This a Frequently Asked Question about the Euroviva modem

>What can I use as Init String ?
Your modem is compatible with most popular DOS and Windows software packages. If you are familiar with a certain package, you should be able to continue using it; however since each package makes different assumptions about the way modems work, you may need to reconfigure your software. Below are some general guidelines.
Here are some general purpose setup options for data communications software. Keep in mind that different services will have different requirements. When in doubt, contact the system operator of the on-line system you wish to call for specific modem setup requirements.

Modem Type: Hayes compatible, Zoom V.33I, Supra Express288 or Generic 28.8 Data Fax
Initialization string:			AT&F&C1&D2
Max Baud Rate:			115200
Start Bits, Parity,Stop Bits:	8,None, 1 (or 7, Even, 1)
Flow Control:			Hardware (RTS/CTS)
Terminal Emulation:		ANSI

Some programs may require special characters (^m, / etc.) at the end of the initialization string.
If you need an "init" string with error correction disabled try: AT &F &C1 &D2 &Q6
If a baud rate (also called port speed or DTE rate) of 115200 is unavailable use 57600 or lower speeds. This setting affects communications between your PC and modem. Over phone lines, your modem auto-adjusts to the highest mutually compatible speed of the remote modem.

If you have problems connecting or downloading files from popular on-line services try suggested init strings 1,2 or 3:

AT&F&C1&D2^M for AOL or Compuserve

AT&F&C1&D2&Q6^M for AOL or Compuserve with error correction disabled.

For a lower speed connection use AT&F&C1&D2+MS=xxx
where xxx is 11,1,19200,28800^M for 28.8 connections
		xxx is 10,1,1200,14400^M for 14.4 connections
		xxx is 2,1,1200,2400^M for 2400bit/sec connections

For Voice Mail application software, choose Rockwell ICS or Rockwell Voice in the setup options.

For Fax software use Class 1 or Class 2 Fax options. Do not use Class 2.0 (ie. Class 2 is OK, Class 2.0 is not!)

Be sure to set your modem and software to the same COM port for proper operation.

Obtain the phone number, parity, baud rate & stop bits of the computer you are calling and specify them in the setup or dial screen. Enter any dialing prefixes as needed - 9 to dial out of most business PBXs, 1 for long distance etc.)
If you're replacing a modem, you may have to reconfigure your existing communications software.

>What are the available IRQ settings for the modem?
EuroViVa CommCenter/28-SP supports IRQ 3, 4, 5 and 7

>If Windows 95 asks me for a manufacturer provided disk, which disk do I use ?
The files necessary for Windows 95 (.INF files) can be found on the Gateway 2000 System Driver CD.

>Can I use my existing fax communications software?
As long as your existing fax software is Type Class 1 or Class 2, it works with your modem.

>Are there certain times when I will not be able to achieve a connection rate of 28.8?
CPI designs and builds one of the most reliable modems in the world, but line conditions in some areas do not allow consistent 28.8 connections. In such areas, your CPI modem adjusts to these conditions and connects at the next best speed. Also, the modem you are trying to connect to on the other end must also support 28.8 in order to achieve a 28.8 connection.

>Why doesn't the modem answer the phone?
Make sure that auto-answer is enabled in the communications package you are using

>Why do double characters appear on the screen when I'm typing modem commands ?
Local echo may be enabled on your modem. To disable local echo type ATE0.

>Why doesn't the modem respond when I type AT commands or try to fax?
Make sure that the COM port and IRQ settings for your communications software matches the COM port and IRQ settings for your modem.

>Does the CPI Modem support split transmission rates?
The EuroViVa CommCenter/28-SP modem supports split transmission rates. Split transmission rates are a V.34 standard. All V.34 modems support this feature. V23 standard also support split rates (1200/75 or 75/1200 bps).

>Why do I get the message No DIAL TONE on the screen?
Check that your phone cord is plugged into the jack on the back of the modem and that it is correctly connected to the wall jack.

>Does this modem have flash memory?
No, this modem does not have flash memory.

>What resolution are fax images ?
The standard resolution for faxes is 3.85 scan lines/mm (approx. 98 dpi vertically) with 1728 pixels across a standard scan line of 215 mm (approx. 204 dpi horizontally).
The optional "fine" resolution is 7.7 scan lines/mm (approx. 196 dpi vertically) with the same horizontal resolution.
Many Group III fax machines use non-standard frames to negotiate higher resolutions (typically 300x300 dpi and 400x400 dpi) with other fax machines by the same manufacturer.
Two fax machines (or modems) must negotiate a common resolution, page width, and page length before sending each page. The standard requires that all Group III fax machines suppport at least standard resolution and A4 size so that common ground can always be found.
Extensions to the Group III standard to support these higher resolutions in a standard way have been proposed. Their current status is not known.

>Modem not found
Possible causes :
* COM port I/O conflict,
* COM port IRQ conflict,
* software setting does not match with modem setting
* with Windows 3.x check the port setting
* with Windows 95, check the modem ressources
* modem need to be reseated into ISA slot

>Modem does not respond
Possible cause :
* see modem not found

>No Dial Tone
Possible causes :
* Phone cable unplugged
* Defective phone line, check with a regular handset
* not a analog phone line
* PBX dial tone not in the frequency range required by the modem (depending on the country)
* not a standard wiring on the wall plug

>Modem does not dial
Possible cause
* See No Dial Tone

>Modem dials but nothing happen
Possible causes :
* the phone line does not support DTMF dialing, use pulse dialing
* the phone line does not support pulse dialing, use DTMF dialing

>Modem responds "Blacklisted" or "DELAY xx:xx:xx"
Possible causes :
* In many European country, unsucessfully dialed numbers are listed into a black list, the modem cannot redial the phone number right away.

>Mouse locks up
Possible cause
* Generally, an IRQ I/O conflict, see 3.01 Modem not found

>Modem does not answer
Possible causes :
* auto answer is disabled in the communication software
* phone cable broken or unplugged
