The Sentinel System Drivers provide a communication path between your
protected application and the Sentinel key. The driver you install depends
on the operating system you are using.
This readme file describes the installation procedures for all Sentinel
System Drivers. See the appropriate section for the procedure about the
driver that you are installing.
Quick Installation Procedure: Most of you will be installing Rainbow's
system driver from the installer for your application. The easiest/best
way to do this is to:
1. Simply copy the entire contents of this diskette to your
installation media
2. Execute SETUP.EXE from your installer
Notes: If you intend to use the USB SuperPro, be sure to run SETUP.EXE
with the "/USB" switch. You may also need to use the "/P" switch to specify
the location of the driver files on your installation media (depends on
the current directory when spawning the SETUP program).

2.0 Changes Since Last General Release (PD-5.36)
-----------------------------------------------------
1. On WindowsNT, a re-boot of the machine is no longer required. The
setup program will automatically start (and stop the current driver
installed if it is running) the new driver so a re-boot is not required.
On Windows9X, the driver will automatically be started. However, if a
older driver was previously installed you will have to re-boot the
machine for the new driver to take effect.
2. USB Support - This release supports the USB Superpro on Windows95 OSR2,
Windows98, and WindowsNT 5.0 (Intel only). The GUI Setup program has been
modified to allow the user to configure the driver to look for keys on
the USB or not. Note: The driver will detect parallel port keys first,
then USB keys. If you perform a FindFirst with a USB key only, then
attach a parallel port key, you will need to perform another FindFirst
to find the parallel port key (FindNext will not go back and search the
parallel port path).
3. Support has been added for ECP ports on WindowsNT. An ECP port type has
been added, and the WindowsNT driver now should have a better chance of
seeing the key during a print job (using ECP or ECP with DMA) to the same
parallel port.
4. A new Registry Flag named ClientLibVersion has been added so the user
and/or Technical Support can identify the RDP version of the client
library talking to the System Driver. This flag is stored under
hkey_local_machine | .... | Sentinel | Current.
5. Corrected a problem where the API would take a long time to respond
when the SuperPro key is not attached to the parallel port (when the
BUSY line is low by default).
Note: If a new Sentinel Pro 22.3 (10/98) or Sentinel SuperPro 5.1 (12/98)
linked-in library is used, then installation of PD-5.36 or greater is
required on all Windows platforms. These client libraries will not be
able to communicate with system drivers older than PD-5.36.

3.0 Windows NT Driver Installation Procedure
------------------------------------------------
Note: administrative privilege is required to install the NT driver.
1. Make a backup copy of the diskette.
2. Under the Microsoft Windows NT Main group, double click on
"Command Prompt". (On NT 4.0 or later, select "Run" from the Taskbar)
3. Change drive to the floppy drive containing the Driver Diskette.
\WIN_NT. In case of CD-ROM distribution, change the current directory
to \PRODUCT\DRIVERS\<LANGUAGE>\WIN_NT, where <LANGUAGE> is one of the
languages supported. (On NT 4.0 or later, click the "Browse..." button
and select the directory described above)
4. Run driver setup program -- SETUP.EXE (see section 7.0 for details).
Alternatively, the individual installer (per platform) can be executed.
Type SETUPX86 (for Intel systems), SETUPPPC (for PowerPC systems), or
SETUPAXP (for DEC Alpha systems) at the command prompt. There are
several command line options:
1. /q Quiet mode.
Normal dialogs are not displayed but error messages
will be displayed.
2. /e Suppress all messages. (Overwrites the /q switch)
Both normal dialogs and error messages not displayed.
Look for non-zero return code from the installer so
installation error can be detected.
3. /pxxx Path, where xxx is the path of files to be installed.
Specify the path of files to be installed.
Otherwise, files will be copied from the default
directory.
4. /o Overwrite the existing Sentinel Driver. By default, if
the existing driver is newer than the one to be installed,
the installer will not copy over it.
5. /USB Install USB driver support (Windows NT 5.0 on Intel platform only)
Optionally, we provide an integrated setup program, SETUP.EXE, at
the root directory of the driver software that autodetects the
operating system and invoke the correct driver setup program for
you. Please refer to the "Autodetecting Setup Program" section for
more details.
5. A window with the title bar "Sentinel Driver Setup Program" is
displayed.
6. Select "Functions" and then "Install Sentinel Driver" from the menu bar.
7. A dialog box with the default path for the NT driver is displayed.
Change the drive letter if necessary and click "OK".
8. The Sentinel Driver and associated files are copied to the hard disk.
One of the DLLs, SNTI386.DLL, SNTALPHA.DLL, or SNTPPC.DLL
and SENTINEL.HLP are copied to \%SYSTEMROOT%\SYSTEM32. SENTTEMP.SYS
is copied to the file \%SYSTEMROOT%\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\SENTINEL.SYS.
%SYSTEMROOT% is the directory where Microsoft Windows NT has been
installed.
9. If the driver installation is successful, a dialog box with the message
"Sentinel Driver Files Copied Successfully" is displayed.
10. When complete, a dialog box with the message "Driver Installed! Restart
your system" is displayed.
11. Click "OK" to continue.
12. Restart your computer.
Note: A re-boot is not 100% necessary, as you can start it by:
1. Select Control Panel | Devices, choose "Sentinel", and click on the
"Start" button, or
2. From a DOS box, type "NET START SENTINEL".
Manual Installation of Sentinel System Driver for Windows NT

PD-5.33 and later no longer supports manual installation.

3.1 Windows NT Driver Configuration Procedure
-------------------------------------------------
Note: administrative privilege is required to configure the NT driver.
If your system setting has been changed and you would like to reconfigure
the Sentinel Driver, perform the following steps.
1. Under the Microsoft Windows NT Main group, double click on
"Control Panel". (On NT 4.0 or later, select "Settings" from the
Taskbar and click on "Control Panel")
2. Under the Control Panel double click on "Drivers". (On NT 4.0 or later
double click on "Multimedia", select the "Devices" tab, and double click
on "Other Multimedia Devices")
3. Select "Sentinel for i386 System" in the installed driver list box.
4. Click the "Setup" button. (On NT 4.0 or later, click on "Settings..."
button.
5. Click the "Edit" button to edit an existing parallel port setting
or click the "Add" button to add a new parallel port setting.
Select "OK" after you finish the port configuration.
6. A dialog box with the message "Your driver setting has changed" is
displayed. You will need to exit and restart Windows NT so that the
new setting can take effect."
7. If you have any other application running at the background with
unsaved data, choose "Don't Restart Now". Quit all the application
and restart Windows NT, Otherwise select "Restart Now".

3.2 Windows NT Driver Un-install
------------------------------------------------
1. Under the Microsoft Windows NT Main group, double click on
"Command Prompt". (On NT 4.0 or later, Select "Run" from the Taskbar)
2. Change drive to the floppy drive containing the Driver Diskette.
In case of diskette distribution, change the current directory to
\WIN_NT. In case of CD-ROM distribution, change the current directory
to \PRODUCT\DRIVERS\WIN_NT. (On NT 4.0 or later, click the "Browse..."
button and select the directory described above)
3. Run the driver setup program -- SETUP.EXE /U (see section 7.0 for details).
Alternatively, you can execute the individual installer, i.e. SETUPX86
(for Intel systems), SETUPPPC (for PowerPC systems), or SETUPAXP (for
DEC Alpha systems) from the command prompt with the /u (or /U) switch.
1. Use Command-line options:
/q /u - Quietly removes the existing driver.
2. Via Pull-down menu - Run setup program and select "Remove Sentinel
Driver" from the "Function" menu.
4. When complete, a dialog box with the message "Sentinel Driver Removed"
is displayed.
5. Click "OK" to continue.
Note: Some files may not be removed until you restart your computer.

3.3 Recovery Mechanisms on NT-4.0
-------------------------------------------------

THIS SECTION APPLIES ONLY IF YOU HAVE SENTINEL DRIVER VERSION PD-5.16 AND EARLIER
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Rainbow has encountered an issue with the final release (build 1381) of
WindowsNT 4.0. The following two scenarios will cause WindowsNT 4.0 to
not boot properly:
A. A change to the default configuration settings of Rainbow's System
Driver prior to installing WindowsNT 4.0 (the installation will
not complete successfully), or
B. A change to the default configuration settings of Rainbow's System
Driver after WindowsNT 4.0 is already installed (the re-boot will
not complete successfully)
Upon re-booting the machine, WindowsNT will display a blue screen to the
the user with a message that an error has occurred in the NT Kernel.
As of 9/30/96, Rainbow has released a new version of the Sentinel
System Drivers, version PD-5.17, to resolve this issue. It is strongly
recommended that the new driver (PD-5.17 or later) be installed.

3.4 Windows NT - DOS Device Driver
-------------------------------------------------
It is possible, though unlikely, that on some systems, applications using
the Watcom C/C++ with Rational DOS/4G and Microsoft Visual C/C++ with Phar
Lap TNT DOS Extender may be unable to communicate with our Windows NT
Device Driver. In the unlikely event that you experience problems running
your DOS Extended application under Windows NT, a DOS Device Driver is
provided which allows your application to communicate with the Windows NT
Device Driver on systems where it otherwise could not.
To install this device driver, do the following:
1. Copy the file SENTDOS.SYS to the target system's hard disk.
2. Add the following statement to the custom Config file used
by your application's PIF file, or if your application does
not use a custom Config file, to the system's CONFIG.NT file.

Where %path% is the actual path where SENTDOS.SYS resides.

4.0 Windows 3.X Driver Installation Procedure
-------------------------------------------------
1. Make a backup copy of the diskette.
2. Select File|Run under the Program Manager.
3. Type "A:\WIN_31\INSTALL.EXE" at the dialog box. Change the drive letter
A: to the floppy disk drive where the Driver Diskette is located if
you are running from a drive other than A:
In case of the CD-ROM distribution, Type
{CD-ROM DRIVE}:\PRODUCT\DRIVERS\WIN_31\INSTALL.EXE where {CD-ROM DRIVE}
is the drive letter corresponding to CD-ROM drive on your system.
There are three command line options:
1. /q Quiet mode.
Normal dialogs (warning, information) are not displayed.
Error messages are displayed.
2. /pxxx Path, where xxx is the path of files to be installed.
Specify the path of files to be installed.
Otherwise, files will be copied from the default
directory.
3. /o Overwrite the existing Sentinel Driver. By default, if
the existing driver is newer than the one to be installed,
the installer will not copy over it.
Optionally, we provide an integrated setup program, SETUP.EXE, at
the root directory of the driver software that autodetects the
operating system and invoke the correct driver setup program for
you. Please refer to the "Autodetecting Setup Program" section for
more details.
4. Follow the installation instructions.
5. If you need to change any of the driver's default settings, modify the
SYSTEM.INI file. See the following section for details.
6. When the installation is complete, restart Windows.
Return Value of the Win 3.X driver installer
--------------------------------------------
When installation is complete the installer will broadcast a message
to all top level tasks. The message RNBO_INSTALL_DONE will be sent.
the first number will be 5555h and the second number will be one of the
following:
0 -- RNBO_SUCCESS (Install/uninstall successful)
1 -- RNBO_CLASS_REGISTER_ERROR (RegisterClass call failed)
2 -- RNBO_CREATE_WINDOW_ERROR (CreateWindow call failed)
3 -- RNBO_INIT_FAILED (Cannot initialize the installer)
4 -- RNBO_BAD_OS (Running under wrong operating system)
5 -- RNBO_NO_DRIVER (Cannot find the driver source file)
7 -- RNBO_NEWER_DRIVER_EXISTS (The existing driver is newer)
8 -- RNBO_SYSINI_READONLY (The SYSTEM.INI is write protected)
9 -- RNBO_SYS_INI_NOT_FOUND (Cannot find the SYSTEM.INI file)
10 -- RNBO_SYS_INI_UPDATE_FAILED (The SYSTEM.INI file cannot be updated)
11 -- RNBO_USER_TERMINATED (Installation terminated by the user)

Manual Installation of Sentinel System Driver for Windows
---------------------------------------------------------
We highly recommend that you install the Sentinel System Driver for Windows
with our installer. If you decide to install it manually later on, you may
do so by performing the following steps:
1. Copy SENTINEL.386 to the windows directory.
2. Add the following line under the [386Enh] section in your SYSTEM.INI
file located in your windows directory.
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\SENTINEL.386
Make sure to refer to the correct directory if the windows directory
is located in other than C:\WINDOWS.

4.1 Windows 3.X Driver Configuration
----------------------------------------
The method of configuring the system driver under 16 bit Windows uses
fields defined within the SYSTEM.INI file. Data can be defined for all
ports up to a maximum of 4 ports. The section [SentinelSetup] contains
global configuration data, i.e. autotiming delay, interrupts to mask, etc.
The section names [SentinelSetupPortA] through [SentinelSetupPortZ]
contain per-port configuration data. The port address field must be
defined for the configuration data under these sections to be used.

4.2 Windows 3.X Driver Un-install

1. Select File|Run under the Program Manager.
2. Type "A:\WIN_31\INSTALL.EXE /U" at the dialog box. Change the drive
letter A: to the floppy disk drive where the Driver Diskette is located
if you are running from a drive other than A:
The command line options /q allows quiet mode un-install.

5.0 OS/2 Driver Installation Procedure
------------------------------------------
1. Make a backup copy of the diskette.
2. Start a OS/2 windows by double clicking on the OS/2 Windows icon in the
Command prompt folder.
3. Type "A:\OS2\INSTALL.CMD" at the command prompt. Change the disk drive
letter A: if the Sentinel Driver Diskette is in a floppy disk drive
other than A:.
Optionally, we provide an integrated setup program, SETUP.EXE, at
the root directory of the driver software that autodetects the
operating system and invoke the correct driver setup program for
you. Please refer to the "Autodetecting Setup Program" section for
more details.
4. A dialog box with title "OS/2 Device Driver Installation" is displayed.
5. Change the source directory and destination directory if necessary.
In case of the CD-ROM distribution, Change the source directory to
{CD-ROM DRIVE}:\PRODUCT\DRIVERS where {CD-ROM DRIVE} is the drive
letter corresponding to CD-ROM drive on your system.
6. Click on "Install".
7. Select the "Rainbow OS/2 Device Driver".
8. Click on "OK" button.
9. After the driver has been installed, click on "Exit" to exit.
10. Click on "Yes" button when the dialog box with message "Exit The
Program" appears.
11. Restart OS/2.
12. If you need to change any of the driver's default settings, modify the
DEVICE statement in the CONFIG.SYS file and create an .ini file
containing the required parameters. See the following section for
details.
Manual Installation of Sentinel System Driver for OS/2
---------------------------------------------------------
We highly recommend that you install the Sentinel System Driver for OS/2
with our installer. If you decide to install it manually later on, you may
do so by performing the following steps:
1. Copy \OS2\SENTINEL.SYS to the OS2 subdirectory.
2. Add the following line to your CONFIG.SYS file:

5.1 OS/2 Driver Configuration

The method of configuring the system driver under OS/2 uses a
configuration file. The file name of the configuration file is passed
to the driver via a command line argument. The configuration file uses
syntax similar to that used by Windows for its INI files. The
configuration file uses the same section names as defined for the
Windows 3.X driver. Data can be defined for all ports up to a maximum
of 4 ports. Configuration information can be written to a log file.

6.0 Windows 9X Driver Installation Procedure
------------------------------------------------
1. Make a backup copy of the diskette.
2. Start Windows 9X. Select "Run" from the Taskbar and run the file
SETUP.EXE (see section 7.0 for details) in the on the driver diskette.
Optionally, you can run SENTW9X.EXE with these options:
1. /q Quiet mode.
Normal dialogs are not displayed but error messages
will be displayed.
2. /e Suppress all messages. (Overwrites the /q switch)
Both normal dialogs and error messages not displayed.
Look for non-zero return code from the installer so
installation error can be detected.
3. /pxxx Path, where xxx is the path of files to be installed.
Specify the path of files to be installed.
Otherwise, files will be copied from the default
directory.
4. /o Overwrite the existing Sentinel Driver. By default, if
the existing driver is newer than the one to be installed,
the installer will not copy over it.
5. /USB Install USB driver support.
3. Select "Install Sentinel Driver" (if you ran SENTW9X.EXE) from the
"Functions" menu.
4. Click "OK" when the "Driver installed! Restart your system."
message appears. Restart Windows 9X.

Manual Installation of Sentinel System Driver for Windows 9X
------------------------------------------------------------
We highly recommend that you install the Sentinel System Driver for Windows
with our installer. If you decide to install it manually later on, you may
do so by performing the following steps:
1. Make a backup copy of the diskette.
2. If your application is a Win32 application, go to step 7.
3. Run Registry Editor (REGEDIT.EXE in Windows 9X root directory).
4. Select HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices.
( Clicking on the expansion box next to the item name expands the
branch )
5. With RunServices highlighted, click on "Edit" menu and select "New",
then select "String Value" from its submenu. Registry Editor
adds an entry "New Value #1" to the end of the list.
Rename it to "RNBOStart". ( To rename a key, click it with right mouse
button, select Rename, and type the new name )
Double-click on it to bring up "Edit String" dialog box.
Type "%system_root%\system\rnbosent\sentstrt.exe" and click OK,
where %system_root% is the name of the Windows 9X root directory.
6. Alternatively, the file sentstrt.exe can be copied to the
%system_root%\startm~1\programs\startup subdirectory.
7. Copy the file "SENTINEL.VXD" from the "WIN_9X\" directory on the
Sentinel Driver diskette to the %system_root%\system directory.
Create the subdirectory %system_root%\system\rnbosent.
Copy all other files from the "WIN_9X\" directory to the
%system_root%\system\rnbosent subdirectory. Also copy "SENTINEL.VXD"
to %system_root%\system\rnbosent as "SENTINEL.SAV", this is your
back-up file to the system driver.
8. The installation is now complete.
To use the driver with Win32 applications, simply start the application.
For all other applications (DOS and/or Win16), restart Windows 9X. Note:
The driver can dynamically be loaded by running SENTSTRT.EXE, as this
will remove the restriction to re-boot the machine after installation.

6.1 Windows 9X Driver Configuration
------------------------------------------------
1. Start Windows 9X. Select "Run" from the Taskbar and run the file
SENTW9X.EXE in the WINDOWS\SYSTEM\RNBOSENT subdirectory.
2. Select "Configure Sentinel Driver" from the "Functions" menu.
3. Click the "Edit" button to edit an existing parallel port setting
or click the "Add" button to add a new parallel port setting.
Select "OK" after you finish the port configuration.
4. Restart Windows 9X for the changes to take effect.

6.2 Windows 9X Driver Un-install
------------------------------------------------
1. Start Windows 9X. Select "Run" from the Taskbar and run the file
SENTW9X.EXE in the WINDOWS\SYSTEM\RNBOSENT subdirectory (or from the
original distribution media). Alternatively, you can run SETUP.EXE /U
to remove the driver as well. The driver can be removed via the
command-line options or the pull-down menu.
a. Command-line options:
SENTW9X /q /u - Quietly removes the existing driver, or
SETUP.EXE /q /u - Also quietly removes the driver
b. Pull-down menu:
Select "Remove Sentinel Driver" from the "Function" menu.
2. When complete, a dialog box with the message "Sentinel Driver Removed"
is displayed.
3. Click "OK" to continue.

7.0 Autodetecting Setup Program
------------------------------------------------
SETUP.EXE is a 16 bit Windows program designed to detect the
active OS, and launch the appropriate Sentinel System Installation
program. SETUP will be able to launch the OS/2, Win3x, Win9X,
Win NT(Intel), Win NT(PowerPC), and Win NT(Alpha) installers.
In order for this launching program to work correctly the directory
structure must be maintained. That is, setup.exe must be in the parent
directory for all the other installer you wish to support.
To execute the program, Select "Run" from the Taskbar and run the file
SETUP.EXE in the root directory of the Sentinel System Driver diskette.
The command line option differs slightly from running the specific OS
installer directly. Please review the following options and the Special
Note that follows:
/P<Source Path> -- Specify the root location of the portable driver.
If not specified, the location of the SETUP program
is the root.
SPECIAL NOTE: If you do not point to the parent
directory of the system driver, setup.exe will not
spawn the appropriate installer correctly.
/Qn -- Quiet Mode, 4 different levels:
/Q1 - No error messages, launch installer quietly.
/Q2(default) - Report error messages, launch installer quietly.
/Q3 - No error messages, launch installer without
the quiet mode.
/Q4 - Report error messages, launch installer without
the quiet mode.
SPECIAL NOTE: Unlike the installers, Setup.exe
runs quietly by default. To show options, use /Q3
or /Q4.
/O -- Overwrites existing driver regardless of version.
/U -- Uninstall the detected driver
/Xn -- Do not autodetect, instead use:
/X1 - Windows 3.X
/X2 - Windows 9X
/X3 - OS/2
/X4 - Windows NT - i86
/X5 - Windows NT - Alpha
/X6 - Windows NT - PowerPC
/USB -- Install USB driver support.
/? -- Display online usage.
FINAL SPECIAL NOTE: Due to its requirements for autodetection,
SETUP.EXE does not support the /E command. If you need to use the
/E command, you cannot use SETUP.EXE.
Download Driver Pack
After your driver has been downloaded, follow these simple steps to install it.
Expand the archive file (if the download file is in zip or rar format).
If the expanded file has an .exe extension, double click it and follow the installation instructions.
Otherwise, open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start menu and selecting Device Manager.
Find the device and model you want to update in the device list.
Double-click on it to open the Properties dialog box.
From the Properties dialog box, select the Driver tab.
Click the Update Driver button, then follow the instructions.
Very important: You must reboot your system to ensure that any driver updates have taken effect.
