1.0     INTRODUCTION

You have just purchased one of the greatest values in PC Card fax/modems.
The installation of this fax/modem is very simple if you follow the 
instructions carefully. Most installations will be able to follow the 
Quick Install instructions provided in the package. Otherwise the manual 
will provide all the additional information necessary for more unique 
installations. Please refer to the ADDENDUM section of this README.TXT file
to view additional information not available at the time the manual went to 
press.

This diskette contains :

*       PMXFM.EXE       -       Fax/Modem Point Enabler
*       README.TXT      -       This README file
*       FM288B.TXT      -       AT Command Set for the Rockwell based              
				FM288B modems
*       FM288T.TXT      -       AT Command Set for the AT&T based              
				FM288T modems
*       FM144X.TXT      -       AT Command Set for the Cirrus Logic based              
				FM144C, FM144D modems
*       MDMPX.INF       -       Windows 95 .INF file for the FM288B and 
				FM288T modems.

Note :  The FM144 modems will be automatically recognized and configured 
	by Windows 95.


2.0     COMPLETE AT COMMAND SET

In the manual you will find a Basic AT Command Set. If you are looking for a 
command that is not covered in the Basic AT Command Set you will need to 
refer to the complete AT Command Set for your particular modem.

To determine which file you should use with your modem, turn the modem over 
and look on the top of the back label. The number on the top of the label 
will match one of the .TXT files on this disk.  
		
	For instance:

	FM144C or FM144D - FM144X.TXT
	FM288B           - FM288B.TXT
	FM288T           - FM288T.TXT

The .TXT file has information about your particular modem as well as a
Complete AT Command set.

3.0     FAX MODEM POINT ENABLER

The point enabler, PMXFM.EXE is used to initialize the modem when you
are not using Card & Socket Services.  You can use the Point Enabler
from the DOS prompt or put it into the AUTOEXEC.BAT to load it everytime
you start your computer.

	PMXFM [H|?] [F] [S=n] [M=xxxx] [C=n] [I=nn]

	where
	    H or ? requests this menu
	    F force the Fax/Modem to be configured as specified
	    S specifies socket (0,1)
	    M specifies memory window segment
	    C specifies COM port (1,2,3,4)
	    I specifies interrupt requrest (IRQ) level
	    n is a decimal digit
	    x is a hexadecimal digit

	The F and M switches are normally not necessary, unless card services
	exists and users have trouble configuring the PCMCIA fax modem
	through the card service.

	Switches are not case sensitive.
	
	Defaults: 
	    S=first M=D000 C=4 I=3
 
4.0     TECHNICAL NOTES FOR POINT ENABLER

1.      To avoid conflicts between modem and other serial devices, the
	following rules should be followed

	    If modem use COM1, other devices can use COM2 or COM4 only.
	    If modem use COM2, other devices can use COM1 or COM3 only.
	    If modem use COM3, other devices can use COM2 or COM4 only.
	    If modem use COM4, other devices can use COM1 or COM3 only.

	Unlike a real IBM-PC COM port, a PCMCIA modem card has no way to 
	signal to the interface controller that it is time to tri-state 
	the shared interrupt request line.
	 
2.      If you wish to enable the fax/modem each time the computer boots up,
	you should add the following line to AUTOEXEC.BAT.
	
			 example:  C:\PMXFM.EXE C=4 I=3 
		   
	Ensure that you have the PCMCIA Modem inserted in one of the slots 
	before rebooting.

3.      Most communication software follows the Interrupt settings and 
	I/O address settings as shown below:
		
			IRQ Number        I/O Address

	       COM1:        4                 3F8
	       COM2:        3                 2F8
	       COM3:        4                 3E8
	       COM4:        3                 2E8
			
4.      If you are using Windows 3.1X, you can change the IRQ under the 
	CONTROL PANEL - PORTS - ADVANCED dialog box. If you change the
	COMPORT and IRQ under Windows, be sure that it matches the parameter 
	in the PMXFM.EXE line.
		    

5.0     ADDENDUM

Microsoft Windows NT 3.51 Fax Modem Installation
------------------------------------------------

Windows NT 3.51 supports PCMCIA via a simple socket enabler. To use your fax
modem under Windwos NT :

Step 1 :        Upgrade your Windows NT 3.51 to the latest Service Pack. This
		is available from Microsoft's FTP site on the internet.

Step 2 :        Ensure that COM2 is available, i.e., You only have one serial
		port in your notebook / PC. If you have a second serial port,
		you may need to disable it under the BIOS.

Step 3 :        While your computer is switched off, insert the fax modem 
		into an available PC Card Slot.

Step 4 :        Switch your computer on.

Step 5 :        Run your communication program. Be sure to select 
		COM2 in your communication program settings. 

Troubleshooting.
----------------

If you do not get any modem response. 

1.      Ensure that the PCMCIA driver is running. You may check this, 
	by clicking on in the WINDOWS NT DIAGNOSTIC - DRIVERS under the
	ADMINISTRATION TOOLS group.

2.      If the PCMCIA driver is not running, Click on the CONTROL PANEL - 
	DEVICES and startup type of the PCMCIA driver to BOOT. Then cold
	boot you computer.

6.0     CUSTOMER SUPPORT

If you have tried to solve your problem, but are still unable to resolve
the situation, please contact the place where you bought the fax modem.

Before you call, please have the following information ready:

*       Which computer or notebook do you have.
*       Which modem do you have.        
*       Which DOS Card and Socket Services you are using, if any.
*       Which COM port and IRQ you are using.
*       A description of the problem.
*       A listing of your AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS files.
