This Release of the PowerVault 124T LTO2 Includes:

Loader Firmware V43
LTO2 Drive Firmware 1914

Prior to upgrading – Important Information
- Ensure the tape drive is unloaded and the drive is in an idle state

- If you have backup applications running services such as Backup Exec or ArcServe you should stop the services from running at this time.
- (stop service/ daemon for all backup applications). Before shutting down services/ daemon make sure that the backup application does not have a ”software lock” on the unit that prevents media from being inserted into the mail slot. (For example in Veritas Backup Exec perform a unlock operation before shutting down services). If this does not solve the issue power cycle the 124T with the ISV services/ daemon stopped.
***If you are using Windows 2003 – After the Loader Firmware Update, the Loader may report a 6E / 3D error. This is due to known Microsoft condition. Powercycle the Loader and then refer to the following link for more details on how to fix this issue: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;842411 ***

NOTE: x: represents the system root drive letter.***Please be prepared to restart the server after completing the upgrade***

Upgrading the Firmware

There are 2 tools available that can be used for upgrading: the Remote Management Unit (RMU) and the Dell Firmware Update Utility (DFU).

Note: RMU uses Ethernet, while DFU uses SCSI. RMU instructions can be found in the Autoloader User Guide and DFU instructions are located in this release’s home directory.

***If you are upgrading from loader code V8, it is recommended that you first upgrade the loader and then the drive.

If you are upgrading from loader code V26, it is recommended that you first upgrade the drive and then the loader ***

***The loader firmware MUST be updated using the RMU/Web Interface. DFU should only be used to update the drive firmware***

Upgrade Instructions Using RMU

***If running Internet Explorer, in order to see the script running you need to have Active scripting enabled in Internet Explorer Options***

1. Attach and configure the RMU as specified in the documentation
2. Open a browser window and enter the IP address of the loader
3. Select the Firmware tab. You will be prompted to enter an Administrator User Name and Password.
4. Enter the path or click the Browse button to specify the location of the loader firmware image file and press Upload.

* The loader firmware image path should look something like:

x:\dell\drivers\R159717\Loader\UHDL_DEL_ENGLISH_V43-0.img for Windows Environments
                                              Or
x:/dell/drivers/R159717/Loader/UHDL_DEL_ENGLISH_V43-0.img for Linux Environments

* If upgrading the Drive Firmware, please read the following note prior to upgrading:

***Ensure the tape drive is unloaded and the drive is in an idle state

- If you have backup applications running services such as Backup Exec or ArcServe you should stop the services from running at this time.
- (stop service/ daemon for all backup applications). Before shutting down services/ daemon make sure that the backup application does not have a ”software lock” on the unit that prevents media from being inserted into the mail slot. (For example in Veritas Backup Exec perform a unlock operation before shutting down services). If this does not solve the issue power cycle the 124T with the ISV services/ daemon stopped.

- It is recommended to use DFU for the drive upgrade (since it takes up to 5 minutes, as opposed to using RMU that can take up to 45 minutes). DFU Instructions are found in this document ***

The LTO2 Drive Firmware image path should look something like:

x:\dell\drivers\R159717\LTO2\V19145405-452.IMG for Windows Environments
                                              Or
x:/dell/drivers/R159717/LTO2/V19145405-452.IMG for Linux Environments

CAUTION: Do not remove power to the tape drive during this process or close the RMU window.
5. The RMU will begin to update the firmware and the status will be displayed on the small LCD found on the front of the loader.
6. Once the application completes, the screen will display a pop up message informing you that the upgrade completed successfully and will prompt you to press OK. If an error is found, please consult the Loader User’s Guide.

Linux Instructions for DFU
Note Linux must be Enterprise Version 3 or higher with compiler GCC 3.2.3. If using earlier versions of Linux i.e. AS 2.1 tools will not function due to GCC support. Either move drive to a supported Linux system or a Windows system to perform update.
1. Open a console session and go to the directory where the files were extracted i.e. /dell/drivers/R159717/
2. Type the command: ./DFU_SCSI_Utility/Linux/DFU and press return. A console application will start and display general information regarding the utility.
3. Press enter to begin the Utility. The utility will search the system for attached Tape devices and display a table of devices found.
4. Each tape device found on the system will be represented by a device number. Select the device number for the device you wish to upgrade.
Note: if you do not see any devices check cabling and make sure the sg module is loaded.

You can issue command “lsmod | grep sg”. If nothing is returned type the command “modprobe sg” to start the sg service.

If DFU cannot find all the devices, do the following:

1. Note the Bus (B), Port (P), Target (T), and Lun (L) information.
2. Exit DFU
3. Type the command:echo “scsi add-single-device P B T L” > /proc/scsi/scsi the Lun should be the lun number from step 1+1.
4. Re-run the DFU application
5. A new screen will be displayed which will provide you with a new list of commands. Select 1 – Load Device Firmware.
6. At the next prompt enter the path to the firmware image file and press return.

* For the LTO2 Drive Firmware, the image path should look something like:

x:/dell/drivers/R159717/LTO2/V19145405-452.IMG

CAUTION: Do not remove power to the tape drive during this process or close the DFU dialog box.
7. The console application will begin to update the firmware and provide a status throughout the process.
8. Once the application completes, the screen will display the final status. If no errors occurred press return and the application will return to the device selection screen. If an error is found, please consult the DFU User’s Guide.
9. If no other drives are to be updated enter the E option and press return to exit the application.
Note: If running the DFU utility from Console session 1, the following message may be displayed:

(scsi0:A:2:0): parity error detected in Data-in phase. SEQADDR(0x1a6) SCSIRATE(0x93)

The scsi0:A:2:0 value defines the SCSI identification of the tape device. During the update process the tape device will reset after the firmware is downloaded to the device. As the device is restarted, the DFU application issues queries to the device. These queries will result in the SCSI DATA-in Phase messages from the Operating system because the device is not yet ready.

This is a warning message from the OS and can be disregarded as it does not indicate any failures. These messages should not be displayed if running the utility from X-Windows or any other console session.
10. Reboot the loader and then the server.
