-----------------------------------------------------------------------

This file describes how to use EtherCD 5.2 to do the following
tasks on a PC running Windows 2000:

Install an EtherLink PCI NIC without first running the
NIC preinstallation program on the EtherCD.

Install an EtherLink PCI NIC using installation diskettes
(which can be created from the EtherCD or downloaded from
the 3Com World Wide Web site).

Remove the network driver and NIC software.

Installing an EtherLink NIC Without Running the Preinstallation
Program
------------------------------------------------------------------
You can install an EtherLink PCI NIC in a Windows 2000 PC without
first running the NIC preinstallation program on the EtherCD;
however, you will need to manually update the driver after the
installation is complete.

Windows 2000 ships with an older version of the EtherLink driver.
This version should be updated using the EtherCD.

To install the NIC without first running the EtherCD
preinstallation program:

1. Turn off the power to the PC.

2. Install the NIC in the PC and connect it to the network.
See the user guide for instructions.

3. Turn on the power to the PC.
Windows 2000 detects the NIC. The Found New Hardware Wizard
starts and installs the driver that ships with Windows 2000.

4. When the installation is complete, insert the EtherCD in the
    CD-ROM drive.
    The EtherCD Welcome screen appears.

5. Click NIC Software.

6. Click NIC Drivers and Diagnostics.

7. Click Update NIC Driver.

8. Click Update Drivers and Diagnostic Program to update the
driver and install the 3Com NIC Diagnostics program; click
Update Drivers and Remove Diagnostic Program to update the
    driver only.

Files are copied. Do not continue until the update
complete message appears. (This may take a few moments.)

9. Click OK, and then exit the EtherCD.

10. Restart the PC.

Installing an EtherLink NIC Using the Installation Diskettes
------------------------------------------------------------
Installation diskettes can be created from the EtherCD
(see the next section, "Creating Installation Diskettes
from the EtherCD") or downloaded from the 3Com World Wide
Web site at http://support.3com.com/infodeli/tools/nic/.

To install an EtherLink NIC in a PC running Windows 2000
using installation diskettes:

2. Install the NIC in the PC and connect it to the network.
See the user guide for instructions.

3. Turn on the power to the PC.

Wizard starts and installs the driver that ships with
    Windows 2000.

    diskette #1 into the PC.

5. Right-click on the My Computer icon, and then click
    Properties.

15. Click Next.
Files are copied and the driver is updated.

16. Click Finish.

17. Restart the PC.

Creating Installation Diskettes from the EtherCD
------------------------------------------------
NOTE: The installation diskettes allow you to install the
network driver only. If you want to install the NIC
diagnostics program or desktop management software, you must
install them from the EtherCD.

Before you start, make sure that you have two blank, formatted
diskettes. Label the diskettes EtherDisk 1 and EtherDisk 2.

EtherDisk 1 contains:
-NDIS 3/4/5 drivers
-NetWare client and server drivers
-Windows for Workgroup drivers
-NIC preinstallation program
-README.TXT file

EtherDisk 2 contains:
-NDIS 2 driver
-PACKET driver
-Help text files
-DOS utilities

To create installation diskettes from the EtherCD:

1. Turn on the power to the PC and start Windows.

2. Insert the EtherCD in the CD-ROM drive.
    The EtherCD Welcome screen appears.
If the EtherCD Welcome screen does not appear,
enter the following command from the Run option
    of the Windows Start menu:

    d:\installs\setup.exe

where d:\ represents the letter name of the
    CD-ROM drive.

3. Click NIC Software.

4. Click NIC Drivers and Diagnostics.

5. Click Installation Utilities.

6. Click Create Installation Diskettes.
The EtherCD Diskette Creation Utility Welcome
    screen appears.

7. Click Next.

8. Insert the blank, formatted diskette labeled
EtherDisk 1 in the PC, and then click Next.
    Files are copied.

9. Remove the disk and insert the disk labeled
EtherDisk 2 when prompted, and then click OK.
Files are copied. The diskette creation is complete.

Removing the Network Driver and NIC Software

Installation to remove both the drivers and the
       NIC Diagnostics program.

A screen appears explaining what is about to occur.

   4. Click Proceed.

   5. If you chose 'Clean up failed installation", you will see
the bindings process for a few seconds, followed by an
Update utility message. Click OK. Another update message
       appears. Click OK.

   6. Exit the EtherCD.

   7. Reboot the computer to make the changes take effect.
