Installing the SoundBlaster Vibra 16 ISA sound card on a Windows XP machine.

Enviroment:

Dell Dimension XPS R450
Windows XP Professional w/SP1a w/RU1 (roll up 1, its just extra updates)
256mb SDRAM
16gb HDD

You may have noticed that Windows XP identifies the sound card as;

"Unimodem Half-Duplex Audio Device", bad news, it does not work.

You may have searched around for drivers, only to find nothing.

You may have tried drivers that were not intended for the card or Xp, did not work.

I have found a solution. The card in previous versions of Windows used the
SoundBlaster 16 audio driver. If you go to www.soundblaster.com and search for
drivers for the SoundBlaster 16 for XP, nothing. Windows natively supports it.

What you must do is a manual installation.

Here is a step by step procedure to get it working;

You may want to remove the card from your system prior to doing this, just to be sure
it is a SoundBlaster Vibra 16. There will be a big chip that says "Vibra 16" on the card.
If you see that, proceed. If you're all out of options, proceed anyways.

1) Click START, SETTINGS, CONTROL PANNEL (classic mode)

2) Open ADD HARDWARE

3) A window will appear, click NEXT

4) It will do a search & ask a question, click YES then NEXT

5) It will bring up a window with a list of items, scroll to the bottom and select
   ADD NEW HARDWARE DEVICE, click NEXT

6) It will give you an option of searching or manually selecting, select
   MANUALLY SELECTING, click NEXT

7) It will bring up a list of hardware device, select SOUND, VIDEO AND GAME CONTROLLERS, click NEXT

8) In the MANUFACTURER window select CREATIVE TECHNOLOGY LTD, in the MODEL window select
   SOUND BLASTER 16 or AWE32 or COMPATIBLE (WDM), click NEXT

9) It will bring up a pretty much useless window telling you the hardware that is being installed,
   click NEXT

10) It will install, once it has completed, click FINISH.

You may need to restart your computer, you may not. Try playing an MP3 or some kind of sound file to determine if the installation was successful. It should have been.

Hopefully this will save you from having to buy a new sound card. The one you have is just fine, unless your an audiopedophile.

I have to attach the following disclaimer for the retards who somehow manage to format their harddrives with important data on them and then want to try and sue me. This is a piece of cake
procedure that any half brained moron can do. I tried searching for the information on how to do this and could not find anything. This is just my contribution to humanity, however small it may be.
A decade old sound card, that's really gonna save me. Read below.

This is very UNRISKY operation, yet I take no responsibility for any damages you do to your computer. This is just a suggestion, if you do not know what you're doing, go to a professional.
Do not do this on a work computer where you will get in trouble if you screw it up.
