PowerVault 100T-DDS4 Tape Drive Firmware Update instructions for Windows, Linux, and Netware for Firmware revision 825B and 911D

This upgrade adds the latest performance enhancing features to the
PowerVault 100T DDS4 tape drive. This release will update the drive code level to 825B or 911D depending on the version of Firmware your drive currently has.

Prior to upgrading:
- Ensure the tape drive is unloaded and the SCSI bus is in an idle state
(stop and or hold all backup applications).

NOTE: x: represents the system root drive letter.

**************If you require further information, please consult the User Manual.pdf which includes screenshots and instructions for diagnostic testing.****************

Windows 2000/2003 Instructions
------------------------------

Download the upgrade utility:

1. Download and run the file "R84132.exe" from a Microsoft Windows Based System. This will create the directory: x:\dell\drivers\R84132\Windows

IMPORTANT: If you have back up applications running services such as Backup Exec or Arcserve you must stop the services from running at this time or the application will not see the Tape Device. For help on stopping the services see your Software Documentation.

2. Go to the directory x:\dell\drivers\R84132\Windows. Click TapeRx. The software will search for all the supported tape drives that are attached to the system. Once the search is complete, the diagnostic Windows will be displayed, showing one tab for each supported tape drive found. Included are the drive type, target ID, drive model number and firmware revision level.

Note: If the firmware version on your drive is a version 8XXX then you require firmware image file V825B052.bin. If your drive has firmware version 9XXX then you will need the firmware image file V911D052.bin.

Upgrade your firmware:

3. Click the tab that represents the tape drive you wish to work on, then select the "Upgrade Firmware" option on the left side.

4. Click the "Browse for Firmware File" on the right side. Go to directory x:\dell\drivers\R84132\Windows, and open the appropriate version depending on the above note.

5. Click the "Upgrade Firmware" button. The program will give you a message about the length of time it will take. The LED's will begin to flash on the drive when it begins the process.

CAUTION : Do not remove power to the tape drive during this process.

6. When completed, you will see a message that reads, "Firmware Version 825B or 911D installed," depending on the version that was installed.

Red Hat Linux Instructions
--------------------------
Supported versions are 7.x, 8.x, 9.x, AS 2.1 and ES 3.0

**NOTE: There are several known issues with the default Adaptec SCSI host driver aic7xxx included in RedHat AS 2.1. Dell recommends that users upgrade to the aic7xxx_mod driver that resolves many of these issues. The aic7xxx_mod driver is automatically installed on AS 2.1 systems, so no RPMS are needed. To use it:
	1. Edit the /etc/modules.conf file so that references to aic7xxx are replaced by aic7xxx_mod
	2. Remake initrd
	3. Reboot server

Download the upgrade utility:

1. Download and run the file "R84132.exe" from a Microsoft Windows based system. This will create the directory: x:\dell\drivers\R84132\Linux

2. If running a graphical interface (GNOME, KDE, etc.) open a command line Windowsdow.

3. Put the \Linux directory and the firmware images (V825B052.bin and V911D052.bin) into a directory on the computer connected to the tape drive.

4. Go to the Directory where you have put the files. The firmware version and device id need to be determined by typing in "./TapeRx.lx show". This will show all of the devices recognized by the program. Take note of the device id assigned to the drive and the firmware version because this information will be used in upgrading the device

Note: If the firmware version on your drive is a version 8XXX then you require firmware image file V825B052.bin. If your drive has firmware version 9XXX then you will need the firmware image file V911D052.bin.

Upgrade your firmware:

5. At the system console screen, type in:
./TapeRx.lx upgrade -id:x -f:Vxxxx052.bin

Note: The "x" for the device id and firmware file name are determined by the "./TapeRx.lx show" command. The "x's" in the firmware filename will depend on what drive you have, as mentioned in the above note.

6. The program will give you a message about the length of time it will take. The LED's will begin to flash on the drive when it begins the process.

CAUTION : Do not remove power to the tape drive during this process.

7. At the logger screen, when the program is completed, there will be a message that reads "Firmware Version 825B or 911D installed," depending on which firmware used.

*****************************************************************
Warning!: On certain systems this utility might hang.
The issue has been seen on PE1550, 6600, and 6650 servers.
The cause is the loading of a faulty QLCSFTE.CDM module loading
in startup.ncf. The new module will soon be released Novell’s web
site as a patch. Until it’s release, remark the load of this module
in startup.ncf, roboot, run taperx to update firmware, un-remark the
QLCSTFE from startup.ncf and reboot.

2. From a client system, copy TapeRx.nlm into the SYS:\system\ volume directory of the server. Also from a client system, copy the two firmware image files (V911D052.bin and V825B052.bin) into the SYS:\system\ directory of the server

3. Before continuing, the "nwaspi" module needs to be loaded. Then load the TapeRx module by typing in "TapeRx" and hitting enter.

4. The firmware version and device id need to be determined by typing in "TapeRx show" at the system console screen. Change to the logger screen, and this information will be displayed.

Upgrade your firmware:

5. At the system console screen, type in:
TapeRx upgrade -id:x -f:sys:\system\Vxxxx052.bin

6. The program will give you a message about the length of time it will take. The LED's will begin to flash on the drive when it begins the process.

CAUTION : Do not remove power to the tape drive during this process
7. At the logger screen, when the program is completed, there will be a message that reads "Firmware Version 825B or 911D installed," depending on which firmware used.

Backup Software Notes

Some backup software packages may assign the tape device a different drive name after the firmware flash and reboot. This could happen in Backup Exec for instance.
If the scheduled backup job was assigned specifically to the drive under the old name then you may have to edit the job to point to the new auto assigned device name or rename the device to the old name. If scheduled jobs were assigned to run on any available drive the device renaming will not be an issue.
