ITDT - DELL Customer Release (ITDT-DCR) - README ================================================ Table of contents ================= 1.0 Introduction 1.1 Supported Operating Systems and Platforms 1.2 Supported Products 2.0 Installation 2.1 Prerequisites for ITDT-DCR 3.0 General Usage 4.0 Known Issues and Limitations 4.1 Windows 4.2 Linux 1.0 Introduction ---------------- ITDT - DELL Customer Release (ITDT-DCR) can run quick and extended diagnostics on tape drives, retrieve error logs from tape drives and perform a firmware update on tape drives or libraries. There is no dedicated diagnostics for the library robotics with this release, but testing tape drives inside libraries is supported. With ITDT-DCR you can also view the contents of the ITDT-DCR output files. ITDT-DCR offers the following features: - Simple program installation - Device scan with device list retrieval - Enhanced Tape Drive Test - Additional Tests to be run against Tape drives - Error log retrieval for Tape drives - Firmware update for Tape drives/Libraries - Logs visualization module - Tape Driver independence 1.1 Supported Operating Systems and Platforms --------------------------------------------- - Microsoft Windows 2000/XP/2003 (IX86, 32-bit) - Linux Distributions with glibc 2.2.5 and higher (IX86) 1.2 Supported Products ----------------------- ITDT-DCR supports diagnostics for: - IBM Ultrium 3580 Tape Drive (Generation 1, 2, 3 and 4) - IBM Ultrium Internal Tape Drives T200/T200F, T400/T400F, T800/T800F, T800V, T1600/F - IBM SystemStorage 3580 Half Height/TS2230 Tape Drive Express 2.0 Installation ---------------- The ITDT-DCR installation uses the InstallShield application. A Windows and a Linux version of the install package are available. 2.1 Prerequisites for ITDT-DCR ------------------------------ ITDT-DCR requires a Java Runtime Environment (JRE) to be installed. If you have a lower version or no runtime installed, please install one of the supported JRE's. Supported JREs: Java 1.4.2_03 by Sun Microsystems and higher Java 1.4.1 by IBM Corporation and higher Note that the JRE delivered with Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 and 5 (RHEL4, RHEL5) is not supported. So please install one of the supported JRE's before launching the ITDT-DCR InstallShield application. On RHEL4 and other Linux systems where Java is not available in the path, the environment variable JAVA_HOME has to be set before starting the installer. Example: IBM JRE: $ export JAVA_HOME=/opt/IBMJava2-142/jre $ ./setuplinux.bin Sun Microsystems JRE: $ export JAVA_HOME=/usr/java/j2re1.4.2_09 $ ./setuplinux.bin In such a case, also a symbolic link has to be created to ensure that the installed tool will find the JRE. Example: IBM JRE: $ ln -sf /opt/IBMJava2-142/jre /opt/dell/dvtd/jre Sun Microsystems JRE: $ ln -sf /usr/java/j2re1.4.2_09 /opt/dell/dvtd/jre Adjust these statements to the JRE versions you are using. If you decided to install ITDT-DCR into another directory, replace the directories in the examples above when issuing the commands. For the graphical user interface a minimum screen resolution of 1024*768 pixels is required. 3.0 General Usage ----------------- To start ITDT-DCR click Dell Diagnostics > ITDT-DELL Customer Release from your Start Menu. The first time the program is run the User Settings dialog appears allowing you to enter your name and company. We strongly recommend to fill out the data for further analysis of test results. Click "OK" to save your settings and close the dialog. In the toolbar the "Diagnostic" button and the "Log Files" button allows to switch between the Diagnostic perspective and the Log Files perspective. The Diagnostic perspective contains the operations related to the physically attached Tape Devices. To start with diagnostics, ensure that the devices are attached. To display the list of Tape devices found, click the "Scan" Button in the "Control Center". You can then select one device by clicking on the corresponding checkbox. Choose one of the available operations, "Test", "Info", "FW Update" or click on the arrow next to the "Test" button to select an extended test. For each device on which the operation has been started a Tab appears on the right panel. The Tab contains the operation information and status. 4.0 Known Issues and Limitations -------------------------------- 4.1 Windows ----------- After a firmware update, devices may disappear from the bus. This is a known Windows problem. (Article # Q812024, http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;812024). Repeated Scan operations may help to rediscover the device. If you are using Adaptec SCSI Host Bus Adapters, please ensure that your are using the latest Adaptec Host Bus Adapter Drivers instead of the drivers shipped with the Windows operating system. 4.2 Linux --------- ITDT-DCR on Linux requires glibc 2.2.5 or later. When using an Emulex FC-AL host adapter, firmware update will not work due to an issue with the transfer size with the current (2.01g) Emulex device driver. Until this issue is fixed on the driver side, use other tools to perform a firmware update under Linux / Emulex. Scan limitations: - 2 channels per host adapter. Devices attached on more than 2 channels will be detected if they were already attached at boot time. - SCSI/FCP: ID 0-255, LUN: no restriction, but active device detection only for LUN 0 and 1 - 256 devices overallDownload Driver Pack
