PowerVault 122T SDLT320 Autoloader Firmware Update Instructions for Windows


Prior to upgrading:

- Ensure the tape drive is unloaded and the drive is in an idle state 
	(stop service for all backup applications).


 NOTE: x: represents the system root drive letter.
 
Upgrading the PowerVault 122T SDLT320 Autoloader Firmware 

Extract instructions:

	The content of this download contains firmware to upgrade both 
	the autoloader and the tape drive. 
 
Download the upgrade utility:

1. Download and run the file “R93965.exe” from a Microsoft Windows Based System.  

	This will create the directory: x:\dell\drivers\R93965\ containing the files:

readme.htm  -  installation instructions in HTML format
readme.txt  - installation instructions in text format
releasenotes.txt – release notes in text format
sdlt1_v82_del-3.img  – Autoloader Tape Drive Firmware image file
PV-122T_CHANGER_J12R.IMAGE – Autoloader Fimware image file
PVtools.exe – the program to upgrade the drive using windows

	IMPORTANT:  If you have backup applications running services such as Backup Exec
	or Arcserve you should stop the services from running at this time. For help on 
	stopping the services see your Software Documentation.

Windows 2000/2003 Instructions:

1. Go to the directory x:\dell\drivers\R93965.  Click  PVtools.exe.  The software will 
search for all of the supported tape drives that are attached to the system. Once the 
search is complete, the PVtools window will be displayed. The default tab will be Status.  
The current version will be displayed first in Decimal and then in HEX.   
	
	Note:   After the firmware upgrade takes place the tape drive firmware version 
		displayed in decimal will be 82.82 = V82  and the hex value will be 52.52. 
		If 82.82 is already displayed a firmware upgrade is not required.  
		The autoloader firmware will be J12R.

To upgrade firmware:

1.  In the device window highlight the SDLT320 Tape Drive that you wish to update. 
 
2.  Click the Updates tab and click Update Device Flash Code. 
  
3.  Point to the firmware file sdlt1_v82_del-3.img found in the x:\dell\drivers\R93965\ directory.
  
4.  A message will appear.  “The firmware update will take several minutes. Continue?”  Click OK.  
    Click OK again to the “do not remove drive power” warning message.      

    CAUTION : Do not remove power to the tape drive during this process.
5.  When completed, you will see a message that reads, “Your drive has been successfully upgraded.
    Please close Pvtools and scan the bus or reboot your server prior to you next backup. Continue?” 
    Click OK. 

6.  Click on the Status tab again.  The new firmware 82.82 decimal / 52.52 hex will be displayed. 

To update the autoloader firmware, select the autoloader in the device list and repeat 
steps 2 through 4. Point to the location of  PV-122T_CHANGER_J12R.IMAGE image file when 
prompted for firmware path. 

	Note:   Pvtools knows that the firmware has been updated but the OS and backup software do not. 
		Either rescan the bus in device manager until the tape drive disappears and reappears then 
		restart backup software services or simply reboot your server.  Do this prior to the next 
		scheduled backup.

How To Update Drivers Manually

After your driver has been downloaded, follow these simple steps to install it.

  • Expand the archive file (if the download file is in zip or rar format).

  • If the expanded file has an .exe extension, double click it and follow the installation instructions.

  • Otherwise, open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start menu and selecting Device Manager.

  • Find the device and model you want to update in the device list.

  • Double-click on it to open the Properties dialog box.

  • From the Properties dialog box, select the Driver tab.

  • Click the Update Driver button, then follow the instructions.

Very important: You must reboot your system to ensure that any driver updates have taken effect.
