 *  Introduction  *
 ******************
We have conducted a wide range of tests to ensure that our adapters
are compatible with the widest range of PCs possible. As a company, we
are equally committed to customer satisfaction and timely response to
the needs and concerns of our customers.

The ELSA LAN PCI provides Power Management capability. It is compliant
with the Network Device Class Power Management Specifications Rev 1.0, ACPI
Specifications Rev 1.0, and the PCI Bus Power Management Interface
Specifications 1.0. In addition, it supports remote Wake-up capability
used to power up a remote sleeping station on the network.

 There are several files and sub-directories on the diskette.
 Each directory name corresponds with the name of the
 network operating systems.

 *  About Auto-Negotiation  *
 ****************************

A. Four (4) Operating Speeds
========================
The ELSA LAN PCI Adapter is capable of transmitting and receiving
data at four different speeds: 10Mbps, 10Mbps Full-Duplex, 100Mpbs
and 100Mbps Full-Duplex.

B. Link Partners
========================
100BaseTX and 10BaseT networks use UTP(unshielded twisted-pair)/STP cable.
Each cable has two ends. Each end is used for connecting to a network device.

Remember that both the ELSA LAN PCI and the device to which it is attached
("Link Partner") must work together at the same speed.

C. Before Installing Driver, Know The Attached Device
=====================================================
Users must first install the proper driver from the diskette onto
their operating systems. Each driver is set to Auto-Negotiation
mode (N-WAY), which automatically detects line speed and
mode (refer to D and E below).

Normally, users do not have to set a driver's specific line speed and
mode to hook up the attached device except when the link partner is a
dedicated Full-Duplex device (refer to F below).

D. Five Connection Types
========================
The two (2) key settings are line speed and operation mode. A device
attached to the ELSA LAN PCI (such as repeater/hub, switching hub,
switching bridge or another adapter) will have one of the
following five connection types:

 1. Auto-Negotiation ("N-Way", "Auto-sense", "Auto-recognition")
 2. SPEED= 100Mbps & MODE= Half-Duplex
 3. SPEED= 10Mbps & MODE= Half-Duplex
 4. SPEED= 100Mbps & MODE= Full-Duplex
 5. SPEED= 10Mbps & MODE= Full-Duplex

E. Auto-Negotiation for Most Cases (Default on each driver)
===========================================================
If the attached device is in Connection Type 1, 2 or 3, use the adapter's
driver default is Auto-Negotiation model.

In this mode each time it loads, the driver will be able to check
the capabilities of the "Link Partner" and automatically set
the optimal speed and operating mode.

F. For Dedicated Full-Duplex Link Partner
=========================================
If the operating mode of the adapter's "Link Partner" is set to forced
Full-Duplex, at either 100Mbps or 10Mbps (Connection Type 4 or 5),
Auto-Negotiation mode of the adapter will not work (Refer to G. below).
Users must set the "MODE" and "SPEED" in the operating system's driver to
the same values as the "Link Partner".

 ********************
 *  Wake-up on LAN  *
 ********************

The ELSA LAN PCI supports power management mechanism. It complies with
the ACPI Specification Rev 1.0, the Network Device Class Power
Management Specification Rev 1.0, and PCI Bus Power Management
Interface Specification Rev 1.0. In addition, it also supports Wake-up
LAN (WOL) which is the feature of AMD's Magic Packet(tm) technology.
With this function the ELSA LAN PCI can receive a wake-up request
while installed in a remote sleeping station.

The ELSA LAN PCI's PCB is equipped with a three (3) pin WOL socket.
This socket is used for attaching the ELSA LAN PCI to the computer's
motherboard. This cable is not needed when the adapter is installed
into a system with PCI 2.2 compliant slots.

Before Installing the WOL Function, Make Sure:
* The standby power is equal to, or greater than, 600 mA
* The Operating System supports WOL

Then, Enable Wake On LAN function. To do this, get into your
computer's BIOS setup screen. Enable "the Wake On LAN function"
(probably located in the Power Management section), if present, and
choose the save and exit setup option to boot the computer.

 **********************************
 * Driver Installation on Windows *
 **********************************

1) Boot up the system.
2) The system will auto-detect the adapter and the 'Add New Hardware
   Wizard' dialog box will appear. Click "Next".
3) Select " ELSA LAN PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter", and start to copy the
   files to your system.
4) When the driver installation is complete, restart Windows.

 ********************************
 * Driver Installation on Linux *
 ********************************

Modern versions of the Linux kernel should already have a suitable
driver. Please choose the driver for Davicom 9102A based cards, named
'dmfe', e. g. in SuSE 8.1.

For older distributions, please unpack the file Linux/ELSA.tar.gz with
'tar -xvz -C /tmp -f linux/ELSA.tar.gz' and follow the instructions in
/tmp/ELSA/linux/readme.txt.

 ***********************
 *  Technical Support  *
 ***********************

If you have any questions about installing or using the adapter drivers,
check the README.TXT or *.TXT in the directory corresponding to your
installed driver.

If you need further assistance or technical support, please contact your
authorized distributor or dealer.
