ZIP containes:
 
CRFLASH.ZIP......Compressed Flashrom Utility for Windows. Decompress it again. 
M0011_12.BIN.....Modem Firmware Version 6.02 (BIN File)
MDMCIR.INF.......Windows 95/98/NT4.0 Modem Device Driver Version 1.40  (7/14/98)
SERWVCIR.INF.....Windows 95/98/NT4.0 Serial Modem Wave Device Driver Version 1.6 (7/14/98)
X2V90UPW.TXT.....This guide.

Before you start:
=================

1. Make sure you have correct modem and Operating System. Download the DOS Flash Utility
   and run it under DOS if you use Windows NT or other OS.
 
2. Decompress all .ZIP files to a temporary folder, eg. c:\X2V9, which can be removed later
   to save hard disk space. WINZIP is one of unzip tools available from http://www.shareware.com.

Firmware Upgrade Procedure:
===========================

3. In Windows, close all open applications. Check if the Startup folder containes any 
   communication program using the modem. If it does, drag them out to desktop(move
   them back after you done all the programming) and restart the Windows.

4. Run setup.exe from the temporary folder to install Flashrom Utility.

5. After the Flashrom program installed, run cirflash.exe from the program menu
   to start the Flashrom Utility to load the Firmware Code (.BIN file).

6. Select BinFile M0011_12.BIN from the temporary folder containing the file.

7. Click on Download to program the Flash ROM.

8. Click on "Yes" to reboot the computer after the download finished.

Note:

Please allow a couple of minutes for the Flashrom utility to transfer the code 
to the modem. If the Flash process was interrupted by accident, run the Flash
Utility again.


Windows 95/98/NT4.0 Modem Driver Installation:
==============================================

9. When Windows restart, manually remove the modem device from Control Panel > 
   Modems property and use Windows' hardware wizard to detect the modem and 
   install the drivers with the new .INF files listed above. 

Trouble Shooting:
=================
Problem:
	The modem was working before, but now it no longer respond after the upgrade.

Solution:
	Reinstall the modem drivers. 

The following is for more technically oriented users: 

1). In Windows 95/98, Click Start, Run, regedit.

2). Remove the following keys from the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Enum\MODEMWAVE
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\control\MediaResources\wave\serwvdrv.drv <000X>

The <000X> is just a placeholder. Note the number in the bracket < >, it is used to 
identify the third keys you will delete.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Class\Media\000X

3). You can also find these keys by searching for Cirrus in the registry. Once you found 
these three keys, delete them so that you are sure that the modem drivers are really
installed properly.

4). Use Windows Explorer to look at the hiden \WINDOWS\INF directory. Remove two hiden
files drvidx.bin and drvdata.bin .  Then remove the .INF files that begin with "OEM" that
correspond to MDMCIR.INF and SERWVCIR.INF. Use a text editor to open the .INF file to make
sure it is the previously installed Cirrus Logic Modem INF file before remove it. This will
force Windows 95 to look for new .INF files without taking any shortcuts.

5). Install the modem drivers using new .INF files.  Click on Start, Settings, Control 
Panel, Modems.  If your modem drivers were installed and working before, check the checkbox
that says "Don't detect modem; select from list", then Windows will rebuild the database, 
otherwise, do not check the checkbox and let Windows to detect modem and new hardware.
Press "Have Disk", point it to the directory containes the new modem .INF files.  Then 
several modem "Cirrus 56Kbps Internal (CL-MD5650) Modem" is displayed. Press Next. Select 
the appropriate COM port if you did not select to detect the modem. Then Windows will 
discover the Wave Device for Voice Modem. Re-enter the directory containes the new .INF 
file if Windows ask again. Click on OK to continue. Done.

How To Update Drivers Manually

After your driver has been downloaded, follow these simple steps to install it.

  • Expand the archive file (if the download file is in zip or rar format).

  • If the expanded file has an .exe extension, double click it and follow the installation instructions.

  • Otherwise, open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start menu and selecting Device Manager.

  • Find the device and model you want to update in the device list.

  • Double-click on it to open the Properties dialog box.

  • From the Properties dialog box, select the Driver tab.

  • Click the Update Driver button, then follow the instructions.

Very important: You must reboot your system to ensure that any driver updates have taken effect.
