            README.TXT for C105A/PRO TWAIN driver ver1.01
            =============================================

System Requirements
===================

    * PC/AT 386 or 486 computer
    * 80 MB hard disk drive with at least 20 MB free space
    * True- or high-color Super VGA display card
    * 4 MB RAM
    * MS-Windows v3.1

Hardware Installation
=====================

    * Before you install the scanner interface card, ensure that there is no
      conflict in the I/O port addresses of the interface cards on your
      computer.

    * Please refer to the user's guide for information on how to install the
      interface card and the scanner into your computer.

Software Installation
=====================

    * Ensure that the SMARTDRV and EMM386 drivers included in your CONFIG.SYS
      or AUTOEXEC.BAT file are MS-Windows versions, not MS-DOS.It is MS-Windows
      version if it appears like the following:

          C:\WINDOWS\SMARTDRV.EXE

    * Run INSTALL under the MS-WINDOWS and then just follow the screen
      instructions to install the C105A/PRO TWAIN-Source driver.

    * After installing the hardware and software into your computer, please
      test the scanner hardware immediately. Follow these steps:

      1. From the File menu of your application, select 'Select Source...'
         command.

      2. Choose C105A/PRO.

      3. Access the File menu again and then select 'Acquire...' command.

      4. Click on the 'Configure...' button.

      5. Click on the 'Hardware Test...' button.

      The program starts testing the scanner hardware. If the test failed
      but the system is still running, please select another DMA channel or
      IRQ number and then try again.

      If there is a conflict in the DMA channel or IRQ number, the system
      may crash. In such case, please reboot your system and then select
      another DMA channel or IRQ number. Afterwards, try again.

    * After testing and passing the hardware test, please calibrate the scanner.

Calibrating the Scanner
=======================

      You need to calibrate the scanner for best results. Please refer to the
      user's guide for information on how to calibrate the scanner.

      For Merge Scan, the software will ask for the calibration curve and then
      automatically enable the calibration feature.

Operation
=========

    * Before using the Acquire command to invoke the TWAIN driver, use first
      the Select Source option to choose C105A/PRO.

    * To increase the speed of your system, run MS-Windows using the Enhanced
      mode.

    * Use the Escape and Spacebar keys to abort and stop the scanning process
      respectively. Aborting the process causes the program to discard the
      scanned image. While stopping the process causes the program to process
      whatever image was scanned before you stopped the scanning process.

    * If you want to check the driver version, use the 'About' option under
      system menu bar.

Auto Merge
==========

    * When scanning an image that has a width or length of less than 4.1
      inches, Single Scan is always more reliable and faster than Merge Scan.

    * Software calibration is useless for Black & White mode. Thus, when using
      Merge Scan under such mode, most of the time the result is not reliable.
      If you want to use an OCR to analyze the merged image, we strongly
      suggest that you merge the OCRed text into your word processor. If the
      image is a picture, you can scan it using the 16- or 256-Gray mode and
      then convert it to black and white after processing.

Compatibility
=============
    * During our lab test, we found out that some drivers have compatibility
      problems with other display modes. So, if your output image contains
      distortion, just switch to another mode.

    * If you use the 16-Gray mode, the displayed image on the TWAIN window might
      contain distortion. During such case, don't be alarmed because you can
      still get a good output image on your application.

    * There are three protocols used for transferring image data from the
      TWAINdriver into your application: native, buffered, and disk file. The
      C105A/PRO supports both the native and the buffered protocols,
      but not disk file.

    * The TWAIN-Source for C105A/PRO cannot simultaneously connect to
      more than one application. If you want to use the same driver on another
      application, you need to unload first that driver from the first
      application.

Software Applications
=====================

    * FotoTouch Color v1.0

         FotoTouch Color only supports three kinds of images: 24-bit, 8-bit
         gray, and line art images. If you acquire a 256-color image, the image
         will be converted to gray image.

   * iPhoto Plus

         Only version 1.01 or later supports 16-gray mode.

   * Interpreter Intelligent OCR

         This software is an OCR application,thus only Black and White Line Art
         mode is supported. Version 2.01j or later is recommended.

   * Picture Publisher v3.1

         This software is compatible.

   * ProImage for Windows v1.1

         This software is compatible.

Image Quality
=============

   * For best results, turn ON the calibration feature. But take note that
     during pre-scan, turning this feature off speeds up the scanning process.

   * When using iPhoto Plus, you can get the best output image quality by
     adjusting the gamma value. To adjust, use the Preferences option
     under the File menu.

Others
======

   * If the message General Protection Fault appears on your screen, please
     restart MS-Windows.

   * Leaving the scanner idle for 30 seconds causes the program to turn it off
     to save power and to prolong its life.

Unexpected Termination
======================

   * If any operation terminates unexpectedly, check your directories for
      ~CM@*.TMP files and then delete them to save space.

   * If possible, execute the CHKDSK command at the DOS prompt by typing the
     following to check and close any files the application abnormally
     terminates:

                >CHKDSK /F

                                  End
                                  ===
