Prior to upgrading:
- Ensure the tape drive is unloaded and the drive is in an idle state 
(stop the services for all backup applications).


       NOTE: x: represents the system root drive letter.

Extract instructions
Download the upgrade utility:

1. Download and run the file “R91331.exe” from a Microsoft Windows Based System. 

This will create the directory x:\dell\drivers\R91331\ containing the files:

	TapeRX User Manual - Travan.pdf – short user guide for TapeRX 
	readme.htm  -  installation instructions in HTML format
	readme.txt  - installation instructions in text format
	releasenotes.txt – release notes in text format
	V310BC-052.DFI – Firmware image file
	\windows\TapeRx.exe – the program to upgrade the drive using windows
 	\linux\TapeRx.lx – the program to upgrade the drive using linux
 
 
IMPORTANT:  If you have back up applications running services such as Backup 
	Exec or Arcserve you must stop the services from running at this time or the 
	application will not see the Tape Device.  For help on stopping the services see 
	your Software Documentation.
 
Windows Instructions:

	Go to the directory x:\dell\drivers\R91331\Windows.  Click  TapeRx.exe.  The 
	software will search for all the supported tape drives that are attached to the 
	system. Once the search is complete, the diagnostic window will be displayed, 
	showing one tab for each supported tape drive found. Included are the drive 
	type, target ID, drive model number and firmware revision level.
 
Upgrade firmware:
 
1.  Click the tab that represents the tape drive you wish to work on, then 
select the “Upgrade Firmware” option on the left side.  
 
2.  Click the “Browse for Firmware File” on the right side.  Go to the directory 
x:\dell\drivers\R91331 and open the V310BC-052.DFI firmware file.  
 
3.  Click the “Upgrade Firmware” button.  The drive LED’s will begin to flash 
when the firmware upgrade process begins.
 
       CAUTION : Do not remove power to the tape drive during this process.

 
4.  The message  “Firmware Version 310B is installed” will appear when 
complete.
 
5. Reboot the server prior to the next scheduled backup.   This will restart the 
backup services and force the OS to see the device with it’s new firmware level. 

 
Linux Red Hat instructions

Supported versions are Red Hat 7.x, 8.x, 9.x, AS 2.1 and ES 3.0

NOTE: There are several known issues with the default Adaptec SCSI host driver 
aic7xxx included in RedHat AS 2.1.  Dell recommends that users upgrade to the 
aic7xxx_mod driver that resolves many of these issues.  The aic7xxx_mod driver 
is automatically installed on AS 2.1 systems, so no RPMs are needed.  
   To use it:
	1.Edit the /etc/modules.conf file so that references to aic7xxx are 
          replaced by aic7xxx_mod
	2.Remake initrd
	3.Reboot server

1. Copy V310BC-052.DFI and TapeRx.lx from the Windows Server to the Linux Server 
that has the tape drive attached. 
 
2. If running a graphical interface (GNOME, KDE, etc.) open a command line 
window.
 
3. Put the program file (TapeRx.lx) and the firmware image (V310BC-052.DFI) into 
a directory on the computer connected to the tape drive.
 
4. Move to the directory where you have put the files.  The firmware version and 
device id need to be determined by typing in “./TapeRx.lx show”.  This will show 
all of the devices recognized by the program.  Take note of the device id 
assigned to the drive and the firmware version because this information will be 
used in upgrading the device.   
 
Upgrade firmware:
 
5.  At the system console screen, type in:
 
      ./TapeRx.lx upgrade –id:x –f:V310BC-052.DFI
 
Note:  The “x” for the  device id and firmware file name are determined by the 
“./TapeRx.lx show” command.  
 
6.  The program will give you a message about the length of time it will take.  
The drive LED’s will begin to flash when the firmware upgrade process begins.
 
       CAUTION : Do not remove power to the tape drive during this process.

 
7.  The message  “Firmware Version 310BC is installed” will appear when 
complete.
 
8. Reboot the server prior to the next scheduled backup.  This will restart the 
backup services and force the OS to see the device with it’s new firmware level.
 
Backup Software Notes 
 
Some backup software packages may assign the tape device a different drive name 
after the firmware flash and reboot. If the scheduled backup job was assigned 
specifically to the drive under the old name then you may have to edit the job 
to point to the new auto assigned device name or rename the device to the old name. 
If scheduled jobs were assigned to run on any available drive the device renaming 
will not be an issue.
