Xircom 56K GlobalAccess Modem Products V.90 FIRMWARE RELEASE Version 2.90 and 32-bit Update Utility April 26, 2001 ================================================================= This release includes the latest version of Xircom's Firmware (version 2.90) and the latest version of Xircom's firmware update utility which is used to update your Xircom modem with this version of firmware. This release supports the following Xircom products: - CreditCard Ethernet 10/100+Modem 56 (CEM56) - CreditCard Modem 56-GlobalACCESS (CM-56G) - RealPort Ethernet 10/100+Modem 56 (REM56G-100) - RealPort Ethernet Modem 56 (REM56G-10) - RealPort Modem 56-GlobalACCESS (RM56G) - RealPort2 Modem 56 GlobalACCESS (R2M56GA) CONTENTS ======== 1) Update Overview 2) Release Notes / Known Limitations 3) What's New in the 2.90 Release 4) V.90 Configuration and Use Information 5) Firmware Update Instructions 6) Troubleshooting and Machine Specific Notes 7) Xircom Technical/Sales Support 1) UPDATE OVERVIEW =============== The version of the update utility included in this download set is a 32-bit utility intended for use on computers running Windows 95/98, Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000 or Windows Millennium. If you are using MS-DOS or Windows 3.x, use of this utility is not supported. The update utility is designed to update a Xircom modem with the latest version of firmware. It is recommended that AC power be supplied to your laptop to ensure that continuous power is available. 2) RELEASE NOTES / KNOWN LIMITATIONS ================================= In order to achieve 56Kbps connects, there can be only one digital to analog conversion between the connecting modems. Also, the modems at both ends of the call must be PCM compatible to achieve 56K speeds; if they are not, they will negotiate a standard v.34 rate. Current FCC regulations limit download speeds of the modem to 53Kbps. Several factors exist that can limit the modem's performance. Factors that contribute to lower connection rates are: -Noisy line conditions on individual calls -Dirty or faulty wiring -Poor connection ability of the modem/fax machine on the other side -The Bulletin Board Service, Internet Service Provider or On-Line Service Provider may be forwarding the call to another location (long distance) to extend their local calling areas. To improve your modem performance, try connecting to and from different locations. Known Limitations ----------------- -Class 2 Fax using GSM connection kits is not supported in this release. Class 1 Fax is supported. -Attempts to send a fax while using a GSM connection kit may result in a "no dial tone" error, or the fax may not complete. 3) WHAT'S NEW IN THE 2.90 RELEASE ============================== This release of firmware includes the following features and improvements: -Support for the most recent Xircom GSM phone kits has been added. -A condition that resulted in the modem failing to respond a short time after initial use in some environments has been corrected. -Some country specific changes and corrections have been implemented for various Asia Pacific countries. -A DTE rate of 230400 is now supported. Some operating systems may not provide a rate option of 230400 via the usual drop-down list. If a DTE rate of 230400 is desired it can be invoked via the +IPR command as follows: -In a terminal application, enter AT+IPR=230400 -For use with dial-up networking, add +IPR=230400 to the initialization string. For example, in Windows 9x, go to Control Panel > Modems. Select the Xircom modem and click Properties > Connection > Advanced, and enter the command in the Extra settings box. Note that the system may not report a rate of 230400 due to operating system limitations. Features/Improvements included in previous releases --------------------------------------------------- -Improved EIA loop detection and compensation -Improved power drop detection and compensation -Improved v.90 train/retrain stability; uses multiple v.90 retries before v.34 fallback; chooses low v.90 rather than v.34 connect rate where possible -Improved LAPM connection reliability -Echo canceler technology has been added to improve difficult connections -Improvements to driver for Nokia phones have been made -PDC phones are now supported -GSM code has been improved to enable proper phone initialization when power management is enabled on the computer (applies specifically to modem-only cards) -A condition that caused some country settings to display incorrectly has been fixed. 4) V.90 CONFIGURATION AND USE INFORMATION ====================================== S109 register ------------- The firmware contained in this update is designed to initially attempt to make a v.90 connection, and then fall back to K56flex if the host being dialed does not support v.90. However, the host being dialed must support v.90 autodetect in order for a v.90 connection to be initiated by default. At this point in time, many v.90 hosts do not yet support autodetect. In such cases, it will be necessary to issue an ATS109=2 command to the modem in order to force a v.90 connection. Please note that if this command is used and a v.90 connection is not achieved, the modem will fall back directly to v.34. When S109=2, fall back from v.90 to K56Flex is disabled. To set this value back to the default issue an ATS109=1 command. In summary, the values of this register and the resultant behavior are: S109=1 (default) - Negotiates initially at v.90 if host supports v.90 autodetect. If host does not support v.90 autodetect or does not support v.90 at all, will negotiate back to K56flex. S109=2 - Forces v.90 for PCM connects. If host does not support v.90, falls directly back to v.34. Changing the value of the S109 register can be implemented via the following means: -When using a terminal emulator program, enter ATS109=n (where n is the value desired). -When using with a specific communications application, add S109=n (where n is the value desired) to the modem dial string invoked by the application. Consult the application documentation if you are uncertain about where to change the dial string values. 5) FIRMWARE UPDATE INSTRUCTIONS ============================ Follow these instructions to update your Xircom modem to the latest Firmware: 1. Prior to running the utility, verify the following items: If the Laptop has a Plug and Play OS option in the System Setup (CMOS), it will need to be turned off. Once the update utility has completed, this option can be re- enabled. Verify in System Setup (CMOS) that the PCMCIA controller is set to PCIC compatible (not CardBus mode) if such a choice is available. After the update is complete, this option can be set back to CardBus mode if desired. Please see documentation provided with your Laptop for instructions on accessing the System Setup if this is necessary in your case. 2. Close any applications that are running. Windows 95 / Windows 98 / Windows 2000 / Windows Millennium ----------------------------------------------------------- 1. Boot the system normally. The Xircom adapter must be properly installed and functioning correctly prior to proceeding. 2. Create a new folder on your hard disk and copy the Xircom firmware upgrade download file to this folder. 3. Click Start, Run. Browse to the folder that contains the download file.
