DELL PowerVault 120T-DDS4 Autoloader Firmware Version L2u3 Update instructions for Windows NT, 2000/2003, and Red Hat Linux

This upgrade adds the latest performance enhancing features to the 
PowerVault 120T DDS4 Autoloader.  This release will update the drive code to level L2u3.  
Note: To update the PV120T the device must be attached to one of the following OSs – Windows 2000/2003, NT4, and Red Hat Linux 
Prior to upgrading:
- Ensure that the SCSI bus is in an idle state 
(stop and or hold all backup applications).

 
NOTE: x: represents the system root drive letter.
 
Upgrading the PowerVault 120T DDS4 Autoloader Firmware:
Download the upgrade utility:
1. Download and run the file R82343.exe from a Microsoft Windows Based System.  This will create the directory: x:\dell\drivers\R82343\Windows containing the files:
PV120T_L2u3.exe – firmware upgrade tool
tsl11000_L2u3.gbf– firmware file
 PTISCSI.DLL – dll used by firmware tool
PTIDLL.dll – dll used by firmware tool

Upgrade your firmware:
 
CAUTION : Do not remove power to the tape drive during this process.Windows NT4/2000/2003 Instructions:

1a. Go to the directory x:\dell\drivers\R82343\Windows.  Click  PV120T_L2u3.exe.   Wait about 30 seconds for the application window to appear.   Click on agree.  
1b. If the device does not appear please close and reopen the firmware upgrade application. 
2.  Highlight the device in the device lists and select Upgrade Firmware.  The firmware will automatically be uploaded to the device.  There is no need to point to any firmware files.  This utility is specifically written to upload the L2u3 version of firmware.  
3.  After the firmware is done downloading, the lights on the drive will stop blinking.  Firmware revision level can be checked on the drive by pressing and holding the ‘select’ button on the front bezel.     Hit the enter button on ‘version’.  It should read L2u3.  You should also now see version L2u3 in the firmware upgrade application window. 
4.  Cycle power on server and autoloader. 

Red Hat Linux Instructions

NOTE: There are several known issues with the default Adaptec SCSI host driver aic7xxx included in RedHat AS 2.1.  Dell recommends that users upgrade to the aic7xxx_mod driver that resolves many of these issues.  The aic7xxx_mod driver is automatically installed on AS 2.1 systems, so no RPMs are needed.  To use it:
1. Edit the /etc/modules.conf file so that references to aic7xxx are replaced by aic7xxx_mod
2. Remake initrd
3. Reboot server


Download the upgrade utility:
1. Download and run the file R82343.exe from a Microsoft Windows based system. This will create the directory: x:\dell\drivers\R82343\Linux

2. Copy the \Linux directory to the computer connected to the tape drive.

Upgrade your firmware:

1. If running a graphical interface (GNOME, KDE, etc.) open a command line window.  
Type # /proc/scsi/scsi  to make sure the autoloader and drive are seen. 

2. Use the firmware upgrade utility to flash the firmware. 
                 Usage: PV120Tfwu <logical device name> -f <filename>
                 Example:
                 # ./PV120Tfwu /dev/sg0 –f  PV120T_L2u3.gbf
                         where sg0 is the SCSI generic logical device name given by 
                         the system.  The name of your device might differ. (sgX)
                 SONY tape device detected. 
                 SONY TSL-11000 Revision:L0u6
                 Firmware file size = 926832 bytes
                 Upgrading tape device firmware.
                 Warning!! Do Not Power Off Tape Device!!
                  This process can take a few minutes. 
                  Firmware upgrade complete.  
                  You must reboot your server for upgrade to complete. 
 
                  Note:  If sg0 does not work for the device name, try incrementing the 0 by 1.
                                           IE: sg0, sg1, sg2, sg3

	CAUTION : Do not remove power to the tape drive during this process.

3.  Cycle power on the server and autoloader.

How To Update Drivers Manually

After your driver has been downloaded, follow these simple steps to install it.

  • Expand the archive file (if the download file is in zip or rar format).

  • If the expanded file has an .exe extension, double click it and follow the installation instructions.

  • Otherwise, open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start menu and selecting Device Manager.

  • Find the device and model you want to update in the device list.

  • Double-click on it to open the Properties dialog box.

  • From the Properties dialog box, select the Driver tab.

  • Click the Update Driver button, then follow the instructions.

Very important: You must reboot your system to ensure that any driver updates have taken effect.
