3Com (R) Corporation EtherDisk (R) Diskette for the OfficeConnect Fast Ethernet NIC (3CSOHO100-TX) Troubleshooting Information If the NIC diagnostic tests fail, the NIC may not be defective. Check the following: 1. Make sure that the NIC is completely seated in its PCI slot. Review the installation instructions in the user guide. 2. If you are running the NIC Echo test, make sure that the NIC is securely connected to a properly cabled network that has no more than two computers connected. Running the Echo test while connected to an active network with more than two computers can cause intermittent failures. 3. If you are configuring the I/O base address or the interrupt request level, make sure that the settings you choose for these parameters do not conflict with any other peripheral or software programs installed in your PC. For a list of system resources commonly used by other peripherals, select Commonly Used Interrupt and I/O Base Addresses from the DOS Configuration and Diagnostic submenu. 4. Make sure that the configuration setting for the media type is correct. (For example, if you're connecting to a 10 Mbps Ethernet network, make sure that the media type is set to 10 Mb/s). 5. Check the LNK (link) LED on the NIC. The LNK LED should be checked only during or after the diagnostic tests have been run. The LNK LED lights when there is a correct and active connection between the NIC and the hub or switch. 6. The PCI slot in the computer may be defective. Install the NIC in another slot and run the diagnostic tests again. 7. The PC in which the NIC is installed may be defective. Install the NIC in a known functioning PC and run the tests again. 8. Replace the failed NIC with a known working NIC with the same configuration. Run the test again. If the second NIC fails, something is probably wrong with the test environment, not with the NIC.
